Division of Community Engagement Resources
This resource discusses community-engaged data dissemination processes. It provides information on being able to produce many scholarly outputs in addition to co-creating accessible outputs for the community. The framework describes how to continue partnerships that are mutually beneficial to both the institution and the community. The CONNECT framework addresses community frustrations by transforming data dissemination into a systematic, partnership-driven process that goes beyond data extraction. It enables researchers to align their work more closely with community needs, guiding the next steps in research design, focus, and methodology.

The Supervisors Are Carrying The Bag: The Nurses' Emergency Council, Settlement Houses, And The 1918 Influenza Pandemic In New York City, Eric C. Cimino
History and Political Science: Faculty Publications
This article examines the combined efforts of the Nurses’ Emergency Council (NEC), settlement houses, and the Department of Health during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in New York City. To coordinate public health nursing, the NEC united the settlements and municipal agencies into an umbrella organization that was chaired by Lillian Wald of the Henry Street Settlement. Together, the NEC and the Health Department recruited a corps of nurses to treat influenza patients, primarily in their homes. Historical accounts of the 1918 Pandemic often emphasize the incompetence of American cities in dealing with influenza’s spread. New York’s Health Commissioner Royal Copeland, …

Cognitive behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) is a model of therapy targeting cognitions, emotional responses, and behavioral interactions between couples experiencing relationship distress. Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is a tool that clinicians can use to track the progress of their clients in therapy from the perspective of the client. This study aimed to use MFT-PRN, a type of ROM, to gather client progress throughout CBCT treatment. Prototypical change trajectories were created in Microsoft Excel for examination of presenting problem progress, couple satisfaction, and overall relationship functioning. It was found that small data sensitivity affected the trajectories immensely, though ROM outcomes revealed …

Falls account for >$50 billion of medical spending in 2015 (CDC). Real-time haptic feedback shows promise at reducing static standing COM sway (Meszaros, 2019). Pilot data variability suggests that some haptic-wearers ‘over-correct’ (unnecessarily reducing available degrees of freedom), when haptic correction is perceived as ‘a mistake. Does over-correction reduce multi-segment control and impair sway stability (Hsu, Scholz, et al. 2007)?

Challenging older adults to execute peak effort functional tests is not common. A peak effort test pushes patients to the point of not sustaining the task. The Wingate test is a peak effort test that measures the amount of revolutions per second a participant can perform over 30s. Older adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA) may regulate their effort during the Wingate. Alternatively, high exertion during the Wingate test may yield high value in influencing attitudes related to pain and aging. The purpose of this study was to develop themes of what influences peak effort during the Wingate test in participants …

Archives of Neurosurgery
Background: Neurocytoma is an unusual intracranial neoplasm; it represents 0.1-0.5% of brain neoplasms. The first report of an extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) was published in 1989. Suprasellar neurocytomas are classified as EVN, representing a scarce variant of neurocytoma. There are only 22 cases of sellar neurocytomas reported in the literature, including the present one.
Observations: A 48-year-old woman arrived at the emergency department (ED) with a previously made MRI, which reported a sellar neoplasm. Due to the clinical presentation, location, and image characteristics, the lesion was managed as a pituitary neuroendocrine tumor. The final pathology report established the final diagnosis of …

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of medical device-associated biofilm infections. This is influenced by the ability of S. aureus biofilm to evade the host immune response, which is partially driven by the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10). Here, we show that treatment of human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDMs) with IL-10 enhanced biofilm formation, suggesting that macrophage anti-inflammatory programming likely plays an important role during the transition from planktonic to biofilm growth. To identify S. aureus genes that were important for intracellular survival in HMDMs and how this was affected by IL-10, transposon sequencing was performed. The size of the S. aureus …

Klebsiella pneumoniae (KLP) is a Gram-negative pathogen that can be highly antibiotic-resistant. Our group has worked with gallium-based compounds as a means of treating bacterial infections. Here the possible mechanism is investigated for dual therapy comprised of gallium nitrate (Ga(NO3)3) and gallium protoporphyrin (GaPP) on KLP. It is found that in vitro the combination of Ga(NO3)3 and GaPP is synergistic against KLP. The in vivo efficacy is of the dual therapy is additionally tested by treating pulmonary KLP infections in mice. Much greater effectiveness are observed in bacterial clearance and survival of mice …

Oxacillin (bactericidal) and tetracycline (bacteriostatic) are clinically relevant antibiotics that are routinely prescribed to treat Staphylococcus aureus infections but not conventionally used in combination. There is an urgent need for treatment regimens that can act upon biofilms during infection, associated with chronic infections on indwelling devices, as well as acute planktonic (systemic) infection. Here we show that in an in vitro model oxacillin and tetracycline act synergistically against S. aureus UAMS-1 biofilms, reducing the concentration of both antibiotics necessary to eradicate an established biofilm. Using an in vivo zebrafish larval infection model with S. aureus NewHG, they display improved bacterial …

How Does Plasma L-Fabp Level Correlate With Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease, And Can It Serve As A Reliable Biomarker For Risk Stratification?”, Nehad Refat Ibrahim, Ghadir Elsawy
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects up to 10% of the global adult population, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being a major concern. CKD patients face increased CVD-related morbidity and mortality. While the exact mechanisms linking CKD and CVD are complex, traditional risk factors (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) and nontraditional factors (e.g., inflammation, oxidative stress) play a role. Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) is associated with lipid metabolism and kidney injury. Few studies suggest L-FABP as a potential biomarker for CVD risk in CKD patients, but further research is needed to fully understand its role. This study aims to explore the link between …
