A Case Of Fournier’S Gangrene: A Rare, Lethal Skin Infection, Aditi Chokshi, Laura Ziton
HPD Articles
Fournier’s gangrene (FG) is a rare form of necrotizing fasciitis that is characterized by fascial necrosis of the genitalia or perineum. FG typically results as a complication of genital or anorectal abscess, pressure sore, or surgical site infections. Many patients present with no symptoms, whereas other patients may present with non-specific symptoms such as pain or erythema in the genital or perianal regions. We present a case of FG in a 76-year-old male. Our patient presented initially with only complaints of perianal and groin pain. Upon imaging and skin examination, a diagnosis of Fournier’s gangrene was made. However, due to …

Health Services and Informatics Research
Peer support programs have been utilized for a variety of mental-health-related needs, including suicidality and depression. In this pilot program, we developed a peer support network to address multimorbidity involving intimate partner violence (IPV), suicidal ideation, and depression. Over one year, our Suicide Obviation Support (SOS) navigators enrolled and provided at-elbow support to 108 patients (67.6% women) who screened positive for IPV, many of whom also screened at moderate or high risk for suicidality (64.8%) and/or exhibited depression symptoms. At a 6-month follow-up, 63 participants (58.3%) were retained. Those who stayed enrolled in the program for six months were less …

Individual And Combined Effect Of Eudragit® Rs 100 And Eudragit® Rl 100 On Sustained Release Characteristics Of Ropinirole Hcl-Loaded Microparticles, Aamir Hayyat, Nabeel Siddique
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Ropinirole HCl is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist which is recommended for the treatment of both Parkinson’s disease and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Its half-life is about 6 hours and it is metabolized in the liver primarily by CYP1A2. Its metabolites are water-soluble and rapidly excreted from the body in urine. However, its oral bioavailability is low. Therefore, this current project aimed to produce and evaluate sustained release ropinirole microparticles coated with Eudragit® RS 100 and RL 100 by varying polymer types and concentrations. Ropinirole microparticles were prepared by oil in oil emulsion solvent evaporation technique. Emulsifier concentration was constantly …

Corneal Wound Healing In The Presence Of Antifibrotic Antibody Targeting Collagen Fibrillogenesis: A Pilot Study, Zeba A. Syed, Tatyana Milman, Jolanta Fertala, Andrzej Steplewski, Andrzej Fertala
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Highly organized collagen fibrils interlacing with proteoglycans form the crucial architecture of the cornea and facilitate its transparency. Corneal scarring from accidental injury, surgery, or infection alters this highly organized tissue, causing severe consequences, including blindness. There are no pharmacological or surgical methods to effectively and safely treat excessive corneal scarring. Thus, we tested the anticorneal scarring utility of a rationally designed anticollagen antibody (ACA) whose antifibrotic effects have already been demonstrated in nonocular models. Utilizing a rabbit model with an incisional corneal wound, we analyzed ACA’s effects on forming collagen and proteoglycan-rich extracellular matrices in scar neotissue. We used …

50 Years After The Bunker Hill Mine Fire Caused One Of The Largest Lead-Poisoning Cases In Us History, Idaho’S Silver Valley Is Still At Risk, Martin Schiavenato
Nursing Faculty Scholarship
On Sept. 3, 1973, a fire swept through the baghouse of the Bunker Hill mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. The building was designed to filter pollutants produced by smelting, the melting of rocks that separates metal from its ore. The gases produced in this process carried poisons, including lead.
At the time, the prices of lead and silver were climbing toward all-time highs. Rather than wait for new filters and repairs, company officials kept the mine running. They increased production, bypassed the filtration steps and, for eleven months, dumped noxious gases directly into the surrounding area.
Then, horses …

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Skin: Penetration Into Hair Follicles, Kseniia Konina, Theresa A. Freeman, Mark J. Kushner
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Sterilization of skin prior to surgery is challenged by the reservoir of bacteria that resides in hair follicles. Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have been proposed as a method to treat and deactivate these bacteria as atmospheric plasmas are able to penetrate into structures and crevices with dimensions similar to those found in hair follicles. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of an APPJ sustained in helium flowing into ambient air, and incident onto a layered dielectric similar to human skin in which there are idealized hair follicles. We found that, depending on the location of …

METHODS: We used summary statistics from five GWASs of AD to construct PRSs in 4,189 diverse Hispanics/Latinos (mean age 63 years) from the Study of Latinos-Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA). We assessed the PRS associations with MCI in the combined set of people and in diverse subgroups, and when including and excluding the APOE gene region. We also assessed PRS associations with MCI in an independent dataset from the Mass General Brigham Biobank.
RESULTS: A simple sum of 5 PRSs ("PRSsum"), each constructed based on a …
The Impact Of Vaccinations And Chronic Disease On Covid Death Rates, James L. Doti
The Impact Of Vaccinations And Chronic Disease On Covid Death Rates, James L. Doti
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
This study presents a theoretical and empirical regression model to measure the efficacy of vaccinations in reducing COVID death rates across states over the 3/10/21 to 12/28/22 period. During that period, it was estimated that the availability of vaccinations resulted in a reduction of 427,000 COVID deaths in the nation. To arrive at that estimate, other covariants were held constant. In particular, it was found that chronic disease should be included as an explanatory variable to arrive at unbiased measures of the efficacy of vaccinations in reducing deaths. In addition, the percentage of people over the age of 65 was …

Pimavanserin Treatment Increases Plasma Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Levels In Rats, Ashutosh Tripathi, Henry A Nasrallah, Anilkumar Pillai
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Pimavanserin, a serotonin 5HT-2A receptor inverse agonist is the first-line, FDA-approved treatment of hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson's Disease psychosis (PDP), which occurs in up to 50% of PD patients. The neurobiological mechanism underlying the therapeutic effectiveness of Pimavanserin in PDP remains unknown. Several earlier studies have shown that treatment with 5HT-2A antagonists and other drugs acting on the serotonergic system such as SSRIs increase Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in rodents. BDNF is synthesized as the precursor proBDNF, that undergoes cleavage intra or extracellularly to produce a mature BDNF (mBDNF) protein. mBDNF is believed to play …

Background and Objective
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) represents a significant achievement in the translation of scientific research to clinical application, but it is currently the only neuroprotective treatment for HIE. This review aims to revisit the use of TH for HIE and its longitudinal impact on patient outcomes to readers new to the field of HIE. We discuss how emerging therapies address the broader pathophysiology of injury progression in the neonatal brain days to years after HIE.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal and neonatal infections are among the most frequent causes of maternal and neonatal mortality, and current antibiotic strategies have been ineffective in preventing many of these deaths. A randomised clinical trial conducted in a single site in The Gambia showed that treatment with an oral dose of 2 g azithromycin versus placebo for all women in labour reduced certain maternal and neonatal infections. However, it is unknown if this therapy reduces maternal and neonatal sepsis and mortality. In a large, multinational randomised trial, we will evaluate the impact of azithromycin given in labour to improve maternal and newborn …
