Introduction: The rural aging population in Michigan struggles to access medical care often available only at significant distances due to limited health system resources and provider shortages. Access to routine care is challenged by lack of non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT). The Iosco County Commission on Aging provides home-delivered meals to eligible county residents. The Rural Health Group investigated the needs of home-delivered meal recipients (aged ≥60 years) for healthcare transportation access. Utilizing data from this investigation, we examined if medical care needs were hindered by problems with transportation in rural Iosco County, Michigan.

Background: The Public Health Nursing (PHN) Section of the Michigan Public Health Association (MPHA) works to improve public health and public health nursing practice in Michigan. In 2021, the PHN Section initiated virtual book discussions to engage public health professionals in meaningful discussion about topics of critical importance to public health and public health nursing; provide continuing education contact hours; and recruit new section members. Methods: The discussions are conducted virtually four times per year. A moderator introduces each book and leads the one-hour discussion. Introduction: Children in the United States face declining physical activity, poor nutrition, and increasing mental health concerns. As school time for wellness declines, out-of-school programs offer an alternative to promote healthy habits to students. A community-driven, multi-component after-school wellness camp was developed in response to a small-town needs assessment and implemented at a local elementary school to determine whether it would change participants’ beliefs held towards healthy habits.

Michigan’s Direct Access Provision of 2015 (Enrolled Senate Bill No. 690, 201), which aimed to increase patient access to physical therapy and reduce waiting times, has created hurdles for patient access and for physical therapy as an autonomous profession. Food insecurity is a persistent public health concern among college students that has been associated with student’s academic and mental health outcomes. This thesis examined the associations between food insecurity, academic performance (measured by GPA) and mental health (using Kessler 6 psychological distress and self-perceived mental health impacts on academic performance), among full-time undergraduate students within the California State University (CSU) system. Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from the Spring 2021 CSU National College Health Assessment, administered across all 23 campuses. Background: Implicit biases influence how nurses perceive and interact with patients and shape clinical practice. Awareness is crucial because implicit biases are difficult to detect. Our study evaluated how educational sessions impacted awareness and understanding of implicit bias. In our study, we sought to mitigate effects of these biases on patient care to promote equitable healthcare outcomes.

Introduction: Fetal death (FD) affects one in 10 women worldwide and is associated with negative sequelae such as complicated grief. The negative effects of FD may potentially be mitigated through provision of bereavement support (BS) by trained healthcare workers.

Introduction: Positional changes may contribute to progression of labor in nulliparous women. We investigated the use of non-invasive, non-pharmacological interventions during the first stage of labor in nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) women at a community hospital in the U.S. Another aim was to compare the times from the first intervention to completion of the first stage of labor across three interventions.

Methods: Ours was a descriptive, retrospective study of 98 NTSV women from January to June 2025. Descriptive and inferential statistics were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27.

Dual loyalty dilemmas are conflicts between health care professionals' obligations toward their patients and third-party interests. These conflicts are more common and starker in custodial settings, such as jails and prisons, military detention facilities, immigration detention centers, and involuntary psychiatric institutions. Despite encountering patients in custody, health care professionals (HCPs) in community settings have limited knowledge and training. In this narrative review, we examined dual loyalty conflicts faced by HCPs working in custodial settings and then applied the identified themes to community-based hospitals where HCPs care for patients in custody. Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is used to screen embryos for their genetic likelihood of developing complex conditions and traits. We surveyed 152 U.S. reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists (REIs) on their views of PES. While most respondents (97%) were at least slightly familiar with PES, general approval of PES was low (12%), with the majority expressing disapproval (46%) or uncertainty (42%). A majority (58%) believed risks outweigh benefits, while only 16% felt benefits outweigh risks. Most clinicians (85-77%) were very or extremely concerned about low accuracy, confusion over results, false expectations, and eugenics. Nonetheless, when asked to vote on whether …

Understanding the initial signature of noise-induced auditory damage remains a significant priority. Animal models suggest the cochlear base is particularly vulnerable to noise, raising the possibility that early-stage noise exposure could be linked to basal cochlear dysfunction, even when thresholds at 0.25-8 kHz are normal. To investigate this in humans, we conducted a meta-analysis following a systematic review, examining the association between noise exposure and hearing in frequencies from 9 to 20 kHz as a marker for basal cochlear dysfunction. Introduction: Evidence supports a healthy diet for secondary stroke prevention; however, programs to implement nutrition education remain inconsistent. This study assessed the feasibility and efficacy of using a multisensory approach called the “Hands-on Training” program (HOT) to improve healthy diet adherence among patients rehabilitating after stroke.

