Introduction
Prosocial behaviors (i.e., being kind, caring, and cooperative) are believed to shape health and well-being starting in childhood. Yet, limited research has examined their long-term impact on health outcomes later in life. This study examined associations between childhood prosocial behaviors and fruit and vegetable consumption patterns across adolescence. Methods
Participants were from the United Kingdom Millennium Cohort Study (N=6,265). Caregivers reported children’s prosocial behaviors using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at ages 5 (2005–2007), 7 (2007–2009), and 11 (2011–2013) years. In 2024, Poisson regression was conducted to assess the associations between prosocial behaviors at age 5 years and sustained …Intouch Week Of August 11, 2025, New York Medical College

Purpose: Hippocampal avoidance (HA) during therapeutic whole-brain radiotherapy reduces the risk of neurocognitive function (NCF) toxicity in patients with brain metastasis. This trial hypothesized that HA during prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) leads to noninferior intracranial relapse (ICR) and reduction in NCF toxicity.
Methods: This randomized phase II/III trial enrolled patients with SCLC, no brain metastases, and response to chemotherapy. The primary end points were 12-month ICR (noninferiority design, randomized phase II) and 6-month Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) Delayed Recall (DR) failure (phase III). Secondary end points were failure in any NCF …

KRAS mutations frequently co-occur with alterations in STK11/LKB1 and/or KEAP1, defining an aggressive subset of lung cancers resistant to immuno- and chemotherapy. While LKB1 loss is associated with vulnerability to DNA damage response-based therapies, the impact of KEAP1 alterations remains unknown. We demonstrate that KEAP1-NRF2 pathway drives a compensatory modulation of ATR-CHK1 signaling, enhancing vulnerability to ATR inhibitors (ATRi), particularly in the setting of increased replication stress associated with LKB1 loss. ATRi shows enhanced anti-tumor activity in LKB1 and/or KEAP1-deficient non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) models and synergizes with gemcitabine. ATRi also enhances antitumor immunity and mitigates the immunosuppressed phenotype …

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key regulators of gene expression and cellular signaling in cancer. Their functions are primarily mediated through interactions with specific protein partners that modulate chromatin structure, epigenetic remodeling, transcription, and signal transduction. In this review, we explore reports and strategies for the proteomic characterization of lncRNA-associated proteins, particularly emphasizing high-throughput liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based techniques. Affinity-based methods such as RNA pull-down, ChIRP MS, RAP-MS, BioID-MS, and SILAC-MS enable sensitive and specific mapping of lncRNA and protein complexes. These approaches reveal cancer-specific proteomic signatures, post-translational modifications, and mechanistic insights into tumor biology. The use …

Botulinum Toxin For The Treatment Of Tremors, Steven Bellows, Joseph Jankovic
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Tremor, an oscillatory movement disorder, is commonly encountered in clinical practice in the setting of a variety of etiologies, such as essential tremor and Parkinson's disease. Despite its high prevalence, treatment options are somewhat limited. Oral medications are often ineffective or limited by side effects, and other treatments, such as deep brain stimulation, are more invasive and costly. Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections are a well-established therapy in the treatment of dystonia, but its use in the treatment of tremors has not been fully explored. In this review, we discuss the available randomized controlled trials and open-label evidence for the use …

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles As Delivery Vehicles For Different Pt (Ii)-Drugs: Experimental And Theoretical Evaluation, Shahdan Abdelkareem
Theses and Dissertations
Platinum(II)-based chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and nedaplatin are mainstays in the treatment of a wide range of solid tumors, yet their clinical application is severely restricted by rapid degradation, poor bioavailability, and dose-limiting side effects. These challenges arise in part from the drugs’ susceptibility to premature hydrolysis, off-target interactions in the bloodstream, and degradation in the gastrointestinal tract, which collectively limit their ability to reach and act on tumor cells. To address these limitations, we explored the use of copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) as nanocarriers for platinum(II) drugs, aiming to enhance drug stability, loading, and controlled release. …

PI3K inhibition causes apoptosis selectively in NOTCH1-mutant head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but modest single-agent responses and acquired resistance (AR) limit the clinical efficacy of targeted agents. To address these limitations, we investigated novel combination therapies. We tested the efficacy of 5768 compounds as single agents and 139 in combination with PI3K inhibitors in sensitive and AR NOTCH1-mutant HNSCC cell lines. We generated synergy/efficacy classifications for the combinations using multiple metrics of statistical drug synergy and growth rate indices. The PLK1/PI3K combination's efficacy was validated using orthogonal in vitro methods and in two HNSCC xenograft models. Compound efficacy …

