Effects Of Chronic And Acute Oestrogen Replacement Therapy In Aged Animals After Experimental Stroke, Louise D. Mccullough, Fudong Liu, S. E. Benashski, M. Siegel
UCHC Articles - Research
The effect of oestrogen replacement therapy (ERT) on stroke incidence and severity has been extensively debated. Clinical trials of ERT have demonstrated an increased risk of stroke in treated women, although the study participants were well past menopause when therapy was initiated. It has been suggested that detrimental effects of ERT may be unmasked after prolonged periods of hypoestrogenicity. To date, very few studies have examined the effect of ERT in aged animals, although the timing of replacement may be critical to the neuroprotective effects of ERT. We hypothesised that chronic ERT initiated in late middle age would decrease infarct …

The ageing population makes it imperative to provide appropriate training for general practice registrars (GPRs) in the community-based care of older patients. However, data suggest that older patients may be less willing to consult GPRs for chronic/complex care; adversely affecting training opportunities and potentially the satisfaction of older patients in training practices. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to investigate this concern in the Australian context and develop models of older patient-GPR interaction that are acceptable to patients.
Information Placed In Trust: Older Gay Men And Social Workers On Talking About Sexual Identity In Aged Care, Mark Hughes
Information Placed In Trust: Older Gay Men And Social Workers On Talking About Sexual Identity In Aged Care, Mark Hughes
Professor Mark Hughes
As more men who openly identify as gay approach older age, it is important for health and aged care professionals to consider the appropriateness of talking with these men about their sexual identity. This paper reports findings from a pilot study that examined how sexual identity should be acknowledged in aged care practice. The paper draws on qualitative data from two focus groups; one with older gay men and one with social workers. An analysis of the themes that overlapped the two groups highlighted the extent to which participants thought sexual identity should be discussed openly, the value placed on …

Older age, dietary folate and chronic alcohol consumption are important risk factors for the development of colon cancer. The present study examined the effects of ageing, folate and alcohol on genomic and p16-specific DNA methylation, and p16 expression in the murine colon. Old (aged 18 months; n 70) and young (aged 4 months; n 70) male C57BL/6 mice were pair-fed either a Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet with alcohol (18 % of energy), a Lieber-DeCarli diet with alcohol (18 %) and reduced folate (0·25 mg folate/l) or an isoenergetic control diet (0·5 mg folate/l) for 5 or 10 weeks. Genomic DNA methylation, …

The Buccal Cytome And Micronucleus Frequency Is Substantially Altered In Down’S Syndrome And Normal Ageing Compared To Young Healthy Controls, Philip Thomas, Sarah Harvey, Tini Gruner, Michael Fenech
Dr Tini M Gruner
The buccal micronucleus cytome assay was used to investigate biomarkers for DNA damage, cell death and basal cell frequency in buccal cells of healthy young, healthy old and young Down's syndrome cohorts. With normal ageing a significant increase in cells with micronuclei (P < 0.05, average increase +366%), karyorrhectic cells (P < 0.001, average increase +439%), condensed chromatin cells (P < 0.01, average increase +45.8%) and basal cells (P < 0.001, average increase +233%) is reported relative to young controls. In Down's syndrome we report a significant increase in cells with micronuclei (P < 0.001, average increase +733%) and binucleated cells (P < 0.001, average increase …

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
The effects of various fat subtypes can have a profound influence on our health and performance, not only in the early years of life but also as we age. The long-chain omega-3s docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acid appear to have a positive role in our mental and physical health.
Clinical Educators' Reactions To Ageing, Anne Mandy, Kevin Lucas, Lisa Hodgson
Clinical Educators' Reactions To Ageing, Anne Mandy, Kevin Lucas, Lisa Hodgson
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Ageism and negative attitudes towards ageing have been identified within the literature as a cause for concern. Reactions to ageing are known to be strongly positively correlated with attitudes towards older people in general. Moreover, the link between ageist practice and quality of care is also established, but implications for education and training have not been explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the reactions to ageing of clinical and fieldwork educators of undergraduate students. Clinical and field work educators are largely responsible for all the clinical education received by these students and thus have the potential to …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Assessment of renal function in clinical medicine is of great importance. Various studies report that cystatin C (cysC) and \beta 2 -microglobulin are valuable markers of renal function. In this study, serum cysC and \beta 2 -microglobulin were measured in parallel with serum creatinine in a healthy population, and the characteristics of the relationship of cysC and \beta 2 -microglobulin to age and gender were compared. Serum creatinine, cysC and b2-microglobulin were measured in 119 (86 female; 33 male, 6 to 69 years old) healthy subjects. They were divided into five different age groups: group 1 (6-15 years, n = …

In this study, the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO_2) ,a common pollutant in urban air, on t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress in rat lung tissues were examined. Ten young rats and 10 adult rats were exposed to SO_2 while another 10 young rats and 10 adult rats made up the control groups. Ten ppm SO_2 was administered to the animals of the SO_2 groups in an exposure chamber for one hour a day every day for 6 weeks. The control groups were exposed to filtered air in the same chamber for the same period. At the end of the experimental period, …
Nutrition And Ageing In Africa, Karen E. Charlton
Nutrition And Ageing In Africa, Karen E. Charlton
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Although the proportion of elderly people in African populations is much smaller than that in developed countries, the absolute numbers of older Africans are rapidly increasing. The huge majority of Africans live in poor economic circumstances and few countries are able to offer social assistance programs. The health and wellbeing of older persons largely depend on the integral existence of informal services, social support networks and kin support. African gerontologists have urged social welfare policy makers to take cognizance of self-organized intergenerational help systems already present on the continent, and to make public-sector finance available to support these systems. Nutrition …
