Postpartum Depression: A National Crisis Calling For Federal Support, Sarah A. Stallsworth May 2026

Postpartum Depression: A National Crisis Calling For Federal Support, Sarah A. Stallsworth

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States, yet it remains significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated. Despite decades of research illuminating its prevalence and detrimental consequences, federal intervention has been limited.  States retain responsibility to address the issue and possess inconsistent and limited legislation.  The purpose of this paper is to propose adding PPD screening as a National Performance Measure (NPM) within the Title V Maternal and Child (MCH) block grant. MCH is a longstanding and resourceful program that provides states funds to address maternal mental health needs. This proposal suggests leveraging a PPD NPM …

Background: Cisplatin remains the standard systemic therapy for the definitive treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), however, resistance to cisplatin continues to be a major barrier to effective treatment, particularly in tumors with NRF2 hyperactivation. Recent studies identify secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1/osteopontin) as a key NRF2 target frequently overexpressed in cancers, where it drives aggressive tumor behavior, metastasis, chemoresistance, and, in some cases, immune suppression. Our recent data highlight SPP1 as one of the top 10 NRF2-upregulated genes in cisplatin-resistant HNSCC. However, its specific role in therapy resistance and metastasis in HNSCC remains unclear. Here, we investigate …

Conventional prediction models incorporating genetic and clinical factors including breast density underperform in non-European populations. We investigated an artificial intelligence-derived mammogram risk score (MRS), a summary of texture features that captures intrinsic breast-tissue characteristics-the substrate for cancer development. This study leveraged data from two North American screening cohorts totaling >226,000 women, including non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, East Asian, South Asian, and Indigenous women. MRS distributions showed nonsignificant shifts (and similar SDs) between cohorts and across race and ethnic subgroups. MRS increased with age and was significantly associated with breast cancer risk, with hazard ratios per SD ranging from 2.24 [95% …

Characterizing Stiffness Dynamics Of Normal And Malignant Breast Spheroids Using Brillouin Microscopy, Razanne Rafat Zaghloul, Karlin Hilai, Chenjun Shi, Jitao Zhang

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: Breast cancer progression and metastasis are closely linked to alterations in the mechanical properties of tumor cells and their microenvironment. Softer, more deformable cells are often associated with higher metastatic potential. While atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the current gold standard for mechanical characterization, it is limited to surface measurements and can damage 3D cultures. It remains unclear how the mechanical properties evolve over time in normal versus malignant spheroids. This study utilizes Brillouin light-scattering microscopy, a non-contact and label-free optical technique, to assess stiffness changes in normal and malignant breast epithelial spheroids over time. Understanding these mechanical signatures …
