Categorizing Clinical Response To Mepolizumab For Patients With Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps: Synapse Trial, Claire Hopkins, Larry Borish, Jared Silver, Peter Howarth, Robert Chan, Priya Dsilva, Joseph K. Han
Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) Faculty Publications
[Introduction] Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) can substantially affect quality of life (QoL), and is often challenging to manage.¹ First-line treatment for the management of CRSwNP involves intranasal corticosteroids, with short courses of systemic corticosteroids (SCS) for exacerbations, and sinus surgery for uncontrolled disease.² Biologics targeting type 2 inflammation (eg, dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab) have become a treatment option for refractory CRSwNP. With the advent of disease-modifying treatments such as biologics, control, defined as patients reporting no/low-symptom levels, has increasingly become the treatment goal for CRSwNP.³ However, the optimal use of biologics for symptom control in individual patients remains …

Acute Exacerbations Of Chronic Rhinosinusitis, Robert M. Frederick, Kent Lam, Joseph K. Han
Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review
We aim to highlight recent advancements on the evolving chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) phenotype: acute exacerbations of chronic rhinosinusitis (AECRS). We focused on studies that expanded the current understanding of its pathophysiology, patient characteristics, and disease burden.
Recent findings
Defining AECRS has been a topic of discussion for many years. A recent regulatory definition of AECRS in the literature incorporates a > 3 day requirement of worsened symptoms and an escalation of treatment. It is important not to rely on patient-reported rescue medication frequency as it was recently demonstrated these are only obtained for 1/3 of reported AECRS episodes. …

Effects Of Invigorating And Relaxing Music On Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, And Heart Rate Variability, Matthew Joshua Faur
Effects Of Invigorating And Relaxing Music On Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, And Heart Rate Variability, Matthew Joshua Faur
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Heart-rate variability (HRV) has been documented to correlate with several health measures, including autonomic nervous system longevity and athletic performance (Zulfiqar, 2010). While increasing age does not affect heart rate, there is a steady decline in HRV, which is a biological marker of aging and the decline of autonomic nervous system function. Furthermore, men who exercise regularly tend to have increased HRV, suggesting a mitigation of the typical age-dependent loss of HRV (Kristal-Boneh et al., 1995). Previous studies have suggested that music may have a physiological effect (e.g., fluctuating vitals, emotional changes) on cardiovascular parameters. However, little is known about …

Associations Between Brain White Matter Hyperintensities And Diet Quality In Cognitive Aging: A Cross-Sectional Assessment, Carla V. Urdaneta
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Leukoaraiosis, or White Matter Lesions (WMLs)/White Matter Hyperintensities (WMHs), are often considered markers of aging and neurodegeneration. White matter hyperintensities appear as lighter, hyperintense regions on T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and are physiologically characterized as demyelination and axonal loss reflected as microvascular lesions in cerebral white matter (Marseglia et. al., 2019). These anatomical landmarks are most seen in MRIs of elderly individuals. They can be associated with aging and cognitive decline, including affected frontal lobe function and episodic memory in the form of delayed recall performance and are linked to several cardiovascular risk factors, …

Respiratory Cycle Influence On Lumbosacral Muscle Function: A Tensiomyographic Analysis, Anthony Trombetta
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Introduction:
Tensiomyography (TMG) has significant potential in examining muscle functionality while evading the limitations found in other methods muscle analysis. Specifically, the erector spinae and other lumbosacral muscles can be analyzed with little challenge. Such analyses include data on muscle displacement (Dm), delay time (Td), contraction time (Tc), half-relaxation time (Tr), and sustain time (Ts). Of these parameters, the most evaluated and with the highest level of reliability are Dm, Td, and Tc. However, stiffness of the lumbar spine and lumbosacral muscles fluctuates throughout the respiratory cycle. These fluctuations may pose an issue when examining the functionality of muscles. This …

Investigating The Effects Of A Psychoplastogen On Depressive-Like Behaviors In Huntington Disease Model Mice, Kaleigh M. Hanley
Investigating The Effects Of A Psychoplastogen On Depressive-Like Behaviors In Huntington Disease Model Mice, Kaleigh M. Hanley
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Huntington Disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expansion in the trinucleotide CAG repeat on exon 1 of the huntingtin gene. In HD one of the first symptoms is often depression. In cases where SSRIs fail, treatments for treatment-resistant depression often become a patient’s only option. These rigorous treatments, such as electroconvulsive therapy, are not suitable for this patient population as it can worsen motor symptoms. In order to search for potential alternatives, we queried whether depressive-like behavior could be reduced in Hu97/18 and Q175FDN HD mice by administering tabernanthalog, a non-hallucinogenic psychedelic analog. Our study is not …

Effect Of Metal Ions On The Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging Capabilities Of Cerium Oxide For Biological Applications, Agastya Mittal
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Ceria nanoparticles' capabilities to defend cells against oxidative stress through superoxide dismutase activity are well-documented. Ceria nanoparticles demonstrate a ratio between 3+/4+ oxidative states on the surface of the particles to exhibit oxygen vacancies, a feature that allows these particles to scavenge Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in times of Oxidative Stress. Oxidative stress arises from many wounds in the body, such as wounds in the skin, and can have significant impacts on the health of an individual. Even when receiving treatment for the skin wound, ROS can circulate from around the wound, be generated from an imbalance …

Investigating The Role Of Prostasin In Angiogenesis: A Chorioallantoic Membrane Model Approach, Zaima Aline
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Prostasin, also known as PRSS8 or CAP1, is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored extracellular serine protease involved in various physiological and pathophysiological processes. Prostasin expression is observed during key phases of trophoblast invasion and placental development, critical steps in embryo implantation in Rhesus monkeys. This suggests a role for prostasin in extracellular matrix remodeling and tissue invasion, both essential for a healthy pregnancy. Moreover, prostasin appears vital for development as studies in mice show that a germline knockout of the gene leads to significant placental defects and eventual embryonic death, highlighting its importance in vascular and structural development within the placenta.

Examining The Effect Of A High Fat Diet On The Expression Of Adipokines In A Murine Model Of Barrett's Esophagus, Saagar A. Shah
Examining The Effect Of A High Fat Diet On The Expression Of Adipokines In A Murine Model Of Barrett's Esophagus, Saagar A. Shah
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Chronic acid reflux results in injury to the esophagus and the development of Barrett’s Esophagus (BE). BE elevates the lifetime risk for a patient to develop Esophageal Adenocarcinoma (EAC). Clinically, one of the main risk factors for BE and EAC is obesity, which alters the secretion of inflammatory cytokines by adipocytes, also referred to as adipokines. Conflicting reports have been made to the expression of adipokines and their receptors in the progression to esophageal cancer. Utilizing an inflammation-based mouse model for BE, we hypothesize that alterations in the expression of adipokines and their receptors favor an inflammatory environment associated with …
