Dermatologic infections, particularly fungal and viral, are globally prevalent and often lead patients to seek complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). This review critically evaluates 17 studies investigating CAM efficacy in treating dermatologic infectious diseases, focusing on those evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Tea tree oil shows modest benefit for fungal infections such as tinea pedis and onychomycosis, though studies are limited by poor blinding and dropout rates. For herpes simplex virus (HSV), propolis and Melissa officinalis demonstrate potential antiviral effects, but findings are limited by subjective outcomes and industry sponsorship. Introduction: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a global health concern. Reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is critical in ASCVD prevention and treatment. Inclisiran, a novel RNA therapeutic agent, offers a promising solution by lowering LDL-C with twice-yearly dosing after an initial and 3-month dose. The study objective was to evaluate adherence to inclisiran and its lipid-lowering effectiveness over a year of treatment.

Background: Black women in the US face higher cervical cancer mortality rates due to delayed diagnoses linked to lower screening rates. Contributing factors include provider bias, costs, and limited access, particularly affecting women aged 40-64. While innovative approaches like clinical and home-based HPV self-collection exist, equitable dissemination remains challenging. Distributing HPV self-collection kits in unconventional sites like hair salons may offer a solution. Understanding sex differences in the adolescent brain is crucial, as they relate to sex-specific neurological and psychiatric conditions. Predicting sex from adolescent brain data may reveal how these differences influence neurodevelopment. Recently, attention has shifted toward socially-identified gender (distinct from sex assigned at birth) recognizing its explanatory power. This study evaluates whether resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), cortical thickness, or cortical volume better predicts sex and sex/gender alignment (congruence between sex and gender) in preadolescents. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to characterize contemporary surgical management practices and factors influencing surgical decision-making in the management of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) across pediatric epilepsy centers in the United States.

METHODS: A 45-item cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium centers. Domains included institutional demographics, surgical evaluation timing and goals, presurgical workup, procedural utilization and outcomes, and barriers to surgery. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were performed.

RESULTS: Thirty-two pediatric epilepsy centers participated (38% response), the majority comprising pediatric epileptologists at Level 4 National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Most centers (66%) considered surgery …

Cancer metastasis is governed by physical cues at the cell-matrix interface, with matrix stiffness, ligand density, and topography established as key determinants. Here, a fourth critical factor in cancer metastasis, the architecture of the cell-surface glycocalyx is identified. Using MUC15 as a representative small glycoprotein, mathematical modeling and domain truncation experiments are combined to show that glycoprotein size distribution governs integrin adhesion states and metastatic outcomes. MUC15 localizes to focal adhesions and interact with integrins, while larger glycoproteins such as MUC1 are sterically excluded. These physical effects, rather than intracellular signaling, dictate adhesion state transitions: removing MUC15's ectodomain eliminated its …

Despite their importance for brain function, cortico-subcortical white matter tracts are under-represented in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging tractography studies. Their non-invasive mapping is more challenging and less explored compared to other major cortico-cortical bundles. We introduce a set of standardised tractography protocols for delineating tracts between the cortex and various deep subcortical structures, including the caudate, putamen, amygdala, thalamus, and hippocampus. To enable comparative studies, our protocols are designed for both human and macaque brains. We demonstrate how tractography reconstructions follow topographical principles obtained from tracers in the macaque and how these translate to humans. We show that the proposed …

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a relatively rare but debilitating diagnosis in the pediatric population, and patients with end-stage HCM require heart transplantation. Here, we have examined the transcriptome in ventricular tissue from this patient group to identify cell states and underlying cellular processes unique to pediatric HCM.

Methods: We performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) on explanted hearts at transplant in 3 pediatric patients with end-stage HCM and compared findings to pediatric control and adult HCM.

Background and aim: Childhood trauma is a key risk factor for mood disorders and is associated with greater clinical severity, while resilience may act as a protective factor. This study investigates how childhood trauma and resilience interact to shape psychopathology and treatment response in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD).

Methods: The study included 669 participants: 569 patients (380 MDD, 189 BD) and 100 healthy controls (HC). Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) associated pulmonary hypertension (PH) or BPD-PH is a lung disease of infants with significant morbidity. Adrenomedullin (Adm) is an angiogenic peptide that signals through calcitonin receptor-like receptor (Calcrl) and receptor activity modifying protein 2 (RAMP2). Adm deficiency potentiates hyperoxia-induced experimental BPD-PH in mice; however, whether Adm overexpression can mitigate this lung disease is unclear. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause severe illness, but little is known about long-term consequences in hospitalized adults. We surveyed adults (>18 years of age) who survived hospitalization for RSV or COVID-19 during February 2022-September 2023 about physical functioning and quality of life; surveys were conducted 6-12 months after hospitalization. We compared outcomes after RSV hospitalization by age (< 60 vs. >60 years) and to those hospitalized for COVID-19 by using multivariable regression models. Among 146 adults hospitalized with RSV, 27.4% reported severe breathlessness and 21.9% poor quality of life at follow-up. Few differences were seen in posthospital illness by age. …

Caveolin (CAV) 1 and 2 are integral membrane proteins that constitute major components of small membrane pouches termed caveolae. While several functions have been described in other tissues, the roles of CAV1 and CAV2 in the ocular surface have remained unknown. In the current study, we investigated the expression and function of CAV1 and CAV2 in the human cornea. Purpose: There is a consistent link between perfectionism and compulsive exercise, and both are implicated in the maintenance of eating disorders, however no meta-analysis to date has quantified this relationship. We hypothesised that there would be significant, small-moderate pooled correlations between perfectionism dimensions and compulsive exercise. Methods: Published, peer-reviewed articles with standardised measures of perfectionism and the Compulsive Exercise Test were included. There were 7 studies included (N = 3117 participants, M age = 21.78 years, 49% female). Background: This study determined the feasibility, acceptability, engagement and efficacy of a co-designed and personalised digital intervention to increase vegetable intake (Veg4Me) in young (18-to-35 years) rural-dwelling Australian adults. Methods: Participants living in rural Australia were recruited via local government networks and social media and randomised to receive 12-weeks’ access to personalised (intervention) or non-personalised (control) versions of the free Veg4Me web application. Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is endemic worldwide. It is often acquired in childhood and persists throughout adult life. CMV is linked with several diseases of aging, but associations with cognitive performance are not consistent. Here we address whether this may reflect a dependence on putative genetic determinants, Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 and Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF), and/or the age of the subjects tested.
