The mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) is a prototypic betaretrovirus that causes breast cancer in mice. MMTV regulates its gene expression both at the transcriptional and post transcriptional levels. It has hormonally-regulated promoters controlled by negative regulatory factors in a tissue-specific manner. Recently, we identified a novel 24-nucleotide region at the 5' end of the MMTV genome crucial for MMTV gene expression. Its deletion resulted in disruption of MMTV transcript elongation and stability, leading to a complete loss of Gag gene expression. This conserved element is present within the bifurcated stem loop 4, responsible for gRNA dimerization and encapsidation, into …

Quad Bike Injuries In The United Arab Emirates: Evidence For Injury Prevention Strategies, Preetha Menon Karuveetil
Dissertations
Quad bikes, also known as All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), are versatile vehicles designed for navigating uneven terrain. Originally intended for agricultural purposes, they have gained popularity for recreational use, particularly in the middle east, notably the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While these vehicles offer health benefits, they are associated with substantial safety risks, resulting in injuries ranging from lacerations to severe traumatic injuries, imposing a significant economic burden on healthcare systems.
This research addresses a critical gap in the existing literature by focusing on quad bike injuries in the unique context of the UAE, taking into account its desert environment, rider …

Effects Of Adropin On Metabolic Parameters, Oxidative Stress, And Cell Proliferation In Animal Model Of Diabetes Mellitus, Ifrah Ismail Ali
Dissertations
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major health condition that has reached alarming levels, affecting around 537 million of the global adult population. DM is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia with disturbance in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. The proposed therapeutic options for DM are different according to their mechanism of action, and peptide therapy is one of these options. Adropin, a peptide hormone involved in energy homeostasis, has shown promising results in the treatment of diabetes by lowering fasting blood glucose, reducing insulin resistance, and minimizing fat storage. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that adropin is engaged …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Background: Thirty million small and sick newborns worldwide require inpatient care each year. Many receive antibiotics for clinically diagnosed infections without blood cultures, the current ‘gold standard’ for neonatal infection detection. Low neonatal blood culture use hampers appropriate antibiotic use, fuelling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which threatens newborn survival. This study analysed the gap between blood culture use and antibiotic prescribing in hospitals implementing with Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies (NEST360) in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
Methods: Inpatient data from every newborn admission record (July 2019–August 2022) were included to describe hospital-level blood culture use and antibiotic prescription. Health Facility …

The Effect Of Nursing Education On The Utilization Of Kangaroo Mother Care And Weight Gain Of Preterm And Low Birth Weight Infants, Jhenalynn Valete
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), often referred to as skin-to-skin contact, is an intervention for preterm and low birth weight infants, involving the practice of the mother or caregiver holding the newborn against their bare chest (Cleveland Clinic, 2023). This is a cost-effective and natural way to enhance health outcomes such as temperature regulation, weight gain, respiratory function, pain mitigation, and facilitation of breastfeeding for the neonate (Jefferies et al., 2012).
Nursing staff may have limited knowledge regarding KMC which creates challenges in effectively educating parents. This information prompts the following question: “Can Nurse Education about the Importance of Kangaroo Mother …

Culinary Medicine And The Promotion Of Plant-Based Diets: Is Caution Needed For Older Adults?, Wendy J. Dahl, Sayaka Nagao-Sato, Christina Riccardo
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Culinary Medicine (CM), which combines food, cooking, and the science of medicine1 for the management of chronic disease conditions, is an emerging practice area for health professionals, particularly physicians.2 Culinary skills and food-disease-related knowledge are enhanced by CM training3 ; however, there is much to learn regarding optimal program outcome measures.4 What cannot be gained from a CM program is the comprehensive nutrition knowledge that may be needed to ensure CM prescriptions result in benefits and minimize harm. This may be particularly important for older adults.

Platelets play many roles in the vasculature ensuring proper hemostasis and maintaining integrity. These roles are facilitated, in part, by cargo molecules released from platelet granules via Soluble NSF Attachment Protein Receptor (SNARE) mediated membrane fusion, which is controlled by several protein-protein interactions. Chaperones have been characterized for t-SNAREs (i.e. Munc18b for Syntaxin-11), but none have been clearly identified for v-SNAREs. α- Synuclein has been proposed as a v-SNARE chaperone which may affect SNARE-complex assembly, fusion pore opening, and thus secretion. Despite its abundance and that it is the only isoform present, α-synuclein’s role in platelet secretion is uncharacterized. In …

Dentistry And The Law: Problems With Referral Incentives Explained, Dan Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Incorporating referral incentives in dentistry, like gift cards or raffles, can present ethical and legal issues. The MDA's ethical rule 4.E prohibits rebates or fee splitting, extending to any referral source, including patients. Gift cards may be perceived as rebates. Raffle tickets are less problematic, but only the winner gains something of value. State law (MCL 333.16221) deems fee division unethical. For insurance and dental plan agreements, check for clauses mandating specific fee schedules and discouraging referral fees to ensure compliance. Federal laws might also apply if incentives are used for Medicaid or Medicare patients.

Neurodegenerative disease is a debilitating and incurable condition that affects millions of people around the world. The loss of functions or malfunctions of neural cells are the causes of mortality. A proteosome inhibitor, MG132, is well known to cause neurodegeneration in vitro when model neuronal-derived cell lines are exposed to it. Niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, which has been used to treat tapeworm infections for more than 50 years, has recently attracted renewed attention in drug repurposing because it has been found to be a good candidate in many drug development screenings. We recently found that all markers of MG132-induced neuronal …

Invisible In Plain Sight: A Qualitative Analysis Of The U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study And Contemporary Issues Of Iatrophobia In Black Women, Krystal Morgan
Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship
The U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study (USPHSSS) is the nation’s most infamous example of biomedical misconduct in the United States. Using the wives and the descendants of the USPHSSS as a case study, this project examines and conceptualizes how the lack of healthcare access and secondhand healthcare the wives and descendants received has had a cumulative impact on Black women and contemporary iatrophobia, using a Black feminist ethical and constructivist theoretical framework. Findings reflect two major themes for contemporary iatrophobia: systemic racism and what Muhjah Shakir terms the cultural constellation of silence.

Background: Regulation of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays an important role in aging and nutrition. For example, caloric restriction reduces mTORC1 signaling and extends lifespan, whereas nutrient abundance and obesity increase mTORC1 signaling and reduce lifespan. Skeletal muscle-specific knockout (KO) of DEP domain-containing 5 protein (DEPDC5) results in constitutively active mTORC1 signaling, muscle hypertrophy and an increase in mitochondrial respiratory capacity. The metabolic profile of skeletal muscle, in the setting of hyperactive mTORC1 signaling, is not well known.
Objectives: To determine the metabolomic and lipidomic signature in skeletal muscle from female and male wild-type (WT) and DEPDC5 …
Collaborative Practices Between General Education Teachers And Teachers Of The Deaf/Hard Of Hearing: A Narrative Inquiry, Kayla Power
