A School-Based Asthma Initiative To Improve Student Self-Management Behaviors, Jenni R. Newland
A School-Based Asthma Initiative To Improve Student Self-Management Behaviors, Jenni R. Newland
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Problem: In a Midwest public school system, students received robust academic education. Health education programs, specifically asthma management, were not offered. Over 400 elementary students with asthma lacked the knowledge and skills to effectively recognize and manage their asthma symptoms resulting in increased school clinic visits and absences, highlighting the urgent need for targeted intervention.
Aim of the Project: The aim of this project was to improve students’ asthma self-management skills by providing education based on the Open Airways for Schools (OAS) curriculum. Improving asthma self-management skills reduces student absences and time away from the classroom.

Reducing Patient Falls In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Mariah De Los Santos
Reducing Patient Falls In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Mariah De Los Santos
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Falls in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) pose a significant safety risk, causing injuries, extended stays, and increased morbidity mortality. With a fall rate 6.08 per 1,000 patient bed days, exceeding the national benchmark of 5.3, this project aimed to reduce falls using an evidence-based prevention bundle in a facility lacking a comprehensive fall prevention program. A literature review indicated multifaceted fall prevention bundles reduce falls in SNFs. Key components include risk assessment tools, patient education, post-fall huddles, and purposeful hourly rounding. This quality improvement project used Deming's Model for Improvement and the OhioHealth Change Management Model. An interprofessional team of …

Pre-specified and post hoc analyses …
Social-Ecological Determinants Of Affective States Among College Students: A Cross-Cultural Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Abhishek Aggarwal
Social-Ecological Determinants Of Affective States Among College Students: A Cross-Cultural Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Abhishek Aggarwal
Theses and Dissertations
Background: College students experience a complex and diverse array of stressors during their college life, making them vulnerable to severe mental health issues. Momentary affective states are linked to major mental health disorders and overall well-being; however, the current social-ecological model of affect lacks a temporal dimension, failing to account for within-person dynamics of affective states over time. This study disentangles the complex temporal dynamics among the momentary, multilevel social-ecological factors and affective states in the real-world setting of college students across the United States (US) and India. However, establishing invariance of the affect model across time, people, and cultures …

Tech Note 2024-1 A Novel Framework To Estimate Social And Private Value Created Through Commercialization Of A Pharmaceutical Product, Paula Chaves De Silva, Fred D. Ledley
CISI Publication
This framework posits that the value created by a new medicine is embodied in the total health value (health benefit) provided to those using the products. This value is then distributed between social value and private value by the price paid for the product and how these revenues are expensed for different purposes. In this framework, the social value created includes the residual health value (net price paid) along with the scientific value, jobs creation, and social payments to public sector organizations. The private value created includes shareholder value (change in market capitalization plus cash distributions to shareholders) as well …
Optimization Of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells For The Treatment Of Solid Tumors, Hailey Young, Ms
Optimization Of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells For The Treatment Of Solid Tumors, Hailey Young, Ms
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
T cells have been called the “warriors of the immune system” and for good reason. T cells have many different functions including stimulating B cells to make antibodies; suppressing the immune response when it is no longer needed; killing of foreign, pathogenic, and cancerous cells and several other functions. Despite these key immune system functions, T cells sometimes are deregulated, and this can lead to an increased risk of cancer. Therefore, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have been designed. CAR T cells are T cells that have been genetically engineered to possess a T cell receptor derived from murine, …

Maggot Therapy And Its Clinical Application In The War Against Microbial Resistance, Nicholas Leidy, Ms
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Antibiotic resistance poses a growing threat across the globe. The United Nations estimates that up to 10 million deaths by 2050 will be due to superbugs and antimicrobial resistance. Finding effective solutions has been obstructed by the expensive and time-intensive research and development process. Maggot therapy, however, has emerged as a promising, cost-effective approach to wound debridement or cleaning. This unconventional method takes advantage of the natural capabilities of maggots to effectively debride chronic, non-healing wounds, even those infected with multidrug-resistant bacteria. Through the utilization of proteolytic and digestive enzymes, maggots are able to break down necrotic tissue and promote …
An Exploration Of Misophonia In The Literature, Megan E. Singer
An Exploration Of Misophonia In The Literature, Megan E. Singer
Honors Projects
Misophonia is a disorder that elicits an extreme negative reaction to specific auditory and visual stimuli. Triggering stimuli, which are often human produced, provoke an array of symptoms including heightened negative emotions along with autonomic nervous system responses. Despite being a relatively common disorder, misophonia is still inadequately recognized and is often classified under conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety. No cure for misophonia currently exists, but there are many treatments and coping mechanisms used by people with misophonia to ease their symptoms. This comprehensive review synthesizes current research on misophonia, exploring underlying mechanisms, comorbidities, diagnostic methodologies, and treatment …

Stratified medicine holds great promise to tailor treatment to the needs of individual patients. While genetics holds great potential to aid patient stratification, it remains a major challenge to operationalize complex genetic risk factor profiles to deconstruct clinical heterogeneity. Contemporary approaches to this problem rely on polygenic risk scores (PRS), which provide only limited clinical utility and lack a clear biological foundation. To overcome these limitations, we develop the CASTom-iGEx approach to stratify individuals based on the aggregated impact of their genetic risk factor profiles on tissue specific gene expression levels. The paradigmatic application of this approach to coronary artery …

