Empathy, Ethics, And Empowerment: Supervising The Transpersonal Therapist, John Elfers, Patty Hlava

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This grounded theory study addressed the question What model explains the essential qualities, skills, and competencies of an effective supervisory relationship for transpersonal therapists in training? It emerged out of a recognition that current training models for supervisors were not inclusive of competencies to address the needs of therapist trainees who are oriented toward a transpersonal approach to psychotherapy. The results of 22 interviews with trainees and supervisors surfaced a fundamental tension within the supervisory relationship in the distinction among the primary responsibility of the supervisor for ensuring client welfare, and encouraging supervisees to develop their personal therapeutic orientation …

Psychological Energy: Early Theorists In The Analytical Tradition, Michael Da Jan 2024

Psychological Energy: Early Theorists In The Analytical Tradition, Michael Da

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Since the dawn of Western psychology, theorists have used variations of the term “energy” to describe the dynamic forces at work within the psyche and the soma and the psychotherapeutic processes of change. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, terms used for psychological energy included “libido,” “psychic energy,” “orgone energy,” “bioenergetics,” and “psycho-energetics.” This paper uses philosophical hermeneutics to compare the major theorists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: William James, Pierre Janet, Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, Wilhelm Reich, Alexander Lowen, and Roberto Assagioli. Analysis reveals these theorists generally agreed psychological energy is (a) a …

Background: Previous research has shown a significant link between mental health issues and low academic performance. Our study explores the delicate connection between mental health issues and academic performance in Ohio school children, in particular, how the dynamic may differ between rural and non-rural communities. Methods: We utilized County Health Rankings data from the years 2016 and 2022 from all 88 counties in Ohio, which we further substratified as 44 rural and 44 non-rural counties. From CHR, we chose data categories to represent measures of academic performance, internalizing mental health problems, and access to mental health services, and utilized SPSS …

Concealed Carry Legislation And Firearm-Related Deaths In The United States: Possible Causes And Ramifications, Amelia Liu, Kyle Willette Jan 2024

Concealed Carry Legislation And Firearm-Related Deaths In The United States: Possible Causes And Ramifications, Amelia Liu, Kyle Willette

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Background: Previous research has shown that there is not an association between the legislation of constitutional carry and firearm deaths, but rather it is predominantly associated with socioeconomic status and location. On the national scale, the factors that most significantly affected firearm related deaths, firearm homicides, and firearm suicides were partisan lean, urbanization, and poverty rate over these three categories. Concealed carry legislation was not significantly associated with deaths. Objective: We are looking at whether the passage of constitutional carry laws have impacts on the rates of firearm-related deaths or violent crime across states. Important variables we are considering include …

Interface Between Motivational Interviewing And Burnout, Paul J. Hershberger, Stacy R. Flowers, Sharlo L. Bayless, Katharine Conway, Timothy N. Crawford

Family Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The contemporary challenges of improving patient engagement in chronic disease management and addressing the growing problem of physician burnout are commonly viewed as separate issues. However, there is extensive evidence that person-centered approaches to patient engagement, such as motivational interviewing (MI), are associated both with better outcomes for patients and improved well-being for clinicians.

METHODS: We conducted an exploratory survey study to ascertain whether resident physicians who perceive that they embrace and utilize the MI approach also report less burnout. A total of 318 residents in several specialties were invited via email to complete a 10-question survey about patient …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Background/Objectives: Stool-based tests, such as the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), have been widely used for increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Small media, such as printed materials or flyers, are known to be an effective intervention to increase CRC screening by fecal tests. However, more evidence is needed to determine whether such small media are effective in improving screening uptake of a mailed FIT intervention targeted at rural populations in the USA.

Methods: In this randomized study, 1230 FIT kits were mailed from July to December 2022 to rural Nebraskans aged 45-74 who were not up to date on …

Empowering Caregivers In The Prevention Of Clinical Delirium For At Risk Older Adults Boarding In The Emergency Department Setting, Danielle Brewer Jan 2024

Empowering Caregivers In The Prevention Of Clinical Delirium For At Risk Older Adults Boarding In The Emergency Department Setting, Danielle Brewer

DNP Projects

Background: Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding is a global healthcare crisis documented in the literature for more than a decade, impacting patient outcomes and resource availability. While awaiting delayed transfer to an inpatient room, older adults in the ED remain vulnerable to developing acute delirium. Boarding potentiates the risk for worsening health outcomes, which are further compounded by delirium. Scarcity of resources and time constraints delay delirium detection and increase risk for down-stream hospital-acquired complications, higher cost, and prolonged length of stay. Current ED models do not prioritize caregiver partnership or involvement in delirium-conscious care, which is a holistic approach to …

Increasing Awareness Of Implicit Bias And Systemic Racism Among Clinical Staff Caring For Non-Hispanic Black Maternal Patients, Melissa Courtney

DNP Projects

Background: Kentucky is ranked 17th in the nation for the highest maternal mortality rate in the U.S. with a rate of 22.9 per 100,000, and 78 percent of those maternal deaths were considered preventable. The Non-Hispanic Black maternal death rate in the U.S. and Kentucky is 2.9 times higher than that of the Non-Hispanic White maternal counterparts (Kentucky Department of Public Health Division of Maternal and Child Health (KDPHDMCH), 2022). The fundamental cause of maternal health inequities is structural racism, which leads to poor treatment and experiences in the healthcare system (Chinn et al., 2020). Structural racism and implicit …

Increasing Annual Depression Screening for Adults in a Primary Care Setting

Background:

Depression is a mental illness that's common worldwide, which can cause an individual to function poorly in society and can progress to suicide. Because of several barriers, patients in a primary care environment are not being seen or treated for depression. Even though the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that all adults in primary care receive annual depression screening that delivers effective treatment with the correct diagnosis and accurate follow-up, patients are still not being screened for depression.

Purpose:.

This project aims to improve …
