Intellectual capital is a scarce resource in the healthcare industry. Making the most of this resource is the first step toward achieving a completely intelligent healthcare system. However, most existing centralized and deep learning-based systems are unable to adapt to the growing volume of global health records and face application issues. To balance the scarcity of healthcare resources, the emerging trend of IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) and edge computing will be very practical and cost-effective. A full examination of the transformational role of intelligent edge computing in the IoMT era to attain health care equity is offered in this …

Impact Of An Aprn Directed Workflow Change On Outpatient Palliative Care Referral Acceptance Rates, Stefanie Rashti
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Patients diagnosed with an advanced disease or serious illness often experience a variety of distressing symptoms that can negatively impact their functional status and quality of life. Outpatient palliative care is a medical specialty that often requires a referral from a primary care or specialty care provider who has identified a need for specialized pain and symptom management, psychosocial or caregiver distress, end-of-life care management, or goals of care discussions. Despite notable effectiveness in the provision of palliative care for patients with advanced disease and serious illness, barriers exist that prevent patients from accepting palliative care referrals even after …
Anticoagulation Adherence In Atrial Fibrillation Patients With A Scheduled Cardioversion, Caitlin Naimo
Anticoagulation Adherence In Atrial Fibrillation Patients With A Scheduled Cardioversion, Caitlin Naimo
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Atrial fibrillation is a chronic disease managed through rate control, rhythm control, and anticoagulation. Anticoagulation compliance must be verified when a patient needs a cardioversion to convert to normal sinus rhythm. If a patient has missed a dose within the last four weeks, a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) is required to confirm that a clot has not formed in the heart. Medication noncompliance plagues the healthcare industry, costing millions of preventable healthcare dollars. The literature review shows that educational and behavioral interventions effectively increased medication compliance. Educational material was created, and a verified medication compliance survey was utilized to evaluate anticoagulation …

Epigenetics And Social Inequalities In Asthma And Allergy, Elizabeth S. Clausing, Cassidy J. Tomlinson, Amy L. Non
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Respiratory illnesses, such as asthma and allergy disorders, are disproportionately more common among minority racial/ethnic groups and those of low socioeconomic status. In the United States, asthma prevalence and severity are highest among Puerto Ricans (19.2%), American Indians/Alaska Natives (13%), and Black Americans (12.7%) and higher in families living below the poverty threshold than among those living above it (11% vs 8%–9%).1 Many studies of asthma/allergy inequalities assume that genetic differences underlie racial/ethnic differences in these disorders, pointing to genetic ancestry differences between races, but most genetic variants fail to explain racial/ethnic differences and are usually studied only in …

The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Rabies Management Program (NRMP) has coordinated the use of oral rabies vaccination (ORV) to control the spread of raccoon rabies virus variant west of the Appalachian Mountains since 1997. Working with state and local partners, the NRMP deploys ORV baits containing a rabies vaccine, primarily targeting raccoon populations (Procyon lotor). Bait competition between raccoons and non-target species may limit the effectiveness of ORV programs, but the extent of bait competition remains poorly quantified, particularly in the southeastern United States. We placed placebo ORV baits in bottomland hardwood (n = 637 baits) and upland …
Examining A Blood Biomarker Approach To Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption, Samantha Ford
Examining A Blood Biomarker Approach To Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption, Samantha Ford
Theses and Dissertations--Medical Sciences
Blood-brain barrier disruption has been identified to associate with the pathogenesis several neurological diseases such as dementia [1, 2], multiple sclerosis[3, 4], acute or chronic cerebral ischemia[5], brain trauma[5], meningitis[5], encephalitis[5], stroke[6], and seizures[7]. Being able to effectively identify blood-brain barrier disruption is limited in methodology. The current standard is using a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) albumin to serum albumin index, which requires the use of a lumbar puncture. A novel method of identifying blood-brain barrier disruption utilizing blood biomarkers is proposed in this study. Participants in this study had previously collected blood and CSF samples, which were analyzed to compare …

