Human System Composite Performance Measures: General Systems Performance Theory Insights, Lawrence Disalvi Jan 2024

Human System Composite Performance Measures: General Systems Performance Theory Insights, Lawrence Disalvi

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Composite Performance Measures (CPMs) of human performance are widely employed in applications that range from mundane to life-changing, yet they are frequently presented without explanation or reference to theoretical underpinnings. The conceptual soundness of a widely used CPM approach, based on additive combination of constituent components, has been called into question by Kondraske. He argues the relevance of General Systems Performance Theory (GSPT) and performance capacity envelope concepts when applied to multidimensional CPM measures.

To obtain evidence-based answers to assertions regarding CPM types and rationale employed in medical and non-medical contexts, a Systematic Descriptive Review was conducted. Separately, the GSPT-based …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

The United States is a nation marked by its growing diversity, with ethnically marginalized groups constituting 31% of the population in 2000, 37% in 2012, and projected to reach 50% by 2043 (Carter et al., 2015). In 2018, California had 8,000 registered nurses, with significant ethnic diversity: 40.7% White/Caucasian, 5.5% Black/African American, 11.3% Hispanic/LatinX, 18.7% Filipino, 12.8% Asian/Pacific Islander (excluding Filipino), 3.3% Other, and 7.7% unknown (Spetz et al., 2018). In Los Angeles, the demographics of employed R.N.s were similarly diverse. However, this increase in ethnically marginalized populations presents an ongoing challenge for healthcare organizations, emphasizing the need for sustained …

Pathophysiologic Consequences Of Pericardial Adipose Tissue Assessed By Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Sauyeh K. Zamani

Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive

Obesity is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease; however, the exact mechanism remains incompletely understood. Conventional metrics, like body mass index, fail to represent fat distribution and its impact on health. A growing body of literature suggest differences between subcutaneous and visceral fat in relation to cardiovascular risk. This specificity has also been extended to the fat surrounding the heart, collectively known as pericardial fat, which includes epicardial adipose tissue (EAT)— located between the myocardium and the visceral layer of the pericardium— and paracardial adipose tissue (PAT)—found outside the parietal pericardium in the mediastinum. Importantly, these two depots have distinct …

The Expansion Of Language Interpretation Services Post-Executive Order 13166: Effects On Maternal And Fetal Outcomes Of Non-English-Speaking Patients, Lilly Annabelle Smith

Honors Theses and Capstones

Over 69 million people older than the age of 5 in the U.S. speak a language other than English at home (U.S. Census, 2022). Of this population, around 38% report speaking English less than "very well" or limited English proficiency, “LEP”. Research has shown patient-provider communication quality in healthcare settings to be directly linked to the provider's ability to deliver safe and suitable care for LEP patients (Au et al., 2009). Executive Order (EO) 13166, signed into law in 2000, requires all federal agencies to implement and document language interpretation services in their establishments (Basu et al., 2017). LEP mothers …

Exploring The Metabolic And Mitogenic Potential Of A Hyper-Stable Variant Of Fgf1, Emma Starr, Oshadi Edirisinghe, Thallapuranam Krishnaswamy Suresh Kumar Jan 2024

Exploring The Metabolic And Mitogenic Potential Of A Hyper-Stable Variant Of Fgf1, Emma Starr, Oshadi Edirisinghe, Thallapuranam Krishnaswamy Suresh Kumar

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a family of 22 human cytokines involved in critical cellular processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, metabolism, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis, and wound healing. Among these, fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) possesses a powerful mitogenic potential as it can nonspecifically bind to all four FGF receptors. However, the therapeutic applications of FGF1 are hindered by its inherent thermal and proteolytic instability, especially at physiological temperatures. This is believed to be attributed to the heparin-binding pocket at the C-terminus, which contains numerous positively charged residues that repel each other. To combat this instability, FGF1 binds to a negatively …
