Exploring Student Ageism Perceptions Using Life Review: An Educational Intervention

Abstract

Background: Addressing student ageism is essential for promoting desires to work with older adults, but little is known about how life review intervention, used as an educational tool in OT programs, can affect ageism. This study aimed to explore the effect of life review on OT students’ ageism perceptions and desires to work with older adults.

Design: A qualitative focus group research approach was performed.

Method: Thirty entry-level occupational therapy students from a Texas university were used as a convenient sample. After participating in a 4-hour workshop, students conducted …

Vasculitides are a group of diseases that produces vasculitis, which is characterized by inflammatory infiltrates within blood vessel walls and results in intimal injury as well as progressive mural destruction. Infiltrates are characterized per the Chapel Hill classification, into large, medium, and small-vessel vasculitides. ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a disease that has been described as involving small-sized vessels. However, some cases of large vessel disease involvement have been documented. ANCA-associated aortitis is a rare entity poorly described in the literature. Due to the rarity of this pathology, there is no Level I evidence available regarding diagnosis and treatment. We present …

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of dizziness in older community-dwelling adults in India.

Methods: The cross-sectional sample was composed of 21,343 individuals (≥65 years) from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) Wave 1 in 2017–2018. Dizziness was assessed by determining if the individuals suffered from “persistent or troublesome dizziness or light headedness” in the past 2 years.

Results: Women and men had the overall prevalence of 14.6%/17.2% and 11.6% in past 2-year dizziness, respectively. Adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed that sociodemographic factors (female sex), physical chronic conditions (angina), geriatric conditions …

Prior Use Of Antibiotics And Clinical Characteristics Of Women Who Developed Urinary Tract Infection Due To Beta-Lactamase Bacteria In A Peruvian Hospital, Ítalo Valero Román, Félix Llanos-Tejada

Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana

Introduction: The overused of antibiotics has existed as a threat to public health for several years. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that in the year 2050 the "post-antibiotic era" will begin, where approximately 10 million deaths per year will be attributed to resistant infections. The infection where this type of bacteria is most relevant is in urinary tract pathology. Objective: Determine the factors associated with the development of urinary tract infections by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in older adults in the internal medicine service of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital. Methods: An analytical, cross-sectional, retrospective, case-control type study was carried …

Background

Repeated episodes of trauma, particularly in older adults, result in increased morbidity and mortality. This study investigates trauma recidivism in our adult population to identify which patients in our region are more likely to become recidivists.

Materials and Methods

This 4 year retrospective study (2013 to 2017) examines all patients 18 years of age or older with multiple hospital admissions for trauma, comparing patients ages 65 and older (older adults) to those ages 18 to 64 (younger adults). Exclusion criteria consisted of those younger than 18 and/or had a home zip code outside of the study region. Data included …

Background/aim: Biomarkers are useful for diagnosing infection and sepsis in adults, but data are limited in elderly patients. Furthermore, clinical symptoms of infection in elderly patients are usually atypical or unclear. We aimed to assess the usefulness of PCT, CRP, and WBC in distinguishing elderly patients infected with sepsis from infected without sepsis and those with no-infection. We also aimed to find a cut-off value for diagnosing sepsis and infection without sepsis in elderly critically ill patients. Materials and methods: In this single-center and prospective observational study, patients older than 65 years were enrolled. Serum levels of PCT, CRP, and …

Why I Brought My Mother Home, Barbara L. Gracious

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in the United States more than 16 million adult family members provide care for a relative with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. The economic value contributed by unpaid caregivers is $234 billion dollars. Such caregivers are vital to the ability of the U.S. to meet caretaking needs, as the projected number of individuals suffering from dementia will nearly triple over the next 30 years. A meta-analysis found that decisions to provide family caretaking are rooted in long-standing family relationships. This essay explores one family’s decision to move from long-term institutional care back to family-based care …

The Effects Of Long-Term Benzodiazepine Use And Withdrawal In The Elderly, Lydia Suchecki, Hannah Granger, Jamie Kellner, Mary Ellen Hethcox

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Benzodiazepines remain a commonly prescribed medication in the United States, and the high usage of this drug class is especially a concern in the elderly population for several reasons. First, elderly patients metabolize drugs differently, leading to varying responses. Age-related changes also have a significant impact on the effects of benzodiazepines. Second, elderly patients are more likely to be taking multiple centrally-acting drugs, which can further exacerbate negative effects. In regard to long-term benzodiazepine use, elderly patients experience an increased risk of cognitive impairment, motor vehicle accidents, decline in physical performance, falls and subsequent fractures, and sleep disturbances. Withdrawal is …

New Award: Carah And Germantown's Center In The Park Awarded $2.2 Million To Study Mental Health Of Older African-American Adults

CenterPieces

Why do older African-Americans tend to report less depression than Whites although they have poorer health and higher rates of chronic illness?

Research from the past 15 years consistently shows health disparities between Whites and minorities in the United States. African-Americans, in particular, are at higher risk than Caucasians for serious health conditions such as stroke, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and mild cognitive impairment. These chronic conditions typically contribute to depression in elders as a whole. However, the rates of depression for African-Americans are unclear with many studies reporting lower depression than in Whites and others reporting the reverse.
