The Effect Of A Wellness Curriculum On First Semester Jmu Pa Students, Abigail Larson, Jeanine Aberbook
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Physician Assistant (PA) programs are rigorous graduate-level medical programs that achieve a Master’s degree but complete an equal number of credits as a Doctorate degree. They are notorious for triggering high levels of stress pre-matriculation as well as upon matriculation. While this is a well-known topic discussed between students and incoming students, it is an under-researched topic. As a result of the lack of research in physician assistant education regarding implementing a wellness curriculum and the desire to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms in first semester PA student, the faculty and students at James Madison University (JMU) implemented a …

Enhancing Leisure Participation For Women Who Are Experiencing Homelessness, Christine Truong, Susan Macdermott
Fall 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Opportunities to engage in leisure activities are limited for women experiencing homelessness (Klitzing, 2004). The purpose of this capstone was to develop a program for a residence serving women who are at risk of homelessness to improve their leisure participation and exploration. The needs assessment involved on-site observations at the Community Mission of Hope and Empowerment Village, literature review, client interviews, and an online questionnaire for volunteers and staff members. Although the program was not implemented due to time constraints and current programming already occurring, future sessions were outlined, and supplies were ordered through a grant to prepare for implementation. …

Introduction: Physician wellness is an important factor in the delivery of safe, effective and humanistic patient care. There is compelling data describing the widespread prevalence of physician burnout and its subsequent adverse impact on patient care, healthcare costs, and relationships. Initiatives to improve wellness are necessary to maintain the healthcare work force as well as to ensure high-quality care. This project investigated faculty physicians’ attitudes and priorities regarding physician wellness within the department of Pediatrics at a single-center academic institution.
Methods: A survey was created and distributed via e-mail to all faculty physicians employed within the Department of Pediatrics in …

Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Physical inactivity has become a significant health concern not only in the United States but worldwide. Adults are becoming sedentary due to sitting at work and school, computer use, and motorized transportation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers experienced increased workloads, increased sedentary work time for virtual classes, and longer work hours. A PreK-8th grade school system in the southeastern United States had health promotion and prevention programs for students but no health and wellness programs for teachers. Wellness programs can promote physical health and less worker absenteeism. At the completion of a 12-week walking program, the teacher's weekly time …

Healthcare Worker Burnout: An Impending Crisis Or An Opportunity For Organizational Posttraumatic Growth, Isabella Stofberg
Master's Projects and Capstones
Healthcare Worker Burnout (HCWB) has become a global and national phenomenon. Amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and further exacerbated by the healthcare worker shortage, healthcare institutions and policy makers find themselves in a unique position to incorporate creative solutions to address this seemingly monumental issue. The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon due to its causes being rooted in the work environment, rather than the individual. Caused by chronic workplace stress, burnout is characterized by mental exhaustion, feeling depleted, having mental distance from the job at hand, feeling negative or cynical as well as experiencing decreased professional …

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers not only had to manage how to treat a new disease but also had to increase their workload to keep up with the patients infected with the new virus. These physicians had to deal with an increase in patients and an increase in patient deaths. In addition, being a frontline worker meant that these physicians had more exposure to the virus than the general population. If they did contract the virus themselves, they had to go into quarantine, many times away from their families (Walton et al., 2020). A national survey done of physicians …

Retention And Career Success Of Faculty: The Case For Building A Sense Of Belonging To The Academic Medicine Community, Wendy L. Ward
Marshall Journal of Medicine
As attrition in the healthcare workforce rises, factors that positively impact retention, engagement, work satisfaction, and vitality for faculty in Colleges of Medicine are of critical importance. One important factor that is less often discussed is the need to develop a sense of belonging and connectedness to the institutional community. Underrepresented minority faculty particularly feel the benefit of feeling like they belong. Recommendations for enhancing faculty connectedness to a community in support of developing a sense of belonging to that community are offered.

Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Counselors-in-training (CITs) commonly encounter issues of burnout, compassion fatigue, and/or vicarious traumatization due to the nature of their jobs in the helping profession. Wellness infused supervision may help CITs foster personal wellness and mitigate deleterious effects of helping. This investigation examined connections related to counselor-in-training wellness and professional quality of life during an internship-level supervision course across a wellness and control section.
Methods: A quasi-experimental design was piloted, comparing a wellness-focused supervision internship section with a non-wellness control group supervision internship section during one academic semester. Participants included 15 clinical mental health CITs (9 experimental; 6 control), who were …

Eat Well, Be Well: Basic Needs Initiative's Online Hub For Nutrition Education, Misha Moseley
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Basic Needs Initiative at California State University, Monterey Bay is a department that provides students with food, housing, and wellness resources. Over half of the university's students experience food insecurity, and over 85% use non-academic resources to learn about nutrition. This project adds a dietary health section to the department’s website to increase students’ access to nutrition education. It addresses the micro-level agency problem that too few students eat a healthy, balanced diet. Unhealthy eating is a risk factor for food insecurity, so the project indirectly addresses the macro-level health problem that too many college students in California experience food …

The Development Of An Assessment Plan For Wellness And Risk For Substance Use In Nurse Anesthesia Students, Tessa Friend, Lauren Zaleski
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) are at an increased risk for low levels of perceived wellness and substance use disorder (SUD) due to a multitude of factors. Disturbances in perceived wellness and SUD pose mental and physical risks to the student as an individual, and may have an impact on their academic and clinical performance. Designing an assessment plan for the evaluation of wellness and risk for substance use in the SRNA population may aid anesthesia program directors in identifying early warning signs, implementing wellness curricula tailored to their student’s unique needs, and evaluating the effectiveness of these wellness curricula …
