Background: Pediatric heart transplant recipients are at risk for increased left ventricular (LV) diastolic stiffness. However, the noninvasive evaluation of LV stiffness has remained elusive in this population. The objective of this study was to compare novel echocardiographic measures of LV diastolic stiffness versus gold-standard measures derived from pressure-volume loop (PVL) analysis in pediatric heart transplant recipients.

Methods: Patients undergoing left heart catheterization were prospectively enrolled. PVLs were obtained via conductance. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of conducting a larger randomized controlled trial comparing the proportion of adolescents using a levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG IUD) at six months postpartum when it is inserted immediately after vaginal delivery (within 10 minutes after placental expulsion) compared to insertion four to six weeks postpartum. Pregnant adolescents (14 to 19 years) who desired a LNG IUD for postpartum contraception were randomized to insertion of the LNG IUD either within 10 minutes of delivery of the placenta or at 4-6 weeks postpartum. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) on lipid metabolism and to determine whether reduced statin exposure during ESL therapy has clinical consequences.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We conducted a post-hoc analysis of pooled data for serum lipids (laboratory values) from three phase III, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of adjunctive ESL therapy (400, 800, or 1200 mg once daily) in patients with treatment-refractory partial-onset seizures. Changes from baseline in serum lipid levels were analyzed according to use of statins and/or enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (EIAEDs) during the baseline period.

Although Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder shows (ADHD) male predominance, females are significantly impaired and exhibit additional comorbid disorders during adolescence. However, no empirical work has examined the influence of cyclical fluctuating steroids on ADHD symptoms in women. The present study examined estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), and testosterone (T) associations with ADHD symptoms across the menstrual cycle in regularly-cycling young women (N=32), examining trait impulsivity as a moderator. Women completed a baseline measure of trait impulsivity, provided saliva samples each morning, and completed an ADHD symptom checklist every evening for 35 days. Children with brain tumors (CBT) are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes compared to the general population, in which birth weight is a risk factor for these diseases. The glutamatergic neurotransmitter system may play an important role in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This 5-week, open-label, single-blind, placebo-controlled study reports the safety, pharmacokinetics and responsiveness of the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) activator fasoracetam (NFC-1), in 30 adolescents, age 12-17 years with ADHD, harboring mutations in mGluR network genes. Mutation status was double-blinded. A single-dose pharmacokinetic profiling from 50-800 mg was followed by a single-blind placebo at week 1 and subsequent symptom-driven dose advancement up to 400 mg BID for 4 weeks. Objectives

Methodologically, to assess the feasibility of participant recruitment and retention, as well as missing data in studying mental disorder among children newly diagnosed with chronic physical conditions (ie, multimorbidity). Substantively, to examine the prevalence of multimorbidity, identify sociodemographic correlates and model the influence of multimorbidity on changes in child quality of life and parental psychosocial outcomes over a 6-month follow-up.

Background: The Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN) research program aims to defeat the rising HIV epidemic among adolescents and young adults in the United States.

Objective: This study aims to optimize cross-study analyses and comparisons of standardized measures (variables) collected in the ATN. Methods: Guidelines were developed for harmonizing measures to be collected across ATN studies.

Children and adolescents have the tendency to develop osteomyelitis in metaphyseal sinusoids because turbulent blood flow increases the probability of bacterial growth. Osteomyelitis in children is frequently misdiagnosed owing to lack of symptoms and specific findings from laboratory tests. Without rapid antibiotic treatment of osteomyelitis, complications such as subperiosteal abscesses may occur. We describe a 13-year-old boy who underwent irrigation and debridement to treat a subperiosteal abscess of the right distal radius and ulna, caused by acute osteomyelitis. Chronic vascular occlusion in the upper extremity can result from repetitive trauma, atherosclerosis, proximal embolic events, hypercoagulable states, and systemic diseases such as collagen vascular disease and vasculitis. Considerable functional impairment can result from these maladies; however, sometimes the condition develops slowly with minimal effect on the patient. We describe a 16-year-old soccer player with slow-progressing elbow pain and loss of range in motion caused by brachial artery vasculitis and resultant brachial arterial stenosis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study investigated pediatric cancer (0-19 years old) age adjusted incidence rates (AAR) in Nebraska using the Nebraska Cancer Registry. OBJECTIVES: To examine (1) the association between household socioeconomic status (SES) and whether a household spends money on cigarettes and (2) socioeconomic variations in proportion of total household expenditure spent on cigarettes among smoking households.

METHODS: We pooled data from six consecutive years, 2010-2015, of the Consumer Expenditure Interview Survey. Background: Given higher sexual victimization and greater alcohol use among bisexual women, a critical public health challenge is to understand within-group variation that may heighten or explain these associations in bisexual women. Objectives: The present study tested a moderated-mediation model in which sexual coercion was hypothesized to be associated with alcohol-related consequences via drinking to cope motives in self-identified bisexual women who reported at least occasional binge drinking. Fractures of the tibial tuberosity are uncommon injuries in adolescents, representing an estimated 0.4% to 2.7% of all pediatric fractures. Most of these injuries occur in young, active males commonly between the ages of 12 to 17 years. Sports, particularly those involving jumping or sudden starts and stops, are most often implicated. West Virginia has the 8^th highest rate of adolescent pregnancy in the United States and the rate in Wayne County is significantly higher. Adolescent pregnancies cause negative health outcomes for both the baby and the mother. Adolescent mothers are at an increased risk of anemia, preeclampsia, and preterm labor and babies born to adolescent mothers are more likely to have a low birth weight and to have cognitive impairment. Background: The HPV vaccination has consistently had lower adherence rates than the goal set by Healthy People 2020. The Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices (ACIP) now recommends that children (both male and female) 11 to 12 years of age should start to receive the HPV vaccine before exposure to the virus.
