Publications and Research

Background: This study aimed to evaluate sickle-cell disease (SCD) treatment patterns and economic burden among patients prescribed hydroxyurea (HU) in the US, through claims data.

Methods: SCD patients with pharmacy claims for HU were selected from the Medicaid Analytic Extracts (MAX) from January 1, 2009 - December 31, 2013. The first HU prescription during the identification period was defined as the index date and patients were required to have had continuous medical and pharmacy benefits for ≥6 months baseline and 12 months follow-up periods. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, health care utilization, and costs were examined, and variables were …

Clinically Integrated Networks: The ‘Magic Pill’ For Improving The Quality Of Health Care?, Kaitlyn Ann Crosby Oct 2019

Clinically Integrated Networks: The ‘Magic Pill’ For Improving The Quality Of Health Care?, Kaitlyn Ann Crosby

Theses and Dissertations

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) served as a paradigm shift to reimburse physicians based on health outcomes or quality of care patients receive in relation to and conscious of the cost to provide care, rather than the traditional fee-for- service (FFS) system. To implement value-based care under the ACA, value-based care models (VBCM), such as patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) and accountable care organizations (ACO), were formed with the ultimate goal to advance quality of care. Among commercially insured populations, clinically integrated networks (CIN) have emerged as another type of VBCM.

Since CINs are the newest type of …

Dental Emergencies In The Current Health Care System, David Singleton, Nawar Shara, Phd Aug 2019

Dental Emergencies In The Current Health Care System, David Singleton, Nawar Shara, Phd

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

A huge problem in the current health system is that Oral care is not currently integrated into the overall health system, given the lack of dental coverage for underserved adults, and the insufficient amount of dentists available for individuals with dental coverage.

The lack of education regarding the importance of oral health and shortage in the number of dentists and dental coverage leads to an influx of patients with mild to severe dental problems at the emergency departments (EDs) across the country. Many studies conclude that by integrating oral health into the overall health system, there would an increase in …

Human Trafficking Education For Pre-Licensure Nursing Students: A Quality Improvement Project., Mollie Elizabeth Flowers Aug 2019

Human Trafficking Education For Pre-Licensure Nursing Students: A Quality Improvement Project., Mollie Elizabeth Flowers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery and a violation of human rights (Scanwell, Macdonald, Berger, & Boyer, 2018). An estimated 40.3 million individuals are being trafficked globally at any one time with 14,500 to 17,500 being trafficked within the United States annually (Polaris, 2018; Mason et al., 2016; Richards, 2014). An estimated 87% of human trafficking victims were seen by health care professionals during the time they were being trafficked and went unrecognized. (Lederer & Wetzel, 2014). This project utilized the Plan– Do- Check -Act model for quality improvement. (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, n.d.). This project …

Audience Response Systems And Missingness Trends: Using Interactive Polling Systems To Gather Sensitive Health Information From Youth., Tammy Toscos, Michelle Drouin, Mindy Flanagan, Maria D. Carpenter, Connie Kerrigan, Colleen Carpenter, Cameron Mere Mba, Marcia Haaff Jul 2019

Audience Response Systems And Missingness Trends: Using Interactive Polling Systems To Gather Sensitive Health Information From Youth., Tammy Toscos, Michelle Drouin, Mindy Flanagan, Maria D. Carpenter, Connie Kerrigan, Colleen Carpenter, Cameron Mere Mba, Marcia Haaff

Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND: The widespread availability and cost-effectiveness of new-wave software-based audience response systems (ARSs) have expanded the possibilities of collecting health data from hard-to-reach populations, including youth. However, with all survey methods, biases in the data may exist because of participant nonresponse.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (1) examine the extent to which an ARS could be used to gather health information from youths within a large-group school setting and (2) examine individual- and survey-level response biases stemming from this Web-based data collection method.

METHODS: We used an ARS to deliver a mental health survey to 3418 youths …

A Provider-Driven Approach To Preventative Oral Care In Nursing Home Facilities, Molly Anderson, Brandon Mccrossin, Kary Franchetti, Ruth Hanselman, Suneela Nayak, Stephen Tyzik, Amy Sparks Jul 2019

A Provider-Driven Approach To Preventative Oral Care In Nursing Home Facilities, Molly Anderson, Brandon Mccrossin, Kary Franchetti, Ruth Hanselman, Suneela Nayak, Stephen Tyzik, Amy Sparks

Operational Transformation

Oral care is an essential part of preventative medicine as it minimizes risk for pneumonias and other infections. In nursing home settings, often oral health care is not routinely provided due to a number of issues. A health care system that either owns or contracts nursing home facilities initiated a performance improvement plan to address this patient care concern.

The first goal of this project was to reduce the variation in oral care between nursing home facilities within the system. The second goal was 100% of their patients will have one oral health care exam documented in EPIC once a …
