BACKGROUND: Cannabis is increasingly used both medically and recreationally. With widespread use, there is growing concern about how to identify cannabis-impaired drivers.

METHODS: A placebo-controlled randomized double-blinded protocol was conducted to study the effects of cannabis on driving performance. One hundred ninety-one participants were randomized to smoke ad libitum a cannabis cigarette containing placebo or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (5.9% or 13.4%). Blood, oral fluid (OF), and breath samples were collected along with longitudinal driving performance on a simulator (standard deviation of lateral position [SDLP] and car following [coherence]) over a 5-hour period. Drivers with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) experience visual-cognitive impairment that may impact their fitness to drive. Fitness to drive is the ability to control a motor vehicle, as determined via a comprehensive driving evaluation, with in-clinic and on-road driving assessments. However, the on-road driving assessment may pose a crash risk to medically at-risk drivers. Instead, a driving simulator assessment that targets the driving performance deficits of drivers may inform fitness to drive decisions. However, utilizing clinical tests to indicate driving simulator performance in drivers with MS is not fully understood.

Occupational and Physical Therapists are in a unique role, in which they can assist in the identification and rehabilitation of impairments. The collaboration between UCSD and USAHS is preparing students with the knowledge and skills to assess older persons for driving abilities.

The current content delivery allows the TREDS program to be available to the Gerontology course offering for other USAHS campus locations; and has the potential to be accessed by other institutions of higher education offering courses in Gerontology.

Adolescents are at high risk for motor vehicle crashes (MVCs). Teens with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have an even greater risk for MVCs due to impaired visual, cognitive, and motor skills critical for driving. This prospective two group study demonstrated the demographic, clinical, and simulated driving skill differences of seven adolescents with ASD (mean age = 15.14, SD ±1.22) compared to 22 healthy controls (HC) (mean age = 14.32, SD ±.72) through a comprehensive driving evaluation (CDE) conducted by an occupational therapist certified driving rehabilitation specialist (OT-CDRS). Background—People arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) are at high risk to reoffend. One reason for this high rate of recidivism among DUI offenders is that these individuals systematically underestimate the degree to which alcohol impairs their ability to drive. This study compared perceived and objective driving ability following alcohol and performance feedback in drivers with and without a history of DUI.

Background: The Fitness-to-Drive Screening Measure^© (FTDS) is an online screening tool that enables proxy raters (caregivers, family members, and friends) to identify at-risk older adult drivers via 54 driving-related items. In developing the web-based Fitness-to-Drive Screening Measure (FTDS) and keyform (results output) for use to identify at-risk older drivers, we examined the needs, perspectives, and suggestions of three stakeholders groups: occupational therapy practitioners, certified driver rehabilitation specialists (CDRSs), and family members/caregivers. We conducted three focus groups, which were moderated, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using directed content analysis. Respondents in two focus groups also rated FTDS aspects (e.g., ease of use, format, and relevance), using a visual analog scale (VAS, 0-10 scale with 10 being excellent). This article documents the extent of children's involvement in tractor operations among a representative sample of Kentucky children living and working on family farms. Specifically, we describe children's exposures to tractor-related work activities, profile their use of the tractor (number of days worked), and assess compliance with generally recommended safety measures, such as using tractors equipped with ROPS (rollover protective structures), avoiding riding as passengers on tractors, and operating tractors on public roadways.
