Splenectomy is a common surgical procedure performed in millions of people worldwide. Epidemiologic data show that splenectomy is followed by infectious (sepsis) and non-infectious complications, with unknown mechanisms. In order to explore the role of the non-coding transcripts involved in these complications, we analysed a panel of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs), which were previously reported to be deregulated in sepsis, in the plasma of splenectomized patients. MiR-223 was overexpressed immediately and late after splenectomy, while miR-146a was overexpressed immediately after splenectomy, returning latter to basal levels; and miR-16, miR-93, miR-26a and miR-26b were overexpressed only late after splenectomy, suggesting similarities with …

Gene-annotation enrichment is a common method for utilizing ontology-based annotations in gene and gene-product centric knowledgebases. Effective utilization of these annotations requires inferring semantic linkages by tracing paths through edges in the ontological graph, referred to as relations. However, some relations are semantically problematic with respect to scope, necessitating their omission or modification lest erroneous term mappings occur. To address these issues, we created the Gene Ontology Categorization Suite, or GOcats—a novel tool that organizes the Gene Ontology into subgraphs representing user-defined concepts, while ensuring that all appropriate relations are congruent with respect to scoping semantics. Abstract

Individuals having Genetic Thrombophilia pose a higher risk of having a thrombotic event. It is crucial to determine these gene variants to prevent a possible episode of thromboembolism. With the current PCR method, it involves individual processing of DNA isolation, amplification, and detection using three (3) different instruments resulting to an increased turnaround time of 5 to 7 days and additional staff utilization. It is performed by repetitive manual sample pipetting and preparation of reagent master mixes in small vials. Objective To study the possible association of genetic polymorphism of survivin gene (rs9904341) with the risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) in Egyptian patients and explore the mechanisms of survivin polymorphism in the development of CRC. Background Survivin gene is an inhibitor of apoptosis, plays an important role in cell cycle regulation, and may be involved in the development and progression of cancer. Structurally, the human survivin gene comprises four exons and three introns spanning 14.7 kb, which encodes a 16.5 kDa protein. While the role of mitochondrial metabolism in controlling T-lymphocyte activation and function is becoming more clear, the specifics of how mitochondrial redox signaling contributes to T-lymphocyte regulation remains elusive. Here, we examined the global effects of elevated mitochondrial superoxide (O2-) on T-lymphocyte activation using a novel model of inducible manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) knock-out. Loss of MnSOD led to specific increases in mitochondrial O2- with no evident changes in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxynitrite (ONOO-), or copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) levels. Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is a rare but life-threatening, genetic condition that can manifest when a patient is exposed to certain inhalation agents used in anesthesia as well as the depolarizing muscle relaxant succinylcholine (Rosenberg, Pollock, Schiemann, Bulger, & Stowell, 2015, p. 1). MH can develop during or after a surgical procedure and if left untreated, can cause major organ system damage and death (Seifert, Wahr, Pace, Cochrane, & Bagnola, 2014, p. 189). Creating awareness of this rare genetic condition allows for quicker interventions in reversing MH.
