Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT NATIVE AMERICA MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT PERCEPTION OF NURSING AS A CAREER CHOICE
The nursing profession has made concerted efforts to increase diversity in the profession. Given the population of Native Americans is increasing, increasing the number of Native American nurses is important. Having a sufficient number of Native American nurses could increase the quality of care the Native American population receives as evidence indicates communication and interactions in enhanced when communicating with a nurse of same race. Having a larger number of Native American registered nurses (RN)s would “foster better interaction and communication” (Institute of Medicine, 2010b, p. 128)/Purpose: …

The degree of synchronized fluctuations in neocortical network activity can vary widely during alertness. One influential idea that has emerged over the past few decades is that perceptual decisions are more accurate when the state of population activity is desynchronized. This suggests that optimal task performance may occur during a particular cortical state - the desynchronized state. Here we show that, contrary to this view, cortical state can both facilitate and suppress perceptual performance in a task-dependent manner. We performed electrical recordings from surface-implanted grid electrodes in the temporal lobe while human subjects completed two perceptual tasks. We found that …

Experience-dependent plasticity of synapses modulates information processing in neural circuits and is essential for cognitive functions. The genome, via non-coding enhancers, was proposed to control information processing and circuit plasticity by regulating experience-induced transcription of genes that modulate specific sets of synapses. To test this idea, we analyze here the cellular and circuit functions of the genomic mechanisms that control the experience-induced transcription of Igf1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) in vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) interneurons (INs) in the visual cortex of adult mice. We find that two sensory-induced enhancers selectively and cooperatively drive the activity-induced transcription of Igf1 to thereby …

Magnitude Estimates Of Angular Motion: Perception Of Speed And Spatial Orientation Across Visual And Vestibular Modalities, Erin Hernon
Dissertations, 2020-current
Both the vestibular system and optokinetic system generate conjugate eye movements in response to either movement of the head or movement of the visual surround. Both systems help to maintain gaze stability. While the VOR is most sensitive to input frequencies above .2 Hz, the optokinetic system helps maintain gaze stability at lower frequencies. Previous research on perceptual thresholds across the two sensory modalities shows that there are frequency-dependent differences between vestibular and visual perception. The purpose of this study is to extend previous vestibular psychophysics work by 1) comparing magnitude estimates from vestibular stimulation to visual stimulation across multiple …

From Perception To Behavior: The Neural Circuits Underlying Prey Hunting In Larval Zebrafish, Shuyu I Zhu, Geoffrey J Goodhill
2020-Current year OA Pubs
A key challenge for neural systems is to extract relevant information from the environment and make appropriate behavioral responses. The larval zebrafish offers an exciting opportunity for studying these sensing processes and sensory-motor transformations. Prey hunting is an instinctual behavior of zebrafish that requires the brain to extract and combine different attributes of the sensory input and form appropriate motor outputs. Due to its small size and transparency the larval zebrafish brain allows optical recording of whole-brain activity to reveal the neural mechanisms involved in prey hunting and capture. In this review we discuss how the larval zebrafish brain processes …

Perceptions Of Capacity, Fatigue, And Their Psychophysics: Examining Construct Equivalence And The Relationship Between Actual Capacity And Perception Of Capacity During Resisted Elbow Flexion Tasks, James Steele, Matheus D. Pinto, Kazunori Nosaka, James L. Nuzzo
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The actual capacity to perform tasks, and actual fatigue, are concepts that have been thought of as inherently linked. These considerations also extend to their phenomenology, meaning the perception(s) of capacity or fatigue. The phenomenology of capacity or fatigue thus may be capturing the same underlying latent construct. Further, it is speculated that the actual capacity of a person to perform a given task, and their perception of that capacity, have a psychophysical relationship. The aim of this study was therefore twofold: 1) to explore the extensional equivalence of perceptions of capacity and fatigue, and 2) to explore the relationship …
