Retention Of Foster Parents For At-Risk Youth In Tennessee, Marvin Amos

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Federal legislation with the Family First Prevention Service Act (FFPSA) of 2017 required Tennessee to increase foster parent retention strategies. Tennessee does not have enough available foster homes for adolescents. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore foster parent retention in Tennessee and to inform policymakers on how to adapt policy to increase the retention. The theoretical foundation for this study was based on the policy feedback theory, to identify the policy scope in Tennessee, and the two-factor theory, to guide the data analysis in the context of employee satisfaction and retention measures. Purposive sampling techniques were …

Adolescent Health Services: Access And Outcomes, Mackenzie Stuenkel

All Dissertations

Adolescence is a unique developmental period during which most lifelong mental health illnesses develop. Interventions and programs targeting adolescent health care utilization and effectiveness often fail to include measures of implementation science including long term sustainability and contextual characteristics. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate two programs designed to increase health care utilization and engagement in adolescent populations. Guided by the Practical, Robust, Implementation and Sustainability Framework (PRISM), strengths and weaknesses across model delivery and context of School-based Health Centers (SBHC) were assessed through in-depth interviews with clinicians, managers, and school staff. SBHC outcomes and services were assessed …

Increasing Providers' Intent To Perform E-Cigarette Screening In The Adolescent Population, Andrea Hight May 2019

Increasing Providers' Intent To Perform E-Cigarette Screening In The Adolescent Population, Andrea Hight

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Youth e-cigarette use has increased significantly in recent years. E-cigarette use has many negative health effects supported by the literature including increased risk of respiratory infections, nicotine addiction, and the potential for cancer. E-cigarette screening creates an opportunity for patient education and counseling, as well as potentially decreases e-cigarette use. However, healthcare providers do not regularly screen adolescents for e-cigarette use. According to previous studies, the main barrier to e-cigarette screening is healthcare providers’ knowledge regarding e-cigarette health effects. This project sought to increase healthcare providers’ intent to screen for e-cigarette use in the adolescent population, through the provision of …

Improving nutritional status during adolescence is an opportunity to improve the lives of this generation and the next. Estimating the burden of malnutrition at a population level is fundamental to targeting interventions and measuring progress over time, and for adolescents, we usually depend on survey data and the 2007 WHO Growth Reference to do so. There is substantial risk of misguided conclusions regarding adolescent prevalence estimates, however, when underlying methodological limitations of the indicators and reference are not adequately considered. We use national prevalence estimates among girls and young women 10-22 y of age from the 2014 State of Food …

Mothers' Parenting Discipline Style And Their Early Puberty Daughters' Engagement In High-Risk Behaviors, Yvette C. White Jan 2019

Mothers' Parenting Discipline Style And Their Early Puberty Daughters' Engagement In High-Risk Behaviors, Yvette C. White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Some early puberty girls engage in high-risk externalizing behaviors such as early sexual activity, delinquent behavior, and disruptive behaviors. Harsh parenting experienced by girls who develop early has been associated with delinquent and disruptive behaviors. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine predictive relationships between the style of parental discipline by mothers of early puberty girls and the likelihood and frequency of the girls' engagement in high-risk behaviors. Parenting style theory, including the authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive style of parenting, served as the theoretical foundation for the study. Survey data were collected from 28 mothers who identified …

Anger Without Agency: Exploring The Experiences Of Stress In Adolescent Girls, Elin A. Björling, Narayan B. Singh Oct 2017

Anger Without Agency: Exploring The Experiences Of Stress In Adolescent Girls, Elin A. Björling, Narayan B. Singh

The Qualitative Report

Although a great deal of research has measured stressful life events and stress-related symptoms in adolescents, little research has qualitatively examined the experience of stress in teens. The purpose of this study was to utilize thematic analysis to explore how teen girls described their experiences of stress. Thirty-one girls, ages 14–18, were recruited for a study examining stress and stress-related symptoms. As part of this study, they participated in an open-ended, qualitative interview about their personal experiences of stress. Themes included the mind of stress, emotionally shutting out others, and “growing out of it.” The overarching finding was that all …

Impact Of Environmental And Individual Risk Factors On Pregnant And Parenting Teenagers, Lakeasha Thrasher

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teenage pregnancy is both a social and a public health problem in the United States, with approximately 750,000 young women between the ages of 15 and 19 becoming pregnant each year. In addition, teen pregnancy is more prevalent in the African American (15%) and Hispanic (14%) communities than it is in White communities (5%). The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors contributing to teen pregnancy among racially diverse teenagers 15 to 19 years of age living in the rural south. This study, guided by social cognitive theory, used a quantitative, cross-sectional research design to determine whether living …

Evaluability Assessment Of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention And Sexual Health Program, Be Proud! Be Responsible! In New York State, Veronica Eileen Fitzpatrick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Proper implementation of pregnancy prevention programs is essential to sexual health program success and intended health outcomes for participants (Demby et. al, 2014). Large scale implementation of state-wide and local programs can vary. Multiple studies have shown that proper implementation of such programs is an essential requirement to their success (LaChausse, Clark, & Chapple, 2014; Demby et. al, 2014; Fixsen et. al, 2009). Generally, there are three types of organizations that receive funds for pregnancy prevention program implementation: schools, large city community organizations, and smaller community-based organizations (Demby et. al, 2014; Fixsen et. al, 2009). Be Proud! Be Responsible! is …

Southeastern United States' Parental Perspectives To Promote Adolescent Sleep Health, Steven Mark Tompa

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many U.S. adolescents suffer from sleep disorders. Although poor sleep habits may contribute to health issues, less is known about how parental perspectives influence sleep health in adolescents. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to address a knowledge gap in understanding parental views to promote better sleep habits in adolescents. The blended theoretical framework included the theories of caring science, social learning, advocacy paradigm, and repair and restoration of sleep. Twenty parents in the Southeastern United States participated in open-ended interviews. Research questions were designed to elicit parental perspectives about recognizing unhealthy sleep habits, improving daily sleep health …

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Excessive alcohol consumption increases the years of life lost to premature death and disability worldwide. Religion is a mitigating factor in alcohol consumption. A survey in the Dominican Republic showed increasing church attendance by middle and high school students (N = 3,478) was associated with a delay in age at first alcoholic drink, fewer students who had consumed alcohol in the past month (current drinkers), lower alcohol consumption levels, fewer episodes of inebriation, and less heavy episodic alcohol consumption (all P < 0.0001). The results suggested that it may be useful to conceive of church-attending youth as a subset of the adolescent social network when planning primary alcohol prevention programs for young people.

Preventing Skin Cancer In Adolescent Girls Through Intervention With Their Mothers, Mary K. Baker May 2013

Preventing Skin Cancer In Adolescent Girls Through Intervention With Their Mothers, Mary K. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Indoor tanning (IT) before the age of 35 increases one’s risk for melanoma by 75%, and epidemiological data show a 6.1% annual increase in the incidence of melanomas in white women younger than age 44 in the US. Population-based studies reveal that 15% of adolescents and 8% to 14% of their primary caregivers have engaged in IT in the past year.

The compelling case for IT being a significant risk factor for melanoma, together with the high rates of IT in teen girls and their mothers, provided a strong rationale for conducting an antitanning intervention directed at mother-daughter dyads. This …
