In patients with COPD, distress is significantly prevalent and can have adverse psychological and physiological effects. Background: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are chronic diseases associated with health disparities in Douglas County, Nebraska and in the United States. Currently there is a lack of information describing the impact of environmental factors in Nebraska on the burden of emergency department (ED) visits or hospitalizations related to these chronic respiratory (CR) diseases. The aim of this study was to determine if there is an association between the numbers of seasonal viral respiratory (SVR)- related ED visits, outdoor air pollutants, aeroallergens, or meteorological factors on the number of CR- related ED visits in Douglas County, Nebraska.

However, the contribution of the adaptive immune system is not well characterized in pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by chronic hypoxia (CH). Inflammatory cells, through various mechanisms, have the capability to increase pulmonary vascular resistance in various disease states. Introduction The extrapulmonary manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients are similar to symptoms of frailty, a geriatric syndrome. This study was designed to identify the relation between frailty and patient outcomes during a COPD exacerbation. Methods This retrospective study identified 10,235 patients hospitalized for COPD exacerbation, as well as 16 laboratory tests included in a frailty index that have been linked to frailty. Patients were divided into less frail (0-8 positive laboratory values) and more frail (9-16 positive laboratory values) groups. Purpose: This Quality Improvement (QI) project evaluated the impact of an existing education-based program for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and its effect on 30-day readmission rates in one hospital in rural Missouri.

Method: A retrospective chart review was completed on 493 patients with an inclusive diagnosis of COPD from June 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019, using a cohort study design and a two-sample t-test analysis. Additional variables were analyzed to determine if there were predictive factors of an elevated risk of readmission.

To identify the molecular mechanisms to allow for targeted therapies for COPD, we developed a high-fidelity mouse model of chronic lung inflammation using the natural rodent pathogen Sendai virus (SeV). While nucleic acid-sensing pattern recognition receptors are important for innate immune responses to viral pathogens, there have been few studies investigating their role in the context of chronic disease. In-home health education improves health equity for low-income and minority populations with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Yet, outcomes of educational interventions are limited by poor housing conditions. Federal weatherization programs represent a promising source of funding for home repairs. Prevalence of COPD in the United States is rising, yet many people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) diagnoses do not have diagnoses. In Vermont 18% of adults are current smokers and 27% are former smokers. The lack of provider and nurse training regarding indications, mechanism, interpretation and benefit of spirometry have limited it's use. Spirometry is recommended for both asthma & COPD diagnoses and management, and may provide better disease management.
