Effective mentorship is fundamental to professional development in nursing; however, there are limited initiatives that cater to the unique cultural and contextual needs of Filipino American nurses. To bridge this gap, the Philippine Nurses Association of America launched its Patnubay sa Pagtatagumpay Program (P3). This innovative initiative offers a culturally tailored approach to mentorship, incorporating features such as mentor-mentee pairings, structured goal setting, and year-long cohort support. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the P3 program, with initial outcomes indicating high overall satisfaction from both participants. By demonstrating that culturally focused mentorship can effectively meet the specific needs of a …

Background: In November 1940, the LSU Medical Center organized the 64th US Army General Hospital to serve in the Mediterranean from 1943 to 1945. In the 1970s, members of the unit donated approximately 3000 items to a faculty member, who then donated that collection to the LSU Health Libraries; it comprises photographs, newsletters, Army reports, interviews, and correspondences. In 2011, the Libraries faculty & staff undertook digitizing and describing the collection. In 2025, given the advances made in technology since the original project, it was decided to reassess both the physical and digital versions of the collection.

Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation (PARylation) is a post-translational modification mediated by ADP-ribosyltransferases, known as PARPs, which attach ADP-ribose units onto proteins, forming negatively charged multimeric chains. This modification relaxes chromatin at DNA damage sites, facilitating repair machinery access. Additionally, PAR polymers serve as docking platforms for effector proteins, termed PAR "readers", commonly involved in DNA repair. The recruitment of these proteins is mediated through conserved protein domains, including RNA recognition motifs (RRMs). Using an array of hundreds of recombinant RNA-binding domains, we systematically examined RRM interactions with PAR chains of varying lengths. Despite their chemical similarity to RNA, only a small subset of …

Kidneys are central in maintaining acid-base homeostasis by recovering filtered bicarbonate (HCO3-) in the proximal tubule and by secreting H+ in the collecting duct. Here, we demonstrate a critical role of the exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac) signaling, and particularly the Epac2, in governing renal adaptation to dietary acid load. RNAseq analysis of the renal cortical area revealed that Epac1&2 deficiency was associated with changes in gene profile seen in acidosis. Renal expression of Epac2 but not Epac1 was enhanced by acid load. Epac2-/- mice developed a pronounced metabolic acidosis due to the inability to acidify urine in …

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an NAD+-dependent histone deacetylase, exerts complex and context-dependent effects in breast and gynecological cancers. By deacetylating histone and non-histone proteins such as p53, FOXO, and NF-κB, SIRT1 regulates essential processes including DNA repair, apoptosis, metabolism, and stress response. In breast cancer, SIRT1 may act as a tumor suppressor in early stages by maintaining genomic stability but promotes epithelial–mesenchymal transition, metastasis, and chemoresistance in aggressive subtypes such as triple-negative breast cancer. Similarly, in gynecological cancers, SIRT1 displays dual roles: promoting proliferation via estrogen signaling and p53/FOXO1 inhibition in Type I endometrial cancer yet potentially supporting DNA repair in …

Controlling stem cell differentiation is a longstanding goal in biomedical research. Here we explore how cell fate is influenced by RNA condensates, specifically P-bodies, which modulate gene expression posttranscriptionally. We profiled the transcriptomes of biomolecular condensates in diverse developmental contexts spanning multiple vertebrate species. Our analyses revealed conserved, cell type-specific sequestration of untranslated RNAs encoding cell fate regulators. P-body RNA contents do not reflect active gene expression in each cell type but are enriched for translationally repressed transcripts characteristic of the preceding developmental stage. Mechanistically, P-body contents are controlled by microRNAs and can be profoundly reshaped by perturbing AGO2 or …

Stem cell niches are essential for regulating stem cell self-renewal and differentiation during tissue repair and regeneration. However, the mechanisms supporting stem cell function in highly regenerative organisms, such as the freshwater planarian Schmidtea mediterranea, remain unclear. Using spatial transcriptomics, we identified two cell types associated with planarian stem cells: secretory cells we term "hecatonoblasts" and intestinal cells. Surprisingly, while hecatonoblasts were in close physical proximity to stem cells in the mesenchyme, they were dispensable for regeneration. In contrast, intestinal cells, despite lacking direct contact with stem cells, regulated both their position and function during regeneration. Electron microscopy revealed diverse …

CD8+ T cell exhaustion limits immune responses during cancer and chronic infection. We identify CD7 as a tissue-specific regulator of terminally exhausted CD8+ T cells during chronic infection. CD7 expression progressively increases during exhaustion, reaching its highest levels on a subset of CD101+Tim3low terminally exhausted cells that arise in the liver. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that CD7-deficient terminally exhausted cells display altered expression of co-stimulatory, translational, and effector genes, correlating with markedly reduced persistence and increased apoptotic susceptibility. Importantly, CD7 is preferentially upregulated on PD-1+CD39+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), suggesting CD7 may play …

Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Objective: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) contain valuable information that can be leveraged by providers to perform timely interventions and improve quality of life and survival. However, the implementation of electronic PROs (ePROs) remains a challenge from technical and evaluation perspectives. Our objective was to construct a robust electronic health record (EHR)-integrated ePRO information infrastructure founded on RE-AIM (reach-effectiveness-adoption-implementation-maintenance) principles.
Materials and Methods: We used Epic Systems as our EHR platform to build the MD Anderson Symptom Index Head and Neck Module (MDASI-HN) for release to all patients undergoing evaluation and/or treatment in our HN Radiation Oncology clinics. RE-AIM metrics were …

Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Introduction: The growing emphasis on patient-centered care, along with the rise of open-access publications and online platforms, has increased patient demand for education about their medical conditions. In this context, patient-friendly language summaries of fundamental cancer clinical trials may be valuable resources for patients to learn more about their disease and treatment options.
Methods: We surveyed patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to assess the availability and need for easy-to-understand resources related to treatment decision-making and side effect profiles. Patients were also provided an example patient-friendly language summary and asked for feedback.
Results: One hundred fourteen patients responded …

Burnout afflicts 35% to 44% of pediatric oncology physicians, nurses, and interprofessional staff and is related to excessive workloads and emotional exhaustion. Conversely, a healthy work environment is a protective factor for burnout among physicians and nurses. Meaningful recognition is a published standard necessary for creating a healthy work environment. This study aimed to reduce staff burnout through firgun, defined as a heartfelt way to express accomplishments of another person. Pediatric oncology staff completed a firgun educational module and logged acts of firgun during a 3-month study period. Validated measures assessing burnout, workplace civility, well-being, work-life balance, and perceived …
