Communicating Unexpected Genetic Information With Family Members: A Multimethod Study Of Secondary Findings Recipients, Julie Chevalier Sapp Oct 2023

Communicating Unexpected Genetic Information With Family Members: A Multimethod Study Of Secondary Findings Recipients, Julie Chevalier Sapp

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Medically-actionable secondary genomic findings (SF) can be life- preserving or life-prolonging for recipients but this benefit can only extend to family members if this information is shared with relatives. How SF recipients communicate this important genetic information with relatives, barriers and facilitators to this process, and SF recipients’ lived experiences in communicating about their results over time remain largely unknown. Family communication is required for relatives of SF recipients to access cascade testing and the potential benefits of enhanced screening and management. Applying behavioral and implementation science theories and providing rich and deep descriptions of SF recipients’ lived experiences …

Rumination Syndrome Diagnosis Supported By Colon Manometry In A Pediatric Patient, Alex Biller, John Rosen, Amornluck Krasaelap

Posters

Introduction: Rumination syndrome is a disorder of gut-brain interaction characterized by effortless repetitive postprandial regurgitation, reswallowing, and/or spitting.(1) This condition is caused by increased intragastric pressure due to abdominal muscle contractions, leading to the opening of the lower esophageal sphincter and the return of gastric content into the esophagus.(1) Rumination is a clinical diagnosis after the exclusion of other etiologies of symptoms. The diagnosis of rumination is clinical, but supportive evidence can be obtained through esophageal or antroduodenal manometry.(2) We present a unique case report of rumination syndrome diagnosis supported by data obtained during colon manometry in a pediatric patient. …

Oscillometry In Term Neonates Without Respiratory Disease, Anna Nelson, Cheri Gauldin, Brooke Smith, Venkatesh Sampath, Winston M. Manimtim

Posters

Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is one of the most common complications of prematurity. While severity of BPD is defined by need and type of respiratory support at 36 weeks, it does not distinguish between endotypes of disease. Recent studies suggest that infants with severe BPD have parenchymal, airway and pulmonary vascular disease. Determining the BPD phenotype could help guide future individualized therapy. Oscillometry is a bedside tool that measures the resistance of the airways and the reactance of the pulmonary parenchyma. Normative values of oscillometry need to be established to serve as a comparison prior to establishing oscillometry characteristics of …

Increasing The Rate Of Infants Rooming In With Their Mothers With Low Acuity Congenital Heart Disease, Anna Nelson, Amy Marks, Ekta Patel Oct 2023

Increasing The Rate Of Infants Rooming In With Their Mothers With Low Acuity Congenital Heart Disease, Anna Nelson, Amy Marks, Ekta Patel

Posters

Background The Children’s Mercy Fetal Health Center (FHC) was created to be able to deliver infants with complex fetal diagnoses including congenital heart disease. Mothers are referred from all over the Midwest region for their babies to have access to specialized care immediately after birth. Nearly all babies born in the FHC are admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as there are not well-established guidelines for keeping babies with their mothers if they have low-risk congenital heart disease that do not need intensive care continuous monitoring. Maternal infant bonding starts before an infant is born and becomes stronger …

Measuring Quality Of Care For Universal Health Coverage In The Western Pacific, Arianna Maever Loreche, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, Kenneth Y. Hartigan-Go, Manuel M. Dayrit

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

To deliver on the promise of universal health coverage, regions and countries need to invest in high-quality health systems and put quality of care at the forefront of priority setting and agenda. The Western Pacific Region and its member countries should establish measurements and standards to ensure delivery of high-quality services. In order to effectively do so, individual and system capacities to measure and use quality-of-care data should be strengthened, localized initiatives to develop quality-of-care measures of practice and policy relevance need to be carried out, accountability mechanisms should be in place, and the role of quality as a driver …

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Background

Temperature has a significant impact on dengue incidence, however, changes on the temperature-dengue relationship across axes of socio-economic vulnerability is not well described. This study sought to determine the association between dengue and temperature in multiple locations in the Philippines and explore the effect modification by socio-economic factors.

Method

Nationwide dengue cases per province from 2010 to 2019 and data on temperature were obtained from the Philippines’ Department of Health–Epidemiological Bureau and ERA5-land, respectively. A generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) with a distributed lag non-linear model was utilized to examine the association between temperature and dengue inci-dence. We further …

This study aimed to understand the strategies elementary-school-aged children used to influence mothers' food purchasing decisions. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 children aged 6–11 years and their mothers living in South Carolina. Strategies to influence mothers' food purchases were collected from children and their mothers separately. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and open-coded. The constant comparative method was used for data analysis. Coding matrices were used to compare children's and mothers' responses on the children's strategies. Children reported 157 instances of 25 distinct strategies to influence mothers' purchasing decisions. Mothers had concordance with 83 instances of these …

The Importance Of Cultural Competency: Improving Patient-Provider Relationships Improves Hispanic Health, Lizeth Tapia Oct 2023

The Importance Of Cultural Competency: Improving Patient-Provider Relationships Improves Hispanic Health, Lizeth Tapia

Honors Theses

Background: Hispanics living in the U.S have poor health compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. Hispanics experience more disease, a higher likelihood of dying from chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease and unintentional injuries. Aside from prevention knowledge and access to healthcare, another factor that can affect Hispanic health is the patient-provider relationships. More specifically, culturally competent healthcare providers are more likely to have better communication and interactions with their patients as they understand their culture and can apply it into the healthcare setting. Therefore, cultural competency is key to improving health outcomes among Hispanic patients and an important skill to …

Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas Oct 2023

Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Patients are not habitually screened for palliative care consultations, and there is no protocol for initiating communication with palliative care. Not only is this a problem at the local and state level, but only about 5% of acute care patients nationally are estimated to utilize palliative care services. This delay in specialty care that palliative consultations could provide negatively impacts patients. Purpose: This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to determine if a palliative care trigger tool in an intensive care unit (ICU) would increase the number of palliative care consultations. Methods: A pre-implementation survey was distributed to ICU …

Integration Of Problem-Solving Therapy To Address Mental Health Needs Of Family Medicine Patients, Robert M. Sutter

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Patients in Family Medicine at an academic medical center in the Southeast who show signs and symptoms of depression are being referred to behavioral health to manage their depression symptoms. Long waiting lists, which delay the patient’s time to see behavioral health and a lack of patient education about the need for mental health services led to delays in patient care and poor appointment adherence.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine if providing Problem Solving Therapy (PST) in a one-time setting, after referral from the primary care provider (PCP), with psychoeducation, decreases depression scores for …