Methods: This pilot randomized controlled study was conducted at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Introduction: Acute skin failure (ASF) in hospitalized patients is a growing concern and a product of multisystem organ failure. Unlike hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs), ASF is not preventable despite prevention measures. Introduction: COVID-19 had a profound impact on cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment worldwide. The purpose of this study was to examine the role that the COVID-19 pandemic had on delays in breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and other related variables, including cancer staging and oncology measures of performance (ECOG Performance Status), in the inpatient and ambulatory oncology settings.

Methods: This was a multi-site, interdisciplinary retrospective review study including 1,514 participants. Four cancer centers collaborated, submitting de-identified data in accordance with their policies and procedures.

Results: Our study's results showed significantly higher delays in screening mammogram appointments (p < .001) during the COVID-19 pandemic (N=142) than before the COVID-19 pandemic (N=56), with a 52% higher likelihood of canceling screening mammogram appointments during COVID-19. Our findings also revealed a statistically significant difference (p < .001) in the time from diagnosis to the first recommended treatment for scheduled initially appointments, with an increase of 18 days, suggesting delays in cancer treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction Internal medicine training has historically relied on classroom-based lectures, typically delivered through morning and noon conferences, which offer broad content coverage but limited experiential learning. Simulation-based education improves resident confidence, procedural ability, and clinical reasoning; yet it is often delivered in brief, standalone activities that lack longitudinal structure or integration within the broader curriculum. Few programs have a longitudinal simulation curriculum that spans the academic year and incorporates multiple modalities and topics. Introduction

Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has emerged as a promising new treatment for patients with chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH). Its efficacy, however, upon the subtype with a high rate of recurrence—septated cSDH—remains undetermined.

Methods

From our prospective registry of patients with cSDH treated with MMAE, we classified patients based on the presence or absence of septations. The primary outcome was the rate of recurrence of cSDH. Secondary outcomes included a reduction in cSDH thickness, midline shift, and rate of reoperation.

Results

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for inadequately vaccinated adults aged 27–45 based on shared clinical decision-making (SCDM). However, little is known about awareness and barriers to SCDM among US healthcare providers (HCPs), especially in Texas, where HPV vaccination rates are below the national average. Between January and April 2021, we conducted a population-based cross-sectional survey (12% response rate) of HCPs licensed in Texas to assess the prevalence and factors associated with awareness of the SCDM recommendation. Prediabetes is one of the main health concerns in public health, and various etiological factors contribute to its onset. This study aimed to evaluate genetic associations and gene‐macronutrient interaction with prediabetes‐related metabolites to understand how genetic variation and dietary intake contribute to dysglycemia. We analyzed a total of 482 self‐identified Mexican American participants recruited from Starr County, Texas in 2018‐2019. Untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed using LC‐MS. Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by a cytosine-adenine-guanine trinucleotide repeat expansion in the huntingtin (HTT) gene. The symptoms of HD include severe motor dysfunction, cognitive issues, and emotional dysregulation. These combined issues are not only debilitating but also lead to depression/anxiety, increased suicide rates, and caregiver burnout. Our narrative review summarizes several recent studies examining the efficacy and differences among emerging treatment strategies for HD. Background: Previously considered a rare opportunistic pathogen, Serratia is now an emerging cause of bacteremia. We compared the risk factors and outcomes of patients with Serratia bacteremia relative to other Enterobacterales in a cohort of hospitalized patients.

Methods: Patients were prospectively enrolled from 2002-2021 at Duke University. Characteristics and outcomes were compared among bacteremic patients due to Serratia and other Enterobacterales. Regression models were used to determine features associated with outcomes. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed to characterize the phylogenetic diversity of Serratia isolates associated with device infections.

Background: Over half of the people with dementia visit the emergency department (ED) each year. Little is known about how people with dementia and their care partners conceptualize or communicate about health outcome goals or care preferences during acute care episodes.

Participants and setting: We conducted interviews with 14 Hispanic people with dementia and 19 care partners recruited from a public safety net hospital system in the southeastern United States. Participants were community-dwelling and had recently visited the ED.