Brain functional networks identified from resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data have the potential to reveal biomarkers for brain disorders, but studies of complex mental illnesses such as schizophrenia (SZ) often yield mixed results across replication studies. This is likely due in part to the complexity of the disorder, the short data acquisition time, and the limited ability of the approaches for brain imaging data mining. Therefore, the use of analytic approaches which can both capture individual variability while offering comparability across analyses is highly preferred. Fully blind data-driven approaches such as independent component analysis (ICA) are hard to …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other classes of dementia are important public health problems with overwhelming social, physical, and financial effects for patients, society, and their families and caregivers. The pathophysiology of AD is poorly understood despite the extensive number of clinical and experimental studies. The brain's lipid-rich composition is linked to disturbances in lipid homeostasis, often associated with glucose and lipid abnormalities in various neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Moreover, elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels may be related to a higher probability of AD. Here, we hypothesize that lipids, and electronegative LDL (L5) in particular, may be involved in the …

Background and objective: Whole body manipulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) consistently exerts profound effects on experimental atherosclerosis development. A deficit in the literature has been a lack of attention to the effects of sex. Also, based on data with gene-deleted mice, the site of RAS activity that influences lesion formation is at an unknown distant location. Since angiotensin (AngII) concentrations are high in kidney and the major components of the RAS are present in renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs), this study evaluated the role of the RAS in PTCs in atherosclerosis development.
Methods and results: Mice with an LDL …
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The following project involves a systematic review of the scientific literature on neural and biological changes of mothers and fathers in parenthood. Until very recently, little scientific research was devoted to studying how bearing children affects a man or woman’s long-term biology. Over the last twenty years, studies of neuroplastic changes in new mothers show specific neural mechanisms responsible for altering the behaviors of mothers during and after pregnancy. These changes in neuroplasticity alter behavior in such a way that led to mothers requiring less sleep and being more prone to hearing the cries of their children. In addition to …

Increasing Clergy Members Awareness, Sensitivity, And Knowledge (Ask) Of The Lgbtqia+ Community Improves Health Outcomes, Claudette Green
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction: Individuals who identify as belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community in the context of religion and faith often experience spiritual discrimination and are made to feel like an outcast (Cole & Harris, 2017). Often, spiritual leaders lack the training, knowledge, and skills necessary to understand and communicate in a way that offers solace and comfort to their LGBTQIA+ congregants (Yarhouse & Sadusky, 2020). Moreover, the church has been at the forefront of leading the discrimination and condemnation of LGBTQIA+ members. This discrimination has led many to leave the church and become involved in self-harming behavior, ongoing mental health struggles, …

Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd
Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Ineffective handoff communication has been recognized for years as a practice issue and is the most frequently reported cause of sentinel events in U.S. hospitals (Dufault et al., 2010) and responsible, at least in part, for 30% of all malpractice claims (Fucik, 2019). The development of standardized tools has been identified as a key component to improving handover practice. For this project, a standardized SBAR tool was modified for a local emergency department. The intervention was a process change in the emergency department to utilize an SBAR tool during handoff reports. The project was implemented by educating staff on the …

Background
A common goal for healthcare is healthcare for all, through which can be achieved when communication between the client and healthcare team is established. There are millions of immigrants worldwide who are not granted the healthcare that they deserve simply because of a lack of understanding in a country’s dominant language.
Patients with a limited language proficiency in a new country can have difficulty in understanding the care that they receive, which leads them to toil with understanding their healthcare options, let alone establishing expectations. This issue also stretches onto the risks of patient safety, in which urgent needs …
The Feminine Vs Masculine Nurse: The Effects Of Gender Stereotypes In Nursing, Makrisel Lapitan
The Feminine Vs Masculine Nurse: The Effects Of Gender Stereotypes In Nursing, Makrisel Lapitan
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background
The field of nursing has been a predominantly female profession since the introduction of modern nursing by Florence Nightingale in 1860. While more men are beginning to enter the field, there are still many stereotypes surrounding the role of a nurse. For women, this may include qualities such as caring and being empathetic or motherly. Conversely, there are assumptions that men are unable to bestow those same qualities and are therefore unworthy of working within the occupation. Female nurses may experience difficulty progressing professionally or feel that their male counterparts are more favored. Male nurses may observe that the …
