Introduction: Lattice radiation therapy (LRT), a form of spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT), has shown promise in treating bulky tumors. It consists of hot and cold spots within the tumor, and the ratio between these doses is thought to be important in clinical outcomes. Respiratory motion is expected to degrade these peak-to-valley dose ratios (PVDRs) but has largely been ignored in LRT literature and clinical practice. This work aims to quantify the response of LRT dose distributions to motion to better inform motion management decisions and improve clinical outcomes.

Background: Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) offer a promising acellular therapy for immune modulation, but clinical translation is hindered by variability and storage constraints. Lyophilization (freeze-drying) could enable shelf-stable EV therapeutics, although its effects on biological activity remain incompletely defined.

Background and aims: Understanding the cells of origin is essential for overcoming therapy resistance and improving early intervention strategies in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Despite recent advances in genomic profiling, the precise cellular hierarchies and molecular programs driving ESCC initiation remain poorly defined.

Methods: We utilized machine learning-based single-cell trajectory analysis on 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced murine models and genetically engineered organoids to identify cellular lineages during tumorigenesis. Combined with gene regulatory network analysis, we identified transcriptional drivers of tumor initiation and employed transcriptome-based drug repurposing to predict compounds targeting these initiating populations.

PRDM1, encoding a transcription factor (TF), regulates plasma cell and CD8+ T-cell terminal differentiation and Th2 lineage specification, while its role in human NK-cell differentiation and homeostasis is largely unknown. Here, we employed a multi-omics approach to dissect the transcriptional control of PRDM1 on human NK-cells. PRDM1 is important in NK-cell terminal differentiation based on gene expression profiling and its targeting of key regulators in the process. PRDM1-deleted NK-cells displayed a less mature phenotype simulating the CD56bright NK-cell population accompanied by upregulation of stem-like gene signatures. WNT4 is a secreted protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of cell fate and embryogenesis. Biallelic variants in WNT4 have been linked to SERKAL syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by 46,XX sex reversal and dysgenesis of the kidneys, adrenals, and lungs. SERKAL syndrome has only been described in a single consanguineous kindred with four affected fetuses. Additional features seen in a subset of affected fetuses included ventricular septal defect (VSD), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), and orofacial clefting (OFC). Nightmares have been shown to be associated with numerous forms of psychopathology, but the vast majority of this research has taken place in the general population and very little is known about their relation with psychopathology in those requiring inpatient hospitalization. In a sample of 1170 voluntarily admitted psychiatric inpatients, this study explores the frequency of reported nightmares in psychiatric inpatients with the aim of examining the prevalence of psychiatric diagnosis in those with and without clinically relevant nightmares. This study compares myocardial injury responses in human donor hearts from donation after brain death (DBD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD), with a focus on myocardial membrane integrity, pyroptosis, and damage. Unlike DCD hearts, which are exposed to varying durations of functional warm ischemic time (fWIT), DBD hearts, which are never subjected to warm ischemia, served as controls. Context: Meditation and mindfulness practices offer promising non-pharmacological alternatives for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) to improve their health and well-being, but integrating such practices into daily routines can be challenging.

Objectives: This survey study aims to identify motivators and barriers to engagement with meditation and mindfulness interventions among individuals with SCI.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adults with SCI (N = 94) from a single large acute rehabilitation center in the United States.

Poor diet and excess weight have been linked to increased risk for at least 13 types of cancer. Culinary medicine utilizes experiential cooking skill development to improve individuals’ capacity for healthy eating. Digital communication strategies offer pathways for scalable culinary medicine interventions, but little research has explored how online cooking tools could be leveraged for cancer prevention messaging. Interventional oncology (IO), a subspecialty of IR, focuses on the minimally invasive, image-guided intervention for cancer and cancer-related conditions. Background: Retropharyngeal lymph node (RPLN) metastases in thyroid cancer are rare, with optimal management underreported.

Methods: Retrospective study of consecutive thyroid cancer patients with RPLN metastases treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center between 2000 and 2024.

Results: One hundred and sixty-seven patients (75% differentiated, 21% medullary, 4% poorly differentiated thyroid cancer) were divided into three groups: active surveillance (AS) (13%), surgery (56%), and nonsurgical treatment (31%). In the AS group (median follow-up 2.3 years), RPLN metastases grew a median 3% (range: 0-56) or 0.02 cm (range: 0-0.7) per year. Background: Unplanned reintubation after combined heart-lung transplantation (HLT) significantly affects morbidity and mortality, yet national data are limited. We evaluated the incidence, predictors, timing, and outcomes associated with reintubation after HLT.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed adults undergoing primary HLT in the UNOS registry from January 2004 to September 2024. Patients were stratified by reintubation status (defined as re-established mechanical ventilation (MV) after initial extubation). Propensity matching (1:1) balanced recipient and donor characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression models identified independent risk factors.

Background: Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) affects approximately 39% of US women and increases risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Telomere length, a biomarker of cellular aging, is associated with CMS and may be influenced by physical activity (PA), potentially mitigating telomere shortening. Black women have higher CMS prevalence compared to white women and may exhibit distinct telomere length dynamics influenced by interactions between CMS and PA.

The present study, a community-engaged research initiative, was specifically designed to enhance MRI accessibility and optimize the overall experience for autistic Latino young adults. Crucially, we employed a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of the target community were central to every stage of inquiry. Bus drivers experience physical strain in areas such as the lower back, neck, hips, and knees. Long shifts, aging vehicles, and limited opportunities for movement can contribute to this discomfort. Occupational therapy (OT) is underrepresented in workplace ergonomics. However, its focus on the relationship between the person, environment, occupation, and performance provides a broader view of workplace needs. This capstone used the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model to develop an ergonomic toolkit for bus drivers.

My capstone project improves access to local resources that support recreational participation, well-being, and quality of life for individuals living with limb loss in the El Paso community. Limited awareness of available resources and gaps in services can create barriers to accessing care and participating in meaningful occupations. To address these barriers, I developed an accessible, centralized resource that connects individuals with community programs, recreational opportunities, adaptive activities, and support services. By increasing access to resources and education, the project promotes meaningful occupational participation through social and recreational engagement while advancing occupational justice by reducing barriers to community participation.

Purpose: This doctoral capstone project aimed to support financial well-being among UTEP students by providing accessible, occupation-based resources to promote healthy financial habits and routines.

Methods: An occupational therapy-informed financial wellness toolkit, Miner Money Matters, was developed as a website for UTEP students. The website included resources related to budgeting, financial habits and routines, saving money, financial aid, credit and debt, financial stress, family financial responsibilities, and campus support services. The toolkit was disseminated through campus presentations, stakeholder engagement, organizational outreach, and SGA social media.

Children with sensory processing challenges often experience difficulties participating in everyday activities while many families struggle to find trustworthy and evidence-based solutions. A needs assessment completed at Daisy Kids Care Pediatric Clinic identified the need for a free, accessible, educational resource to support families and caregivers. In response, Sunny Senses OT educational website was developed to provide evidence-based education, practical sensory strategies, and community resources to improve overall knowledge of sensory processing.
