“What We Say Matters”: Reducing Drug Use Stigmatization By Healthcare Professionals Through A Narrative-Based Awareness Campaign, Adam M. Traugott
“What We Say Matters”: Reducing Drug Use Stigmatization By Healthcare Professionals Through A Narrative-Based Awareness Campaign, Adam M. Traugott
DNP Projects
Background: Stigma towards substance use has been identified as a contributor to poor care and health outcomes amongst people who use drugs (PWUD), a vulnerable population. Healthcare worker stigma negatively affects the outcomes of individual patients and may have greater public health implications. Methods of addressing drug-use stigma have previously been implemented in a variety of clinical settings. Presenting the lived experience of PWUD to healthcare workers via emotionally compelling narratives has been found to be an effective means of stigma reduction.
Purpose: This study utilized two psychometrically validated tools to measure (1) the baseline prevalence of drug use stigma …

Dysbiosis and impaired gut barrier integrity contribute to chronic immune activation associated with both obesity and HIV infection. Given the increased incidence of obesity in people living with HIV, we explored the impact of obesity on the gut microbiome and microbial translocation (MT) biomarkers during HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART). Lean and obese rhesus macaques were infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and subsequently treated with ART. Obese animals exhibited higher initial MT and inflammation biomarkers that remained constant throughout the study, while lean animals exhibited significant increases in these biomarkers that approached levels observed in obese animals. Lean …

A Care Expansion Initiative: Providing Awareness And Access To Resources For Patients With Celiac Disease: A Quality Improvement Project, Jennifer Kumin
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Celiac disease (CD) is projected to be the most common genetic autoimmune disease in the world with 1% or 3 million people effected in the United States. It is estimated that as many as 70% of those effected are not aware. Diagnosis routinely takes 10-12 years from the initial onset of symptoms, exposing patients and the healthcare system to significant cost and stress through excess testing and misdiagnosis. One area that is often referenced in barriers around celiac disease is the lack of awareness and education specifically with patients, healthcare providers, and the community at large.

Critical Incident Debriefing: Impact On Oncology Nurses And The Infusion-Related Reaction Care Bundle, Megan A. Corbett
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: A critical incident is a sudden, unexpected, emotionally distressing event commonly experienced by oncology nurses. Debriefing is an evidence-based best practice that facilitates communication, reflection, and learning to identify quality improvement opportunities to enhance clinical practice, patient safety, and quality of care. However, debriefing within oncology care settings is inconsistent despite the demonstrated benefit and availability of frameworks. Infusion-related reaction management follows an algorithm that directs care delivery, aligning with a care bundle approach. Care bundles, when consistently and reliably applied, help identify connections between the critical incident (i.e., infusion-related reaction) and opportunities for improvement to ensure clinicians follow …

Sci Peer Mentoring & Community Engagement: A Review, Caitlyn Menard
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Each year, about 250,000 to 500,000 individuals sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting in decreased social participation and diminished societal engagement. This diminished quality of life hinders a person’s ability to fulfill societal roles (Beauchamp et al., 2016). Sustaining an SCI leads to a loss of performance skills and restricts the ability to participate in meaningful activities as one could prior to the injury (Beauchamp et al., 2016). The current standard of care indicates that individuals with an SCI engage in rehabilitation services and receive training from skilled clinicians and peers living with an SCI. Community-dwelling individuals with SCI …
