Background and Aims

With the advent of computer vision algorithms, we hypothesize that histopathology images from endoscopic biopsies may be utilized for automated classification of histologic phenotypes, thus guiding Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis diagnosis and treatment. The aim of our study is to assess whether artificial intelligence can be used to improve pediatric inflammatory bowel disease outcomes by aiding pathologists with accurate detection of abnormal tissue sections.

Methods

Three two-dimensional (2D) convolutional neural networks with multiple instance learning were developed to classify histopathology tissue sections as normal vs abnormal and as containing active inflammation and/or chronic changes/architectural distortion.

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is an established procedure for stroke prevention in patients with carotid artery stenosis. While CEA is considered safe in younger patients, perioperative risks in octogenarians remain debated, with current guidelines classifying the procedure as "high-risk" in this patient population. This study aimed to evaluate short-term outcomes of CEA across age groups and to assess whether comorbidity burden better predicts outcomes than chronological age.

METHODS: The ACS-NSQIP database (2013-2020), was used to identify patients eligible for inclusion. The cohort was stratified based on age <  60, 60-80, and > 80 years. Propensity score matching and multivariable logistic regression were used to compare …

Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based alkylating chemotherapeutic agent used for cancer treatment. At high cumulative dosage, the negative effect of oxaliplatin on the heart becomes evident and is linked to a growing number of clinical reports. The aim of this study was to determine how chronic oxaliplatin treatment causes the changes in energy-related metabolic activity in the heart that leads to cardiotoxicity and heart damage in mice. C57BL/6 male mice were treated with a human equivalent dosage of intraperitoneal oxaliplatin (0 and 10 mg/kg) once a week for eight weeks. During the treatment, mice were followed with ECG, histology and RNA …

Association Of Germline Variants With Kras-Mutation Status In Colorectal Cancer, Nijole Pollock Tjader, Yin Cao, Et Al. Feb 2026

Association Of Germline Variants With Kras-Mutation Status In Colorectal Cancer, Nijole Pollock Tjader, Yin Cao, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Somatic mutations in KRAS are a common driver of colorectal cancer (CRC) and present at different frequencies by race, sex, tumor site, ethnicity, and genetic similarity. Inherited germline variants may influence tumor somatic mutation frequency by altering mutation or DNA repair processes or altering cellular, immunological and/or microenvironmental responses after a mutation. We hypothesized that the germline genetic background modifies somatic KRAS mutation frequency in CRC. To test this, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 7071 individuals with CRC, using KRAS mutation status as the phenotype. Single-nucleotide variants were chosen for validation analyses based on P values from …
