Four Seasons From The Bear Mountain Bridge, Steven Chen

Quill & Scope

In every season, I visited the Bear Mountain Bridge and captured the same view of a southbound Amtrak train gliding along the east side of the Hudson River on its journey to Penn Station in New York City. Traveling alongside the Hudson, Amtrak forms an essential part of the passenger commute between places like Burlington, VT; Chicago, IL; Albany, NY; and New York City. I enjoyed exploring this area throughout all four seasons, and I hope this photo conveys some of my excitement and appreciation for its natural beauty. // 2024-2025

"The Perfect Storm": Weathering Black Racial Trauma Across The Lifespan And The Impact Of Covid-19, Taryne M. Mingo, Kiauhna Haynes

Adultspan Journal

Descendants of Africans Enslaved in the United States (DAEUS), who lived in the South prior to 1965 and experienced decades of legalized discrimination, were found to have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Arline Geronimus (1992) coined the term “weathering” to acknowledge the accumulation of racial trauma stored within the body over extended periods of time. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study, aligned by the tenets of Critical Race Theory, explores how continuous racial trauma impacted DAEUS citizens’ well-being and trust in the COVID-19 vaccine. Three Group Experiential Themes emerged during this study, all connected with the experiences …

Honors Theses

Stressors and trauma in life are unavoidable. However, the way we respond and adapt to them can be within our control. This response differs from person to person, but there are factors that can influence the likelihood of an individual rebounding from a crisis, as well as factors that can put them at a higher risk of developing mental illness. One of the main factors that influences Psychological Well Being is the presence of Resilience.

The main goal of this study was to examine how factors of Resilience relate to Psychological Well Being and COVID-19 Well Being during the COVID-19 …

Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology

Nodal follicular helper T-cell (TFH) lymphoma of the angioimmunoblastic (AITL) subtype has a dismal prognosis. Using whole-exome sequencing (n = 124), transcriptomic (n = 78), and methylation (n = 40) analysis, we identified recurrent mutations in known epigenetic drivers (TET2, DNMT3A, IDH2R172) and novel ones (TET3, KMT2D). TET2, IDH2R172, DNMT3A co-mutated AITLs had poor prognosis (p < 0.0001). Genes regulating T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling (CD28, PLCG1, VAV1, FYN) or activation (RHOAG17V) or regulators of the PI3K-pathway (PIK(3)C members, PTEN, PHLPP1, PHLPP2) were mutated. CD28 mutation/fusion was associated with poor prognosis (p = 0.02). WES of purified, neoplastic T-cell (CD3+PD1+) demonstrated high concordance with …

Confronting Indecision, Lane Allison Murray

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education

This course aims to increase students' understanding of indecision and how to confront it. The class provides insight into how the fear of the unknown holds people back from making decisions and about understanding one's values as a means to combat indecision. Students and teachers alike explore instances of indecision and evaluate their own impulses & thought processes by reflecting on the deeper reasons for their choices. Students will increase their comfort level of asking themselves and their peers questions about the values that guide them and, in doing so, strengthen their relationships with themselves and others.

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Mindfulness in Homeless Women Experiencing Anxiety

Half of Washington's homeless population resides in Seattle, King County (Axios, 2024). In response, seven Seattle Pacific University nursing students conducted an assessment on homeless women in Seattle. Partnering with a women’s day center, we assessed their health needs and barriers as part of a nursing leadership project. Through activities like bingo, we aimed to build trust and surveyed the women and staff on health concerns. Our findings revealed chronic anxiety as a key issue, leading to underutilization of health resources. Such resources include a mobile emergent dental van that previous nursing students earned …

Pharmacy

Background: Glioma remains an intractable and highly aggressive brain tumor, mainly due to the daunting obstacle presented by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). To overcome this challenge and enhance therapeutic efficacy, a dual-drug delivery system was engineered. This system co-encapsulated curcumin, a nutraceutical with multitargeted anticancer potential, with atorvastatin calcium, a repurposed anticancer agent, within lipidic nanocapsules (LNCs). Methods: LNCs were prepared via the phase inversion temperature method and optimized using a Box–Behnken design. The optimized LNCs were subsequently functionalized with folic acid (FA) to enable active targeting. FA-LNCs were characterized using, XPS, TEM, in vitro release, and MTT cytotoxicity …

Purpose: The purpose of this QI project was to create a standardized order set aiming to increase consistency in lab work completion for improved monitoring of pituitary dysfunction in patients diagnosed with sinonasal and nasopharyngeal malignancies. Background: Radiation therapy is important in the treatment plan for this population. The hypothalamic-pituitary axis is frequently included within the radiation field, contributing to radiation induced pituitary dysfunction. There is no established order set for outpatient pituitary lab monitoring at the organization. Methods: Established order sets were modified to include pituitary labs to create a centralized ordering workflow among providers from all three departments …

Negotiating With-Ness: Midwives' Lived Experiences Of Gender, Inclusive Language, And Professional Identity., Kimberley-Ann De Wet Jan 2025

Negotiating With-Ness: Midwives' Lived Experiences Of Gender, Inclusive Language, And Professional Identity., Kimberley-Ann De Wet

Theses

This research investigated midwives lived experiences of using gender-inclusive language in public maternity care, examining how linguistic practices intersect with professional identity, ethical commitment, and institutional constraint. Informed by feminist theory and guided by descriptive phenomenology with a constructivist paradigm, the study explored how midwives navigate the profession’s foundational ethos of being ‘with woman’ while responding to the ethical imperative to provide inclusive care in an increasingly diverse society. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight practising midwives in Western Australia, generating rich descriptions of how inclusive language is enacted, negotiated, and constrained in practice. Reflexive thematic analysis produced three overarching …
