Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Curcumin is widely recognized for its various pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activities. Nevertheless, the development of curcumin as a therapeutic agent is impeded by its limited oral bioavailability, which stems from its chemical instability, poor aqueous solubility, and rapid degradation. This study aimed to develop granule formulations incorporating hyaluronic acid graft poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) or HA-g-pNIPAM to enhance dissolution and protect curcumin from degradation. Three formulations were developed: F10 (HA-g-pNIPAM physically mixed with curcumin), F10 Encap (curcumin encapsulated within HA-g-pNIPAM), and F11 (curcumin granules without HA-g-pNIPAM). The stability results showed that F10 Encap effectively maintained curcumin content throughout the …

The Effect Of Artogomezianone On Apoptosis Induction In Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, Worawich Somboonvoravong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
NSCLC severity is driven by dysregulation of the EGFR/PI3K/Akt pathway, promoting tumor growth and drug resistance. Hyperactive EGFR/PI3K/Akt signaling results in aggressive tumors and poor outcomes, further worsened by resistance to EGFR inhibitors. Targeting this pathway could inhibit tumor growth and resistance. artogomezianone, a compound derived from Artocarpus gomezianus, has shown considerable anti-cancer efficacy, mainly by inducing apoptosis and decreasing the proliferation of several cancers. This study investigated artogomezianone’s effects on the EGFR/PI3K/Akt pathway. Cytotoxic and apoptotic effects were assessed using MTT assay and Hoechst 33342/PI double staining, with confirmation by Western blot analysis. Protein levels and binding affinity were …

Prehabilitation-Reconditioning Of Teenage Heart Transplant Candidates, Chan Myr, Hui Ww, Chan Ww, Lun Ks
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Progression of Dilated Cardiomyopathy to advanced heart failure necessitates the use of a Left Ventricular Assistive Device (LVAD) as a bridge to heart transplantation (1,8,10). Two teenagers with cardiomyopathy who were on the waiting list for heart transplantation and had LVADs were given a physical training intervention tailored by physiotherapist. This case report reviewed the efficacy of prehabilitation conducted by physiotherapists at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital. After the prehabilitation program both patients demonstrated significant improvements in functional capacity, respiratory effort, and hand strength. Physical training is a promising approach for patients who have undergone heart transplantation.
A Guide To Otoliths Of Minnesota Fishes, Baylor J. Short
A Guide To Otoliths Of Minnesota Fishes, Baylor J. Short
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Investigations into the diet patterns of piscivores can provide crucial information on predator-prey relationships, population dynamics, and responses to changing ecosystems. However, digestive processes often remove or alter physical characteristics that are traditionally used to identify consumed fish. This problem has been addressed to some degree with advances in molecular technologies, although these methods can be costly and require specific training and equipment to do so. In contrast, bony structures such as otoliths, vertebrae, cleithra, and others frequently have morphologies that are unique among families, genera, and species. Because these structures are resistant to digestion, they can be used to …

Role Of Edaravone Nanosuspension In Preterm Labor And Birth Outcomes, Sruthi Sarvepalli
Theses and Dissertations
Annually, preterm birth (PTB) affects fifteen million infants, posing a significant risk of infant mortality and lifelong disability. Among various triggers, it is well-established that infection-associated oxidative stress and inflammation can induce preterm labor. There is no FDA approved medication for the prevention of PTB except tocolytics which provide marginal benefit at a later stage. Scarcity of therapeutic intervention and unmet medical need propelled us in investigating a novel drug molecule. Our current research is focused on investigating the potential of Edaravone (EDA), an FDA-approved antioxidant and anti-inflammatory medication, in delaying preterm labor and improving neonatal outcomes. Our goal is …

Multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) is widely used for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis. Deep learning models show good performance in detecting PCa on mpMRI, but domain-specific PCa-related anatomical information is sometimes overlooked and not fully explored even by state-of-the-art deep learning models, causing potential suboptimal performances in PCa detection. Symmetric-related anatomical information is commonly used when distinguishing PCa lesions from other visually similar but benign prostate tissue. In addition, different combinations of mpMRI findings are used for evaluating the aggressiveness of PCa for abnormal findings allocated in different prostate zones. In this study, we investigate these domain-specific anatomical properties in PCa diagnosis …
Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura Hermer
Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura Hermer
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article argues that intent should govern legal parenthood, regardless of the method of conception, the person’s biological or genetic relationship to the resulting embryo/fetus, or the person’s gender. This proposition is not new. This Article adds to scholarly discourse by extending the concept: Intent should not just determine parenthood, but also fetal rights. When a pregnant person establishes their procreational intent (or lack thereof) prior to birth, then both the existence (or lack thereof) of legal protections for the embryo/fetus and the gestator’s rights and duties (or lack thereof) should flow from this intent. Non-gestating gamete contributors would do …

Monitoring public sentiment via social media is potentially helpful during health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, traditional frequency-based, data-driven neural network-based approaches can miss newly relevant content due to the evolving nature of language in a dynamically evolving environment. Human-curated symbolic knowledge sources, such as lexicons for standard language and slang terms, can potentially elevate social media signals in evolving language. We introduce a neurosymbolic method that integrates neural networks with symbolic knowledge sources, enhancing the detection and interpretation of mental health-related tweets relevant to COVID-19. Our method was evaluated using a corpus of large datasets (approximately 12 …

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
Purpose Our study aimed to examine whether receipt of follow-up care plans is associated with greater guideline-concordant CRC screening stratified by breast, prostate, and lung cancer survivors.
Methods We used data from years 2016, 2018, and 2020 of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System on 3339 eligible treatment-utilizing cancer survivors with complete treatment. We performed descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression to examine the mentioned association.
Results We observed that 83.9% of breast and 88.2% of prostate cancer survivors with follow-care plans received CRC screening (p-value < 0.001). The lowest CRC screening use was observed among lung cancer (70.8%). In multivariable analysis, receipt of follow-up care plans was strongly associated with greater odds of receiving CRC screening in breast (OR, 2.67; 95% CI: 1.71–4.16) and prostate (OR, 3.81; 95% CI: 2.30–6.31) cancer survivors. Regardless of provider type, 84 to 88% reduced likelihood of receipt of CRC screening when they received follow-up care plans among lung cancer survivors. Among those without follow-up care plans, breast (OR, 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09–0.92) and lung (OR, 0.05; 95% CI: 0.01–0.25) cancer survivors who received care from general practices were less likely to receive CRC screening compared to those who received care from non-general practices.
Conclusions Receipt of follow-up care plans was associated with greater CRC screening use in …

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are frequently handled using chemical immobilization in North America for management and research. In a controlled environment, we compared three drug combinations: ketamine-xylazine (KX), butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM), and nalbuphinemedetomidine- azaperone (NalMed-A) for raccoon immobilization. In crossover comparisons, raccoons received a mean of the following: 8.66 mg/kg ketamine and 1.74 mg/kg xylazine (0.104 mL/kg KX); 0.464 mg/kg butorphanol, 0.155 mg/kg azaperone, and 0.185 mg/kg medetomidine (0.017 mL/kg BAM); and 0.800 mg/kg nalbuphine, 0.200 mg/kg azaperone, and 0.200 mg/kg medetomidine (0.020 mL/kg NalMed-A). Induction time was shortest with KX (mean6SE, 10.060.7 min) and longest with NalMed-A (13.061.3 min). …
