Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) is a rare inherited skin malignancy with no causative treatment options. Reporting a 23-year-old woman with xeroderma pigmentosum who underwent several surgical tumor removals followed by further five procedures to apply tissue expander, facial resurfacing using full-thickness skin grafts with a donor from abdominal. The next series was tumor resection in the chin, forehead, nasal reconstruction, tumor removal on bilateral third digits, and defect closure. No recurrence after nine years of postoperative monitoring with an aesthetically acceptable result.

Problem: On-time first cases for operating rooms (OR) is a worldwide focus for improvement. OR delays have many adverse effects, including economic costs and patient and facility staff satisfaction.

Context: The site for this improvement project is a medium-sized hospital in Northern California. There are 12 ORs, with an average of 600-700 cases. Neurosurgery was the chosen specialty due to low on-time starts and long delay minutes. The focus was working with one OR to improve first case on-time starts by 20%.

Introduction: Surgery is the primary treatment for resectable, non-metastatic recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We explore the safety and oncologic benefit of intraoperative Cesium-131 (Cs-131) brachytherapy combined with salvage local and/or regional surgical resection.

Methods and materials: Findings were reported from a single arm multi-institutional prospective phase 1/2 trial involving surgery plus Cs-131 (surgery + Cs-131) treatment. The results of two retrospective cohorts-surgery alone and surgery plus intensity modulated radiation therapy (surgery + ReIMRT)-were also described. Included patients had recurrent HNSCC and radiation history. Safety, tumor re-occurrence, and survival were evaluated.

Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used in this study.

Methods: This study was conducted between January 2019 and June 2019 with 120 patients who were hospitalised in the surgical intensive care unit. This study reviews the resident caseload of an otolaryngology residency rural rotation in comparison with a traditional primary university-based urban location.

Methods: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case log system was used to review cases logged by residents during their rural rotations from July 2017 to December 2018. Problem: Unplanned, inpatient surgical patients were experiencing poor outcomes and dissatisfaction with their overall care. This surgical patient population also lacked communication from their healthcare teams with regard to plans of care throughout their hospital stays.

Context: This was a quality improvement project for the unplanned, inpatient surgical patient population in the Central Valley of California. Approximately 13% of this hospital’s surgical patients required post-surgical care in the inpatient units. These patients, according to unfavorable HCAHPS scores, experienced unsatisfying care and insufficient communication from their healthcare teams, including physicians and nurses.

Surgical destabilization of the stifle joint via cranial cruciate ligament desmotomy (CCLD) is a routine procedure for the study of osteoarthritis (OA). Traditionally performed in rats, rabbits, cats, and dogs, CCLD in sheep provides an opportunity to study the pathology and treatment of joint instability in a species whose stifle better represents the equivalent human femorotibial joint. Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms are rare and represent approximately 4% of all cystic pancreatic tumours, and predominately affect females. They have an excellent prognosis, however 10-15% of the patients show metastasis at the time of surgery or recurrence of tumour during follow-up after pancreatectomy. Surgical resection is the recommended treatment. We present a rare case of a 15-year-old female, with a pseudopapillary tumour of the pancreas which was diagnosed pre-operatively.

A chondroma is a slow-growing, benign cartilaginous tumor. When a chondroma occurs in soft tissue without any involvement of the surrounding bone, it is known as a soft tissue chondroma which is an especially rare type of malignancy that has a predilection for the hands and feet. A soft tissue chondroma originates from either the synovial sheath of long tendons, para-articular tissues, or paratendinous soft tissues. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and potentially serious complication following hip fracture surgery. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is used as an indicator of renal function. Several equations are commonly used to calculate eGFR. In the intervention group, families received electronic updates at 3 significant perioperative events during the procedure. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a nationwide shutdown of elective medical procedures. Upon resumption of services, preprocedure nasopharyngeal swab testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was introduced for all patients requiring surgical or other aerosol-generating procedures. We investigated preprocedure COVID-19 testing in one of the largest U.S. health systems. Patients included in this retrospective, observational study were asymptomatic and scheduled for a procedure or surgery. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for the adolescent population, and as such, should be addressed when adolescents have any contact with the healthcare system, including perioperative appointments. Although some surgical facilities screen patients with a history of suicide attempt or severe mental health conditions, many adolescents who have died by suicide do not have official mental health diagnoses or history of previous suicide attempt. Because of the impact surgery can have on mental health, each adolescent should be screened for suicide risk during pre-surgical consult appointments to assess suicide risk and take proper precautions, as needed. …
