Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Varenicline and oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) have each been shown to increase the likelihood of smoking cessation, but their combination has not been studied. In addition, smoking cessation medication adherence is often poor, thus, challenging the ability to evaluate medication efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of combined varenicline and oral NRT and smartphone medication reminders on pharmacotherapy adherence and smoking abstinence among adults enrolled in smoking cessation treatment.

METHODS: A 2×2 factorial design was used. Participants (N=34) were randomized to (1) varenicline + oral NRT (VAR+NRT) or varenicline alone (VAR) and (2) smartphone medication reminder messages …

Faculty Scholarship for the College of Science & Mathematics

BACKGROUND: Several stand-alone smartphone apps have used serious games to provide an engaging approach to quitting smoking. So far, the uptake of these games has been modest, and the evidence base for their efficacy in promoting smoking cessation is still evolving. The feasibility of integrating a game into a popular smoking cessation app is unclear.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to describe the design and iterative development of the Inner Dragon game within Smoke Free, a smartphone app with proven efficacy, and the results of a single-arm feasibility trial as part of a broad program that seeks to …

Using The 2as And R Method To Encourage Referral To Smoking Cessation Counseling In An Urban Pulmonary Clinic, Jennifer Holloway Jul 2023

Using The 2as And R Method To Encourage Referral To Smoking Cessation Counseling In An Urban Pulmonary Clinic, Jennifer Holloway

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Smoking is a habit of millions of Americans despite the associated preventable health issues and death that it produces. Smoking cessation programs, particularly those using pharmacotherapy, are effective in increasing smoking cessation rates. However, smoking cessation programs remain underutilized.

Purpose: The purpose of the DNP project is to educate providers on using the 2As and R (ask, advise, and refer) of smoking cessation to assess a patient’s readiness to quit and refer to smoking cessation counseling. For providers working in an urban pulmonary clinic, does education regarding the use of the 2As and R method as a standardized intervention …

Smoking Cessation Through Optimisation Of Clinical Care In Pregnancy: The Stop Randomised Controlled Trial, Brendan P. Mcdonnell, Patrick Dicker, Sheila Keogan, Luke Clancy, Carmen Regan

Articles

This is a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of a dedicated smoking cessation clinic versus routine antenatal care as an intervention to reduce cigarette smoking behaviour. Smoking mothers randomised to the Smoking cessation Through Optimisation of clinical care in Pregnancy (STOP) clinic will have all antenatal care provided by a team comprising an obstetrician, a midwife, and a smoking cessation practitioner. This intervention includes ultrasound screening for fetal growth restriction. The control arm comprises two groups: one receiving standard care with ultrasound screening for fetal growth restriction, and one receiving standard care with ultrasound screening for growth restriction only if clinically …

The Effectiveness Of Allen Carr's Method For Smoking Cessation: A Systematic Review, Irene Possenti, Marco Scala, Alessandra Lugo, Luke Clancy, Sheila Keogan, Silvano Gallus

Articles

Introduction: Allen Carr's (AC) method is a pharmacotherapy-free approach to quit smoking that is delivered through seminars, online courses, or in the form of a book. It has gained popularity, but its effectiveness remains controversial due to a lack of scientific evidence. This systematic review aims to provide an updated overview of the current evidence on the effectiveness of the AC method.

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of all epidemiological studies evaluating the effectiveness of the AC method for smoking cessation, published in PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase up to March 2023.

Results: Among 34 original studies identified through the …

Enhancing Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Smoking Cessation Counseling To Improve Patient- Centered Care At A Federally Funded Urgent Care Center: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Adam N. Waller Ii

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: It is well documented that there is a high prevalence of Veteran tobacco use in the United States. Additionally, providing smoking cessation counseling in an emergency setting is beneficial. The broader Veteran Affairs (VA) macrosystem has a plethora of smoking cessation resources available for Veterans. Within a VA Urgent Care Center (UCC) a quality improvement initiative was conducted that focused on increasing registered nurses (RNs) self-efficacy in providing smoking cessation counseling. Prior to this quality improvement (QI) project, smoking cessation did not occur in this UCC. If RNs have higher self-efficacy more smoking cessation counseling will occur.

Methods …
