Body composition variables are important when it comes to studying athletic performance. With an aging population, being actively engaged in athletic competition in one’s “golden years” is more common than in previous generations. However, there is a lack of normative data for senior athletes relative to their younger counterparts. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between age and both body fat percentage (%BF) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) in senior athletes and classify the percentile ranks of these body composition variables. METHODS: Data were collected using an InBody 770 Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis machine. Data …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Many individuals travel to high altitudes for recreational or occupational purposes. Hypobaric hypoxia (HH) at altitude decreases arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), reduces oxygen delivery to tissues, and can adversely affect organ function. Exercise, independent of HH, significantly decreases renal blood flow (RBF). Therefore, performing exercise in HH may further impair oxygen delivery and place additional strain on the kidneys. While the impact of chronic HH on kidneys has been documented, there is limited research on the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) under these conditions. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of acute HH exposure during intermittent exercise …

Can Passive Water Immersion Shape Force Production Capacity?, Joonsun Park, Talin Louder
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous studies have shown mechanistic neurophysiological evidence to foster motor cortical and plasticity alongside improved cerebral perfusion. Although evidence remains limited, these neural effects suggest passive immersion may enhance force output capacity. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of passive water immersion in a seated position on lower-extremity isometric strength as measured by isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) performance on land. METHODS: Thirty-three active young adults (age: 22.64 ± 4.18 years, height: 174.55 ± 10.28 cm, mass: 81.45 ± 18.77 kg) completed both land and water conditions (LC and WC), with pre- and post-tests using within …

Effect Of Previous Night Alcohol On Thermoregulatory And Physiological Strain During Prolonged Physical Work In The Heat, Marissa Ramirez, Jonathan W. Specht, Flavio De Castro Magalhaes, Fabiano Amorim, Whitley C. Atkins
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Many occupational workers engage in strenuous physical work in hot environments for prolonged periods, placing them at risk of heat-related illness due to increasing physiological strain identified by increasing core temperature (Tcore) and heart rate (HR). Lifestyle behaviors, such as smoking, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and sleep deprivation, may further exacerbate heat strain and increase susceptibility to heat-related illness. Notably, alcohol consumption the night before work, and the subsequent hangover, may amplify physiological strain by impairing heat dissipation. However, no previous studies have evaluated the impact of alcohol hangover on heat strain during physical work in the heat. PURPOSE: …

Sex-Specific Changes In Pbmc Mitochondrial Respiration Following Acute Exercise, Ryan R. Moon
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exercise-trained individuals exhibit greater immune system function, which may be attributed in part to enhanced peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) function. Exercise training is a potent stimulator of mitochondrial adaptation, which may help explain improvements in immunity. However, the mechanisms by which exercise acutely modulates PBMCs to promote beneficial adaptations remain unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a single bout of aerobic exercise modulates PBMC mitochondrial function. Methods: Twenty-eight healthy young adults (13 females, 15 males; age 21.84 ± 2.78 years) completed a graded exercise test (VO₂max: 41.4 ± 7.64 ml O₂·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) followed …

The Association Between Muscular Strength And C-Reactive Protein Among Post-Menopausal Women: Effect Modification By Hormone Replacement Therapy, Sarah Krager, Bethany Barone-Gibbs, Amanda Paluch, Samantha Ehrlich, Amy Miller, William Boyer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous studies suggest that the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) may be elevated in post-menopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Muscular strength is associated with more favorable CRP profiles. However, this association has not been examined among post-menopausal women on HRT. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the association of lower leg strength and CRP while considering potential effect modification by HRT using a representative sample of U.S. adults. METHODS: The final sample (n=1,238) included post-menopausal women (≥50 years) who participated in the 1999-2002 National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES). CRP was examined continuously and categorically (/dl vs 3-10 …

Possible Intervertebral Disc Disease Related To Ventricular Tachycardia In A Labrador Retriever, Nadthagarn Glaewketgarn, Sirilak Disatian Surachetpong
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Ventricular arrhythmia (VA) is a common arrhythmia in dogs. Several extracardiac causes such as pain may contribute this condition. This case report describes a 9-year-old neutered male Labrador Retriever with ventricular tachycardia (VT) potentially related to severe neck pain due to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The dog was referred with a sign of inability to walk, tachypnea and an irregular heartbeat. Electrocardiography confirmed VT at 160-200 bpm and an increased cardiac troponin I level (35.22 ng/ml). Despite antiarrhythmic treatment, the VT persisted. Cardiac evaluation revealed no structural abnormalities. Interestingly, VT episodes were provoked by cervical palpation and resolved following analgesic …

Myeloid cells are highly heterogeneous and play key roles in establishing an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), but the mechanisms controlling their differentiation remain unclear. Using orthotopic murine breast cancer models, we investigated how interleukin-1α (IL-1α) influences this process. Deletion of host Il1α resulted in rejection of transplanted tumors. Single-cell RNA sequencing identified CX3CR1⁺ macrophages as the main source of IL-1α in the TME. Il1α deficiency disrupted monocyte–macrophage differentiation, reducing CX3CR1⁺ macrophages and increasing iNOS⁺ macrophages. Myeloid cells from Il1α⁻/⁻ hosts induced lower PD-1 and CTLA-4 expression in co-cultured CD8⁺ T cells than those from wild-type hosts. CellChat analysis showed …

