Dentistry

Abstract Background Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains challenging due to the limited efficacy and toxicity of current therapies. This study investigates the anticancer potential of Captopril–Montmorillonite (CP–MMT) (nanoclay-based delivery system), a drug-repurposing approach in which Captopril is incorporated within MMT nanoclay layered silicate carrier. To our knowledge, this formulation has not been previously investigated in OSCC cell lines, demonstrating enhanced anticancer efficacy. The aim of the work was to compare the anticancer effects of CP–MMT formulation with free Captopril in OSCC cell lines, focusing on cytotoxicity, apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest, oxidative stress, and key molecular markers. Methods CP–MMT nanoclay-based formulation …

Dentistry

Fully digital workflows are increasingly used in implant prosthodontics; however, completely edentulous full-arch rehabilitations remain challenging because implant position transfer and passive framework fit are susceptible to cumulative scanning and registration errors. Clinical evidence on artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted completearch implant impression workflows remains limited. This multicenter case series aimed to describe the clinical feasibility of an AI-assisted digital workflow (SmartX) combined with extended scan bodies for all-on-X full-arch implant-supported rehabilitations. Ten completely edentulous patients rehabilitated with all-on-X implant-supported fullarch prostheses were included. Digital impressions were obtained using SmartFlag scan bodies and an AI-assisted SmartX workflow with an intraoral scanner. The …

When Drug Repurposing Backfires: Antagonistic Effects Of Ivermectin On Cisplatin Therapy In Oral Cancer, Dalia Ghalwash, Rana Tantawy, Shereen Nader, Ayman Elgawish

Dentistry

Abstract

Background

Cisplatin (CIS) remains the gold standard chemotherapeutic agent for the management of oral cancer. However, its clinical efficacy is frequently limited by chemoresistance and dose-dependent toxicities. Ivermectin (IVM), a well-established antiparasitic agent with emerging anticancer properties, has been proposed as a potential adjuvant capable of enhancing the antitumor efficacy of CIS.

Methods

In vitro experiments were conducted on HN9 oral squamous cell carcinoma cells, while OEC normal epithelial cells served as control. The experimental evaluation comprised the MTT assay for cell viability, Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining for apoptosis detection, cell cycle distribution analysis, quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) …

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao Jan 2026

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Swallowing is controlled by a distributed neural network spanning the brainstem central pattern generator, subcortical modulatory circuits, and cortical regions responsible for volitional planning and sensorimotor integration. Evidence from lesion studies, neuroimaging, and neurophysiology demonstrates that dysphagia arises from disruptions at different nodes of this network, producing lesion-specific impairment profiles rather than a uniform swallowing deficit. This network-based perspective has shifted rehabilitation from predominantly compensatory management toward mechanism-driven interventions aimed at restoring physiological function. Behavioral skill-training and resistance-based exercises harness motor learning and cortical plasticity, whereas neuromodulatory approaches—including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), pharyngeal electrical …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Selecting an appropriate non-instrumental dysphagia screening tool is a complex process. This scoping review aimed to identify dysphagia screening tools with established reliability and validity, and to develop administrator-based flowcharts to guide tool selection across different clinical populations. A scoping review was conducted using studies identified in CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science. Our search was guided by five keywords: “dysphagia,” “deglutition,” “screening,” “test,” and “measure.” Original studies about the development and validation of non-instrumental dysphagia screening tools were selected. Six reviewers were involved in the review process, and at least two reviewers independently completed each step of …

Dysphagia And Rehabilitation In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Jong Mi Park, Seo Yeon Yoon Jan 2026

Dysphagia And Rehabilitation In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Jong Mi Park, Seo Yeon Yoon

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Dysphagia is one of the most clinically important complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). It impairs nutrition and quality of life and is closely linked to aspiration pneumonia, a leading cause of death in this population. It is often underrecognized, partly because subjective complaints underestimate the impairment found on objective testing, and partly because silent aspiration progresses without a protective cough. This review examines dysphagia in PD from a rehabilitation perspective, covering its pathophysiology, clinical features, assessment, and the evidence for rehabilitative interventions. Parkinsonian dysphagia arises from dopaminergic, non-dopaminergic, and peripheral mechanisms, and because it responds inconsistently to levodopa, rehabilitation has …

Social Support As An Effect Modifier Of The Assocation Between Drug-Use Related Stigma And History Of Substance Use During Pregnancy Among Women Who Use Unprescribed Opioids In New York City: A Cross-Sectional Study, Isabelle C. Lynch Jan 2026

Social Support As An Effect Modifier Of The Assocation Between Drug-Use Related Stigma And History Of Substance Use During Pregnancy Among Women Who Use Unprescribed Opioids In New York City: A Cross-Sectional Study, Isabelle C. Lynch

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Substance use and misuse among women who are pregnant is a growing public health concern in the United States. Overdose deaths are now a leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women, and neonatal abstinence syndrome rates have increased to 23 per 1000 births. A barrier addressing substance use among these women is social stigma, which in part is driven by punitive drug policies that criminalize substance use during pregnancy and societal gender roles and norms surrounding women’s substance use. Social support, including emotional, instrumental, and informational support, can serve to mitigate the negative impacts of stigma on health …