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a malignancy arising from the nasopharyngeal epithelium, is common in the east and southeast area of Asia. Treatments for locally advanced and recurrent NPC include chemotherapy (usually combined with 5-Fluorouracil, 5-FU) and radiotherapy, but response is limited due to chemo-resistance. p53 mutation is a critical factor for 5-FU resistance in some cancers, but its role in NPC chemo-resistance remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that p53(R280T), a common p53 somatic mutation found in multiple NPC tumor samples, induces gain-of-function upregulation of DNA repair genes which leads to 5-FU resistance in NPC. p53(R280T) specifically upregulates the expression of DNA …

Qualified clinicians previously required a practitioner waiver (i.e., “DATA-waiver” or "X-waiver") to offer buprenorphine, a medication for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, many counties in the US experience fewer buprenorphine prescriptions due to factors such as “DATA-waiver” providers underutilizing their buprenorphine prescribing ability. Our study aimed to compare the availability of active buprenorphine-prescribing clinicians in California to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA)-listed DATA waived prescribers under each 5-digit ZIP Code. This study utilized the buprenorphine prescription record data in 2021 from California’s Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). The list of the locators for …

Impact Of Primary Preventive Initiatives To Reduce Burnout And Compassion Fatigue In Emergency Department Nurses, Kelley Molandes
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Background and significance: It is estimated that 20% of nurses leave the profession within the first year due to an onset of burnout (Henson, 2020). Prior to the pandemic of 2020, workforce projected models estimated large-scale shortages in full time employee (FTE) registered nurses as demand continued to outpace supply (Lauer, 2022). Researchers estimate projections from 2024 into the year 2032 are now skewed, as pandemic-related contributors and their effects on burnout in the nursing profession have not been thoroughly assessed (Saravanan et al., 2022). When considering the data, an underlying need for burnout prevention amongst nurse residents emerges. Interventions …

Enhancing Target Dose Conformity While Effectively Sparing The Spinal Cord In Proton Arc Treatment Plans For Cervical Chordomas And Chondrosarcomas, Jon Blalock
Masters Projects
Cervical spinal chordomas and chondrosarcomas present significant therapeutic challenges due to their proximity to the spinal cord and resistance to conventional radiotherapy. This retrospective study investigated the capability of proton arc therapy (PAT) to maintain or improve adequate target coverage while reducing dose to the spinal cord for cervical spinal chordomas and chondrosarcomas over standard fixed beam intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). While both IMPT and PAT use pencil beam scanning (PBS) to with energy modulation to deliver dose in discrete layers, IMPT relies on a limited number of fixed beam angles, whereas PAT delivers dose over an arc trajectory. …

Qualified clinicians previously required a practitioner waiver (i.e., "DATA-waiver" or "X-waiver") to offer buprenorphine, a medication for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, many counties in the US experience fewer buprenorphine prescriptions due to factors such as "DATA-waiver" providers underutilizing their buprenorphine prescribing ability. Our study aimed to compare the availability of active buprenorphine-prescribing clinicians in California to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA)-listed DATA waived prescribers under each 5-digit ZIP Code. This study utilized the buprenorphine prescription record data in 2021 from California's Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). The list of the locators for …

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) contribute greatly to the burden of healthcare-associated infections. Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative bacterium with high levels of antibiotic resistance that is of increasing concern as a CAUTI pathogen. A. baumannii expresses fibrinogen-binding adhesins (Abp1D and Abp2D) that mediate biofilm formation on catheters, which become coated with fibrinogen upon insertion. Here we develop a protein subunit vaccine against the Abp1D and Abp2D receptor binding domains (RBD) and show that vaccination significantly reduces bacterial titers in a female mouse model of CAUTI. We further demonstrate that immunity to Abp2D

The World Health Assembly has recognized the current and future place of education, training, and development within their 2030 global strategy. While education in allied health professions continues to evolve, limited information is known about the challenges graduate students face when transitioning into these programs. In response to recent societal and educational shifts, a systematic review was conducted to explore the academic, psychological, social, and professional barriers affecting first-term allied health students. Utilizing the SPIDER framework along with searching across different platforms (Psychinfo, Web of Science, and ProQuest) to locate peer-reviewed studies published within the last five years. Forty-seven studies …
