BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of breastfeeding, early weaning is a reality, so less than 50% of children worldwide and in Brazil are on exclusive breastfeeding in the sixth month of life. A strategy to counteract this scenario is breastfeeding counseling. This study aims to verify the effectiveness of individualized counseling by nurses trained in breastfeeding counseling, on the duration of exclusive breastfeeding, compared to standard care.

METHODS: Multicenter, randomized, parallel, and open clinical trial, with primiparous women aged over 18 years, hospitalized in rooming-in wards at participating centers and hemodynamically stable, aware, and oriented, who had a single-fetus pregnancy and …

A Lifestyle Modification Intervention In Hispanic Adolescents With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Brianne Miller

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

U.S. population studies have confirmed that the Hispanic population has the highest prevalence and the worst prognosis for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (Katz et al., 2021). The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to implement a multicomponent, lifestyle modification intervention in Hispanic pediatric primary care patients to combat the disease process and sequela of NAFLD. The PICOT question for this project was: In Hispanic adolescents aged 10-21 with obesity and NAFLD (P), what is the effect of a multicomponent, lifestyle modification intervention (I), on alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (O), over a 12-week time period (T)? A comprehensive literature search …

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by an "infodemic"-an overwhelming excess of accurate, inaccurate, and uncertain information. The social media-based science communication campaign Dear Pandemic was established to address the COVID-19 infodemic, in part by soliciting submissions from readers to an online question box. Our study characterized the information needs of Dear Pandemic's readers by identifying themes and longitudinal trends among question box submissions.

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of questions submitted from August 24, 2020, to August 24, 2021. We used Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling to identify 25 topics among the submissions, then used thematic analysis to …

Hidden And Unacknowledged: The Mental Health And Psychosocial Interventions Delivered By School Nurses In Western Australia, Anita Moyes, Shirley Mcgough, Dianne Wynaden

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Schools are an important setting for the early identification, assessment and intervention of mental health problems in children and young people. Internationally, many nurses work in schools, but the role of this group with young people experiencing mental health problems has had only limited investigation. This study explored the activities school nurses undertook with young people experiencing mental health problems in Australia. Reporting was guided by the COREQ checklist. Thirty-one nurses participated in a semi-structured interview. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method of analysis as developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967). The findings identified that nurses working in …

This article describes a pilot test of a community engaged, culturally relevant, arts-based intervention. The purpose was to increase children’s personal protective buffering resources. Protective buffering resources help children cope with stressful stimuli, reduce activation of their systemic stress response, mitigate allostatic load, and promote optimal health. The “Learning a Healthy Rhythm” intervention included a stress management component and an ongoing Afro-Latino percussion program for 18 children ages 9–11. The stress management component included educational content about stress, self-assessment of stress symptoms, and stress management techniques. A mixed-method intervention evaluation design was used. Qualitative data, quantitative data, and biometrics including …

School Nurses’ Participation In Accommodations For Children With Epilepsy: A Quality Improvement Project., Paula A. Johnson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Abstract

Epilepsy is the most frequent, chronic, neurological condition in childhood, impacting 0.5 to 1% of the population. Documented learning problems associated with childhood epilepsy include memory problems, attention deficits, reading difficulties, and processing speed abnormalities. Epilepsy also impacts psychological health with poor self-esteem, a high incidence of bullying, and poor school performance. The Every Student Succeeds Act identifies the school nurse as a leader in chronic disease management; advocating for students to receive the resources and support they need to achieve academic success. The large Midwestern school system, studied in this capstone project, has 804 known students with epilepsy. …

How Physical Activity Implementation Strategies Changed During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Schools Enrolled In The Let’S Go! Program, Alexandra Peary

Honors College

Childhood obesity is a serious public health issue in the United States. Many children fail to meet the recommended daily physical activity of 60 minutes. Poor metabolic health at a young age puts children and adolescents at a significantly higher risk of developing chronic health issues in adulthood. With the potential to further exacerbate the obesity epidemic, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic challenged students’ abilities to participate in structured physical activity, such as recess and physical education, due to school closures, strict social distancing guidelines, and hybrid or remote models of learning. This lack of structure and opportunities for …

Bilateral Hydronephrosis: A Case Report, Edlin Glane Mathias Ms, Vijay Kumar Dr, Sundeep P. T Dr

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Hydronephrosis involves the dilatation of the renal pelvis, calyces and ureter. It develops secondary to urinary tract obstruction and leads to a build-up of backpressure in the urinary tract. It can affect unilateral or bilateral kidneys and is caused either by blocking urine flow to the bladder or the urine is leaking backward through the reflux. We report a case of a 9-year-old child inpatient in a paediatric surgical unit. A cystoscopy revealed that the bladder is distended and the bladder wall is thickened. The child was on oral medication and the child had a good prognosis and was discharged …

Evaluation Of An Interdisciplinary Ketogenic Diet Clinic For The Treatment Of Pediatric Refractory Epilepsy, Britt Schloemer May 2020

Evaluation Of An Interdisciplinary Ketogenic Diet Clinic For The Treatment Of Pediatric Refractory Epilepsy, Britt Schloemer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Pediatric refractory epilepsy affects approximately 30% of all children diagnosed with epilepsy. Childhood refractory epilepsy patients pose a challenge for traditional approaches to epilepsy management due to their complex and unique needs. Refractory epilepsy negatively impacts a patient’s ability to attend school or hold a job, and patients have a generally poor health status related to seizures as well as pharmaceutical side effects (Conway et al., 2016). The ketogenic diet (KD) is an alternative option for the treatment of pediatric refractory epilepsy due to established efficacy, manageable side effects, and reduced health care-associated costs due to reduced emergency department (ED) …

The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve patient experiences by decreasing the pain that is associated with vaccinations through the use of a nonpharmacological method for comfort via the Buzzy® device. After thorough analysis and synthesis of the literature, the Buzzy® device that …