The ubiquitous availability of work-related applications on personal devices makes healthcare workers prone to working during leisure time. We tested the hypothesis that an intervention to reduce work-related screen time during a weekend off reduces stress in healthcare workers in a pragmatic parallel design randomized controlled trial between November 2021 and November 2023. Healthcare workers using a smartphone with a work email application were eligible. Randomization was 1:1 to no treatment or a threefold educational intervention to: 1) activate automated responses to emails received, 2) reduce screen time, and 3) uninstall work applications from personal devices. The primary outcome was …

Forkhead box class O1 (FOXO1) and fas-associated death domain (FADD) regulate cell death pathways and homeostatic processes such as cell cycle progression and apoptosis. FADD phosphorylation promotes nuclear localization of FOXO1, and FOXO1 regulates FADD expression. Therefore, it is plausible that FOXO1 and FADD have synergistic or antagonistic effects on cell cycle regulation and the response to anticancer drug treatment in cancer cells. In the present study, we report that AS1842856-mediated inhibition of FOXO1 reverses anticancer drug-induced cytotoxicity, while FADD knockdown increases anticancer drug-induced cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma (OS). Reversed anticancer drug-induced cytotoxicity was accompanied by G2/M cell cycle arrest and …

Serious mental illnesses (SMIs), including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, have long been linked to cognitive decline, multiple chronic medical conditions, and premature mortality. These factors significantly contribute to the severe disability seen in SMIs, extending beyond the severity of psychopathology and indicating a premature aging phenotype associated with these conditions. The mechanisms that underlie the relationship between SMIs and the premature aging phenotype are not well understood, but recent evidence suggests that individuals with SMIs may exhibit accelerated biological aging. In this review, we present a comprehensive analysis of the current literature, demonstrating the potential association of …

Successful translation of medical devices from the bench to the bedside is conditioned by the accurate estimation of market opportunities. Because market conditions can change significantly over time, this assessment is challenging in the early stages of technological development. In this study a qualitative analysis of market trends and regulatory frameworks was conducted to assess how transient market conditions influence the development and distribution of nanomedical technologies, using nanotechnologies developed for COVID-19 as the example. The findings demonstrate that the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a volatile market for nanomedical solutions, discouraging private sector investment and …

Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) are common in patients with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), but the literature remains inconclusive regarding the benefits of an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) in this population, especially in those with a preexisting device before LVAD implantation. Here, we report the acute hemodynamic consequences of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia in a patient with a preexisting biventricular AICD who was implanted with an LVAD (HeartMate 3). This case underscores the importance of considering AICD placement on a case-by-case basis and highlights the need for a well-designed study to establish its benefit in this population.

Purpose: This study examined the effects of sustained, isometric forearm flexion tasks anchored to ratings of perceived exertion of 2 (RPE2FT) versus 8 (RPE8FT) on the wavelet-based mechanomyographic (MMG) intensity responses from pretest and posttest maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) as well as the time course of changes in the MMG intensity responses throughout the sustained tasks. Methods: Eleven men (mean±SD: age=20.9±2.3 yrs) performed MVICs before and after the sustained tasks. The wavelet analyses decomposed the MMG signals onto a set of 11 wavelet bands (WBs). Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to analyze the MMG intensity …

The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to accessing mental health support for college students from the perspective of college faculty counselors. In 2022, research indicated that over 60% of college students met the criteria for one or more mental health conditions (Lipson et al., 2022), though data published in the same year revealed that practitioners employed at colleges and universities are only supporting an average of 12.2% of the student population (Bruns et al., 2023). While college counseling centers have reported increasing usage rates, there remains a gap in the number of students utilizing services versus those …

BACKGROUND: AVEIR DR, an industry-first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker (LP), provides continuous atrioventricular synchrony through implant-to-implant (i2i) communication between atrial and ventricular LP devices. It is important to evaluate the early real-world comparative safety of AVEIR DR LP.
OBJECTIVE: To compare complications and mortality between AVEIR DR LP and dual-chamber transvenous pacemakers (TP).
METHODS: De novo LP and TP patients were identified in Medicare Fee-for-Service claims (October 2023 and December 2024). Outcomes were 30-day and 6-month complications, reinterventions, heart failure hospitalizations, and all-cause mortality. Comparisons were adjusted for demographics, comorbidities, and hospital encounter characteristics.
RESULTS: Compared to TP (N = 77 …

Creating genetic sensors for noninvasive visualization of biological activities in optically opaque tissues holds immense potential for basic research and the development of genetic and cell-based therapies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) stands out among deep tissue imaging methods for its ability to generate high-resolution images without ionizing radiation. However, the adoption of MRI as a mainstream biomolecular technology has been hindered by the lack of adaptable methods to link molecular events with genetically encodable contrast. Here, we introduce modular aquaporin-based protease-activatable probes for enhanced reporting (MAPPER), a platform for the systematic creation of genetic sensors for MRI. To develop MAPPER, …
