Improving The Rates Of Sexually Transmitted Infection Diagnosis By Increasing Provider Knowledge About Testing, Lauren Cunningham
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
There has been a significant increase in sexually transmitted infection rates since 2021. Though this issue is nationwide, rural providers require education regarding testing, screening, and transmission of disease processes. The infections with the most significant increase being gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. The purpose of this project was to provide education to providers regarding local statistics, in addition to when to and not to test for sexually transmitted infections. Education was given to three Advance Practice Nurse Practitioners on disease signs and symptoms, transmission, and local STI statistic rates. STI testing rates were observed three months prior to an educational …

Approximately 1.6 million people in the U.S. have lower limb amputations, which is expected to double by 2050 (Wong et al.). Socio-economic factors: income, education, rural residency & race, impact amputation risk (Okesina et al.), with Black Americans 70% are more likely to undergo major lower limb amputations than white Americans, even after adjusting for care access & comorbidities (Feinglass et al., Holman et al., Regenbogen et al.). Within 5 years, up to 50% of first-time amputees require another amputation (Dilingham et al., Glaser et al.) & those with comorbidities face a 77% five-year mortality rate (Fortington et al.).

Nursing has historically been associated with the spiritual. Referred to “anamcara,” a soul friend in Celtic writings (Groves & Klauser, 2005), nurses accompany those in need, and the ill, from birth to end-of-life. The purpose of this project was to increase awareness of nurses in the identification of patients’ Spiritual Distress, a NANDA diagnosis.

- ECMO is commonly used as a bridge to heart transplantation in critically ill patients.
- Additional MCS devices (e.g., Impella, IABP) may be used alongside ECMO to enhance cardiac output.
- The effect of dual circulatory support vs. ECMO alone on post-transplant survival is unclear especially after 2018, when the heart allocation system was revised to reduce waitlist times for MCS patients.

This study investigates the determinants and implications of the implementation of performance-based budgeting (PBB) on public health care service delivery at the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) in Windhoek, Namibia. Using a cross-sectional survey research design targeting 100 respondents, this study employed a quantitative research approach involving MoHSS's budgeting and health care services departments. Data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Communication, bureaucratic structures, and implementers’ disposition significantly influenced PBB implementation alignment, thereby enhancing service delivery. However, resource utilisation showed no significant effect. Additionally, implementation alignment effectively mediated the relationship between latent exogenous variables and …
Proposed Method For Analyzing Cognitive Effects Of Chiari Malformation Type I And The Progression Following Cerebral Tonsil Reduction, Isabella Gleason
Proposed Method For Analyzing Cognitive Effects Of Chiari Malformation Type I And The Progression Following Cerebral Tonsil Reduction, Isabella Gleason
Selected Honors Theses
Chiari Malformation Type I (CM-I) is a neurological condition characterized by the descent of cerebellar structures through the foramen magnum. This malformation can be associated with cognitive implications, including impaired executive functioning, slowed processing speed, memory deficits, difficulties with attention and concentration, irregularities in emotional processing, and challenges in communication and fluency. Research indicates that cognitive dysfunction is prevalent in CM-I patients, affecting their daily lives. There are two surgical treatments commonly recommended for CM-I: posterior fossa decompression (PFD) and cerebral tonsil reduction (CTR). While both interventions are supported in the literature, studies on their long-term effects and effectiveness remain …

Every dentist should know by now that any personal information that can be used to identify someone in New York State cannot just be thrown out with the trash. Unless, of course, it is destroyed properly. Although many dentists’ offices are moving toward electronic recordkeeping, some still rely on paper charts or a hybrid. For offices that use paper, there are state laws and federal HIPAA requirements that address what needs to be done during disposal.

Affordable Acoustic Solutions: Enhancing Accessibility Through Sustainable Soundproofing Materials, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
The prohibitive cost of traditional soundproofing materials, such as Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) and acoustic mineral wool, often limits their accessibility for smaller studios, community spaces, and individual users. This review investigates the potential of sustainable, low-cost materials to offer an alternative without compromising acoustic quality. Magnetic sound dampeners, recycled wool, egg cartons, and bottle caps, for example, provide effective sound management at a fraction of the cost of commercial products. By focusing on upcycled and readily available materials, this study presents strategies to reduce the financial barriers to soundproofing. It also examines the effectiveness of these alternatives in spaces …

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
We discuss the Irreversible k-conversion process for graphs, where a vertex becomes saturated and remains saturated indefinitely if at least k of its neighbors are saturated. We investigate sets S0, which when initially saturated, lead to complete graph saturation. We are interested in the minimum |S0| = Ck(G), called the k-threshold number. We consider the construction of the Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Additionally, we extend our analysis by defining and exploring Double Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Then we incorporate …

MSc in Advanced Practice Midwifery
Background: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) refers to blood loss ≥500mls after vaginal birth and ≥1000mls after cesarean section. PPH is of concern in low and middle-income countries and is estimated to cause maternal mortality every 10 minutes, with a prevalence of 25% and 34% in Uganda and Kenya, respectively. Despite efforts to address this issue, the prevalence of PPH remains high and is associated with maternal and fetal risk factors that can present along the continuum of birth. Understanding the risk factors is necessary in designing appropriate interventions for their prevention.
Objective: To determine the prevalence, maternal and fetal risk factors …

Improving The Oral Pathology Referral Process In An Academic Dental Institution, Gregory Olson
Translational Projects (Open Access)
Introduction: Inefficiencies in the oral cancer referral process pose serious risks, including delayed diagnoses and poor patient outcomes. This project aimed to improve the reliability and efficiency of referrals between dental students and oral pathology residents for patients with suspected oral cancer. Although early detection is widely acknowledged as critical, significant process breakdowns were identified, including the absence of a standardized workflow, inconsistent follow-up practices, and a lack of accountability and tracking mechanisms. As a result, approximately half of the patients recommended for biopsy did not undergo the procedure, leading to delayed diagnoses and potentially worse prognoses.
