Walkable Neighborhoods: Linkages Between Place, Health, And Happiness In Younger And Older Adults, Kevin M. Leyden, Michael J. Hogan, Lorraine D'Arcy, Brendan Bunting, Sebastiaan Bierema

Articles

Problem, research strategy, and findings: We examined whether living in a walkable neighborhood influenced the happiness of younger and older city residents. The data for this study came from a comprehensive household population survey of 1,064 adults living in 16 neighborhoods in Dublin City (Ireland) and its suburbs. We used multigroup structural equation modeling to analyze the direct and indirect effects of walkability on happiness, mediated by health, trust, and satisfaction with neighborhood appearance. We found living in a walkable neighborhood was directly linked to the happiness of people aged 36 to 45 (p¼.001) and, to a lesser extent, those …

Assembly Of Synaptic Protein-Dna Complexes: Critical Role Of Non-Specific Interactions, Sridhar Vemulapalli, Mohtadin Hashemi, Anatoly B. Kolomeisky, Yuri L. Lyubchenko

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

The synaptic protein-DNA complexes, formed by specialized proteins that bridge two or more distant sites on DNA, are critically involved in various genetic processes. However, the molecular mechanism by which the protein searches for these sites and how it brings them together is not well understood. Our previous studies directly visualized search pathways used by SfiI, and we identified two pathways, DNA threading and site-bound transfer pathways, specific to the site-search process for synaptic DNA-protein systems. To investigate the molecular mechanism behind these site-search pathways, we assembled complexes of SfiI with various DNA substrates corresponding to different transient states and …

Amyloid Cascade Hypothesis For Alzheimer’S Disease. Does It Work Under Physiological Conditions?, Yuri L. Lyubchenko Jan 2023

Amyloid Cascade Hypothesis For Alzheimer’S Disease. Does It Work Under Physiological Conditions?, Yuri L. Lyubchenko

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Plaques in the brain consisting of proteins are a hallmark of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Such aggregates can be assembled spontaneously by specialized proteins such as amyloid beta (Ab) proteins in the case of AD. Numerous in vitro studies made a foundation for the Amyloid Cascade Hypothesis (ACH), according to which the misfolding of proteins leads to their self-assembly into toxic oligomers along with the formation of amyloid fibrils assembled as plaques in the brain. Notably physiological concentration of Ab proteins in the brain is in the low nanomolar concentration, so no spontaneous aggregation of …

T2 Dc: Transitional Support For Adolescents With Asd, Priscila De La Cruz, Charli Gipson, Carys Kirlew, Keelin Lagos

DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined by the CDC as a developmental disorder within the brain5. Throughout the nation, 1 in 36 children experience ASD, boys being four times more prevalent than girls. ASD has nonbehavioral effects such as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures, or sleep disorders, amongst many other mental side effects1. Recent studies have associated a lack of resources with feelings of isolation, difficulty in accomplishing daily activities, and many more negative impacts for individuals with ASD. As ASD is lifelong, we want to facilitate a smooth transition into adulthood as there are limited resources in DC for young …

The Scientific Study Of Positive Psychology, Religion/Spirituality, And Physical Health, Kevin S. Masters, Julia K. Boehm, Jennifer M. Boylan, Kaitlyn M. Vagnini, Christina L. Rush

Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Humans have long been interested in relations among religion/spirituality (R/S), positive psychological constructs, and physical health. Furthermore, many religions attempt to influence behavior through health-related prescriptions about food choices, sexual activity, substance use, and resting. Similarly, positive psychological constructs have been discussed in light of their presumed benefits on both mental and physical health (Ryff & Singer, 1998). However, R/S and positive psychological constructs have only recently become objects of scientific investigation of their associations with physical health.

Potential Mechanism Of 5-Ala Treatment Against Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus Infection By Downstream Metabolite Ppix, Carissa V. Napier

Scripps Senior Theses

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection is ubiquitous in domestic cats, and up to 12% of FCoV-infected cats may succumb to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). FIP is a highly lethal infectious disease caused by FIP virus (FIPV), the virulent biotype of FCoV. It is difficult to properly diagnose FIP, and to this date, there is no effective FCoV vaccine nor licensed therapeutic for FIPV. Considering the threat FIP poses to feline health, there is a demand from both owners and veterinarians for a proper therapeutic to effectively treat the infection. 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a highly bioavailable amino acid that is naturally …

Narrative Medicine: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Address Burnout Among The Nursing Workforce, Kimberly D. Perris, Eden J. Donahue, Adrian Matt Zytkoskee, Janelle Adsit

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Healthcare providers (HCPs) experience unprecedented burnout. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare workforce was pushed beyond its capacity, driving some out of the field, leaving hospitals and healthcare agencies to face unrelenting demand for care. Limited staff and resources challenged organizations to redesign infrastructure and processes to meet COVID-19 safety guidelines while balancing the priorities of finance and people.

Two years into the pandemic, the signs of burnout among nurses in an RN-BSN program surfaced, which paralleled the bitter resentment happening across the nursing profession. Nurses working on the front lines reported feelings of abandonment, lack of resources, staffing shortages, …

Bagg, Samantha Bunzli, Adrian C. Traeger, Sylvia M. Gustin, G. Lorimer Moseley, Saurab Sharma, Aidan Cashin, James Mcauley

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

A new wave of treatments has emerged to target nervous system alterations and maladaptive conceptualizations about pain for chronic low back pain. The acceptability of these treatments is still uncertain. We conducted a qualitative study alongside a randomized controlled trial to identify perceptions of facilitators or barriers to participation in a non-pharmacological intervention that resulted in clinically meaningful reductions across 12 months for disability compared to a sham intervention. We conducted semi-structured interviews with participants from the trial's active arm after they completed the 12-week program. We included a purposeful sample (baseline and clinical characteristics) (n = 20). We used …

The Influence Of Internalized Heterosexism On Life Satisfaction: Comparing Sexual Minority Women In Belgium And Turkey, Esra Ummak, Ezgi Toplu-Demirtaş, Amber L. Pope, Jeffry Moe

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

To date, the majority of research studying lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) health has been conducted in Westernized, predominantly individualistic countries. Building on minority stress theory and models of LGBTQ health, we explored how sexual orientation and nationality moderated the association between internalized heterosexism and life satisfaction for lesbian and bisexual (LB) women living in two countries (Turkey and Belgium) with contrasting social contexts. The results of two-way MANOVA, in a sample of 339 Turkish and 220 Belgian LB women, revealed main effects but no interaction effects. LB women in Belgium reported less internalized heterosexism and more life …

Persistent Challenges: Pulmonary Hypertension In Aortic Coarctation Despite Surgical Valve Replacement, Adam Devine, Jacklyn Garcia

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Introduction: Aortic coarctation has an incidence of 0.04% and is typically amendable either through a surgical or interventional approach. Unfortunately, patients that have undergone repair of the coarctation are at risk of systemic hypertension which suggests a more diffuse vasculopathy. The arteriopathy can also affect the pulmonary vasculature leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH). The development of PH is a poor prognostic factor. Patients with a history of coarctation repairs have more significant afterload measurements which stiffen their left ventricle and decrease compliance and diastolic function. Adults with Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) are at increased risk of premature cardiovascular death …
