The Association Of Lower Medication Adherence And Increased Medical Spending, Ryan A. Fuchs Dec 2022

The Association Of Lower Medication Adherence And Increased Medical Spending, Ryan A. Fuchs

Capstone

Medical prescribing is a common occurrence in daily clinical practice. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2015-2016 45.8% of the U.S. population used prescription drugs in the past 30 days. (CDC, 2019) Although drug therapy can be effective in treating disease, full benefits are often not realized because many patients do not take their medications as prescribed. There is quite a bit of research out there about non-adherence to medication. Some studies focus on the financial impacts of non-adherence, but most of the studies examine the reasons for medication non-adherence. A gap exists in research about …

A Critical Review Of Medication Adherence In Hypertension: Barriers And Facilitators Clinicians Should Consider, Seyed Mehrdad Hamrahian, Omar H. Maarouf, Tibor Fülöp

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Hypertension is a global public health problem, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Impacting all human societies and socioeconomic strata, it remains the major modifiable risk factor for global burden of cardiovascular disease all-cause mortality and the leading cause of loss of disability-adjusted life years. Despite increased awareness, the rate of blood pressure control remains unsatisfactory, particularly in low-to middle-income countries. Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension is associated with worse adverse health outcomes. It includes both true resistant and pseudo-resistant hypertension, which requires out-of-office blood pressure monitoring to exclude white-coat effect and confirmation of adherence to the agreed recommended antihypertensive therapy. The …

Guidelines For Medication Education For Occupational Therapists, Jaclyn K. Schwartz

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Taking medications is a vital health management activity for people with chronic health conditions. These individuals must take their medications as prescribed to receive the intended benefits and minimize negative effects. Many people with chronic health conditions do not know essential information about their medications, which limits their ability to take their medications as prescribed. Occupational therapists regularly engage in client education to enhance performance of health management. When addressing medications, however, additional considerations are needed because of the highly regulated, interdisciplinary, and complex nature of this occupation. The purpose of this practice guideline is to describe the integration of …

The Role Of Alternative Payment Models In Pharmaceutical Services And Outcomes, Matthew G. Parker Jan 2022

The Role Of Alternative Payment Models In Pharmaceutical Services And Outcomes, Matthew G. Parker

All ETDs from UAB

A persistent challenge within the healthcare sector is balancing cost containment for health services and the quality of care associated with these services. This challenge has reinvigorated interest in alternative payment models (i.e., risk-sharing, shared savings, capitation), arrangements between payers and healthcare providers that structure reimbursement for services based on health outcomes. Although much research has assessed the association between these payment models and financial outcomes for medical services, there is a paucity of research that has likewise assessed pharmaceutical outcomes (i.e., electronic prescribing, evidence-based prescribing, medication adherence). The papers comprising this dissertation contribute to this limited body of research …
