Study Of Serum Microrna-21 And Alpha-Fetoprotein In Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Secondary To Viral Hepatitis, Ahmed A. Teima, Atef A. Ali, David M. Metry, Sally M. El-Hefnawy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective To evaluate the significance of plasma microRNA-21 (miR-21) level as a noninvasive marker for diagnosis and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and comparing the diagnostic accuracy of serum miR-21 with alpha-fetoprotein. Background In Egypt, HCC is the third most frequent cancer in men with more than 8000 new cases predicted. Early detection of HCC opens doors for various effective treatments such as surgical resection, radiofrequency ablation, and transplantation. Alterations of cancer tissue and circulating miRs have been shown in patients with HCC. Patients and methods This is a prospective study that was carried out at Cardiac and Digestive Institute, …

Study The Relation Of Protein S And Portal Vein Thrombosis In Patients With Liver Cirrhosis, Ahmed N. Talkhan, Ehab A Abdel Atty, El-Arab A. Ezz, Reem M. Elkholy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim was to investigate serum protein S (PS) levels in cirrhotic patients with portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Background PS is an important guardian in controlling thrombin generation and fibrinolysis, although the contribution of these properties to the anticoagulant functions of PS is still unclear. Patients and methods The present study was conducted on 90 subjects who were classified as follows: 36 cirrhotic patients without PVT, 34 cirrhotic patients with PVT, and 20 healthy persons as a control. The study was conducted in the period between December 2010 and March 2012. Complete blood picture, liver function tests, and renal …

Study Of Von Willebrand Factor As A Risk For Thrombotic Cerebrovascular Stroke In Cirrhotic Patients, Ayman A. Sakr, Hossam I. Mohammed, Khaled H. Afifi, Mai K. Abd El Khalek, Reham S. El Zaiat, Yousra A. Alghalban Oct 2021

Alghalban

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective This work aimed to assess the risk of von Willebrand factor (vWF) in ischemic stroke (IS) among cirrhotic versus noncirrhotic patients and its relation to IS severity and outcome. Background Liver cirrhosis is complicated by extensive hemostatic dysfunctions. vWF is found to be elevated and may expose these patients to thrombosis. Therefore, cirrhosis may be associated with bleeding or thrombotic events. Patients and methods This study included 22 cirrhotic patients without IS, 18 noncirrhotic patients with IS, 33 cirrhotic patients with IS (mixed group), and 20 healthy control. They were subjected to vWF measurement by ELISA, imaging (abdominal ultrasonography, …

Malnutrition And Liver Disease In A Developing Country, Asra Tus Saleha Siddiqui, Om Parkash, Syeda Amrah Hashmi Aug 2021

Malnutrition And Liver Disease In A Developing Country, Asra Tus Saleha Siddiqui, Om Parkash, Syeda Amrah Hashmi

Section of Gastroenterology

Malnutrition is a highly prevalent and under recognized condition in developing countries of South Asia. The presence of malnutrition causes a severe impact on patients with liver cirrhosis. The etiology of cirrhosis differs in the South Asian region compared to the West, with hepatitis B and C still being the leading causes and the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease increasing over time. Comorbid malnutrition worsens outcomes for cirrhosis patients. Urgent attention to address malnutrition is needed to improve patient outcomes. The etiology and pathophysiology of malnutrition in liver diseases is multifactorial, as reduction in liver function affects both macronutrients …

Assessment Of Serum Magnesium Level In Patients With Liver Cirrhosis, Atef A. Ali, Ayman A. Elgamal, Ayman M. Enab Mar 2021

Assessment Of Serum Magnesium Level In Patients With Liver Cirrhosis, Atef A. Ali, Ayman A. Elgamal, Ayman M. Enab

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim was to assess serum magnesium level in patients with liver cirrhosis. Background Cirrhosis is a chronic disease of the liver in which diffuse destruction and regeneration of hepatic parenchymal cells and diffuse increase in connective tissue result in disorganization of the lobular architecture. Micronutrients play a significant role in liver diseases. Patients and methods A case–control study was conducted on 60 patients with liver cirrhosis who were classified into the following groups. Group I included 60 patients with liver cirrhosis. They were classified according to the Child-Pugh class into: group Ia which included 20 Child-Pugh A cirrhotic …

INTRODUCTION

The obesity epidemic is a growing public health concern. In addition to the already known complications and comorbidities associated with obesity, data suggest that obesity is an independent risk factor for the development of liver disease.1,2 However, there is a paucity of data regarding the clinical correlation of obesity and cirrhosis in a predominantly Hispanic population of South Texas. The aim of this systematic literature review is to investigate the prevalence of cirrhosis stratified by obesity in Hispanic populations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed was used to perform a thorough literature search. The terms liver cirrhosis and obesity were …
