Minimally Invasive vs. Surgical Approach for Treatment of Uterine Fibroids
Student Researcher: Breanna Smith
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Elaine Halesey, Ed. D., R.T. (R)(QM)(ARRT)
Abstract
Uterine fibroids are solid neoplasms that are common in women of reproductive age. These neoplasms are often present as benign, however they have an intense impact on the quality of life. Historically treatments involved surgery, however modern medical advancements allow for the option of minimally invasive treatments. Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a method of using embolic material to cut off blood supply to the fibroid, which shrinks and kills it. More invasive procedures include hysterectomy …

Computed Tomography Simulation In Radiation Therapy For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Victoria Narbone
Student Research Poster Presentations 2023
The purpose of this research is to educate readers on the role of computed tomography (CT) simulation in the radiation therapy process, specifically for patients with lung cancer. The goal of radiation therapy treatment is to maximize the dose to a target, usually a tumor, while minimizing the dose to the normal surrounding tissue. CT imaging creates cross-sectional images of the patient’s anatomy which can be used to create a treatment plan. In non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC) there are four critical structures of concern including the spinal cord, esophagus, heart, healthy lung. CT simulation uses images to localize the tumor …

In humans, skin blood flux (SkBF) and eccrine sweating are tightly coupled, suggesting common neural control and regulation. This study was designed to separate these two sympathetic nervous system end-organ responses via nonadrenergic SkBF- decreasing mechanical perturbations during heightened sudomotor drive. We induced sweating physiologically via whole body heat stress using a high-density tube-lined suit (protocol 1; 2 women, 4 men), and pharmacologically via forearm intradermal microdialysis of two steady-state doses of a cholinergic agonist, pilocarpine (protocol 2; 4 women, 3 men). During sweating induction, we decreased SkBF via three mechanical perturbations: arm and leg dependency to engage the cutaneous …

Food Insecurity On College Campuses: Addressing The Issue Through A Student-Centered Perspective, Thomas Ard
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Research indicates food insecurity (FI) has become a consistent challenge for college students. However, more is needed regarding the students' lived experiences of food insecurity following the COVID-19 pandemic. Universities play a vital role in assisting students with food insecurity through food assistance programs, on-campus resources, and financial help, which impacts their physiological needs and academic performance. A better understanding of what influences students' perceptions and decisions about whether to engage in these resources is essential.
This dissertation's purpose was to explore how college students living with food insecurity experience engaging in food assistance programs (FAP). The study used a …
Integrating Spiritual Tools And Practices In Mental Health Care: A Scoping Review Of Spiritual Healing From The African Continent, Meron Girma
Public Health Theses
Western medicine typically describes traditional and spiritual healing as a homogenous healing system independent, and in many ways antagonistic to “science.” However, Western medicine fails to acknowledge the global influence of traditional and spiritual practices and its potential to strengthen current mental wellness care. For centuries, traditional and spiritual healing has served as a foundational system in many African nations, utilized to overcome challenges, pain and trauma. It is rooted in harmonious monism which reconciles the duality between mind and matter and conceptualizes the universe as interconnected and interdependent. African spiritual practices unite individuals to a community of shared values, …

For “Them”, Not Us: A Qualitative Study Of Asian American Pacific Islander Perceptions Of Substance Use And Harm Reduction, Winnie Ho
Public Health Theses
Background: Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) substance use data is typically aggregated in a way that not only produces overly generalized results, but also potentially perpetuates stereotypes created by the Model Minority Myth (MMM). This has mutually reinforced a lack of representation and understanding of AAPI substance use experiences and needs. This presents a public health concern that is both excluding them from consideration by the field of harm reduction, but also themselves from considering harm reduction. Disaggregated data shows rising rates of substance use and associated harms that are often hidden or not taken as seriously as a public …

Influence Of Stigma On Retention In Hiv Care And Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy In Specialized Hiv Clinics Targeting Men Who Have Sex With Men And Transgender Women In Lima, Peru, David Oliveros Oliveros
Public Health Theses
HIV stigma is a social determinant of health that can influence adherence to antiretroviraltherapy (ART) and engagement in HIV care that impacts viral suppression levels for people with HIV (PWH). In Peru, a country which lags behind 95-95-95 targets for HIV outcomes, LGBTQ-affirming clinics have the potential to mitigate these negative health effects of stigma and discrimination among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW), two populations that continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. Using a validated HIV stigma scale and multivariate logistic regression models, this study assessed the magnitude and types of stigma present …
Intersectoral Responses To Climate Change And Waterborne Diseases In The Caribbean Region: Current Actions And Pathways Forward Using The One Health Framework, Sydney A. Steel
Public Health Theses
The Caribbean exists on the frontlines of climate change, and many climate-related threats are already felt throughout the region and projected to worsen in the coming decades. A critical climate-related threat is that of waterborne diseases, as extreme weather events, sea level rise, and temperature increases are shown to contribute to potable water inaccessibility and a more favorable environment for pathogen proliferation and transmission. The complexity of this challenge calls for increased regional and inter-sectoral collaboration in both preparedness and response efforts. Countries and territories across the Caribbean are currently displaying variable yet marked interest in One Health, yet there …

Examining Genetically Regulated Gene Expression As A Potential Biomarker For Postpartum Depression Screening, Eileen Zhu
Public Health Theses
Background: PPD is one of most common complications of pregnancy but is underdiagnosed and undertreated with less than 10% of women with PPD receiving adequate treatment. Currently, the most well-validated screening questionnaire for perinatal depression, the EPDS, produces a high false positive rate and results in a large number of unnecessary referrals. Objective: The principal emphasis of this investigation will center upon the estrogen sensitivity, which hypothesizes that individuals with a history of PPD will have differences in estrogen receptor gene (ESR1 and ESR2) mediated responses to estradiol and thus, are likely to be more sensitive to the abrupt drop …