Can Nutrition Education Reduce Division Iii Female Athlete's Risk Of Developing Low Energy Availability, Coby Stover
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
Context: Low Energy availability (LEA) is widely acknowledged as a state in which an individual does not have sufficient energy to support normal functions within the body after energy has been expended through exercise. In sports environments, athletes can exhibit LEA for a variety of reasons. These reasons range from improper food intake to effectively fuel and re-fuel their body for the energy demands of their specific sport, to eating disorders (ED) and eating disorder behaviors. Access to appropriate nutrition knowledge is also a major factor that can place athletes at risk for developing LEA. Both males and females …

Fibrillin microfibrils play a critical role in the formation of elastic fibers, tissue/organ development, and cardiopulmonary function. These microfibrils not only provide structural support and flexibility to tissues, but they also regulate growth factor signaling through a plethora of microfibril-binding proteins in the extracellular space. Mutations in fibrillins are associated with human diseases affecting cardiovascular, pulmonary, skeletal, and ocular systems. Fibrillins consist of up to 47 epidermal growth factor-like repeats, of which more than half are modified by protein O-glucosyltransferase 2 (POGLUT2) and/or POGLUT3. Loss of these modifications reduces secretion of N-terminal fibrillin constructs overexpressed in vitro. Here, we investigated …

IL2 signals pleiotropically on diverse cell types, some of which contribute to therapeutic activity against tumors, whereas others drive undesired activity, such as immunosuppression or toxicity. We explored the theory that targeting of IL2 to CD8+ T cells, which are key antitumor effectors, could enhance its therapeutic index. To this aim, we developed AB248, a CD8 cis-targeted IL2 that demonstrates over 500-fold preference for CD8+ T cells over natural killer and regulatory T cells (Tregs), which may contribute to toxicity and immunosuppression, respectively. AB248 recapitulated IL2's effects on CD8+ T cells in vitro and induced selective expansion of CD8+T cells …

BACKGROUND: Myeloid neoplasms account for 50% of cases of pediatric leukemias in infants. Approximately 25%-50% of patients with newborn leukemia have cutaneous extramedullary disease (EMD). In less than 10% of patients, aleukemic leukemia cutis or isolated extramedullary disease with cutaneous involvement (cEMD) occurs when skin lesions appear prior to bone marrow involvement and systemic symptoms. Interestingly, in acute myeloid leukemia with cutaneous EMD (AML-cEMD) and cEMD, spontaneous remissions have been reported.
METHOD: This is a multicentric retrospective cohort study aiming to describe characteristics, treatment, and outcome of infants with either cEMD or presence of cutaneous disease with involvement of the …

A Qualitative Study Exploring The Management & Implications Of Power Differentials Experienced By Pre-Licensed Supervisees In Clinical Supervision Settings, Joyti Jariwala
Dissertations
The focus in this qualitative study was to explore how power differentials in supervision create positive and negative experiences between licensed psychologists and pre-licensed doctoral students. The study results provide insight into how supervisees navigate these dynamics during supervision, which typically involves experiential learning environments in which trainees discuss progress, receive feedback, and enhance their skills. The theoretical framework grounding the study was social learning theory, which is based on the idea that individuals learn from modeling, observation, and imitation in a social context (Bandura, 1986). Reflexive thematic analysis was used to recognize similarities in findings gathered via two sets …

Type-2 diabetes raises the risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-type dementia and the conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, yet mechanisms connecting type-2 diabetes to AD remain largely unknown. Amylin, a pancreatic 𝜷-cell hormone co-secreted with insulin, participates in the central regulation of satiation, but also forms pancreatic amyloid in persons with type-2 diabetes and synergistically interacts with brain amyloid 𝜷 (A𝜷) pathology, in both sporadic and familial Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Growing evidence from studies of tumor growth, together with early observations in skeletal muscle, indicates amylin as a potential trigger of cellular metabolic reprogramming. Because the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, …

African Americans experience higher incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, they continue to be underrepresented in AD research, limiting the ability to generalize findings to the increasingly diverse US population. To reduce AD disparities, targeted efforts are needed to increase the representation of African Americans in AD research. This mini review identified evidence-based strategies that increased research participation among older African Americans. Four recruitment strategies emerged from eight published peer-reviewed studies that directly evaluated the effectiveness of strategies aimed at increasing the number of African American participants in Alzheimer's research. The strategies include community outreach and education, face-to-face …

IMPORTANCE: Buprenorphine is an effective yet underused treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility (acceptability, tolerability, and safety) of 7-day injectable extended-release buprenorphine in patients with minimal to mild opioid withdrawal.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nonrandomized trial comprising 4 emergency departments in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Pacific geographic areas of the US included adults aged 18 years or older with moderate to severe OUD and Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (COWS) scores less than 8 (minimal to mild), in which scores range from 0 to 7, with higher scores indicating increasing withdrawal. Exclusion criteria included methadone-positive …
