The Efficacy Of Microphototherapy With A Medlight Cupcubegrimed Device In Psoriatic Patients With Localized Lesions, Nesli̇han Yildirim, Gül Erki̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease. To reduce side effects associated with current treatment modalities, new treatment methods are required. Some clinicians have begun to use microphototherapy to treat psoriatic patients with a limited number of lesions (lesions affecting <10% of the body surface area). Materials and methods: Microphototherapy is indicated in patients whose lesions persist despite systemic and topical treatment or when such treatment is contraindicated. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of microphototherapy in psoriasis patients with localized lesions. Patients in this unblinded and prospective study were treated three times a week for 50 sessions using a MedLight CupCUBE Grimed microphototherapy device that emits an ultraviolet B (UVB) spectrum. Results: Forty-five lesions in 23 psoriatic patients were treated. Treatment outcome was evaluated based on the Psoriasis Severity Index (PSI). PSI scores decreased significantly during the treatment. Conclusion: The MedLight CupCUBE Grimed microphototherapy device was effective for the treatment of psoriasis patients with localized lesions. The device can administer UVB radiation to involved regions while protecting uninvolved regions and minimizing radiation dose. However, having to be administered by experienced technicians and the long time required for each treatment session are disadvantages of the technique.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) is a rare and benign mesenchymal proliferative breast lesion. Our aim is to review the clinical and radiological features of PASH and define a standard approach for its diagnosis and management. Materials and methods: Clinical records of 35 consecutive patients with PASH were retrospectively reviewed between 2009 and 2015. Patients with clinically or radiologically detected mass and patients who underwent biopsy for other indications and were diagnosed incidentally were included in the study. Results: There were 34 female patients and one male patient with gynecomastia. Twenty-three patients had palpable masses, and 16 of them were …

Background/aim: Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a very rare thyroid malignancy. It should be diagnosed and treated immediately and accurately. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic methods and treatment results for patients with PTL.Materials and methods: We retrospectively evaluated the records of 11 patients with PTL from 2009 to 2015, diagnosed at our institute. Age, sex, stage, histopathologic type, presence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diagnostic methods, treatment types, and recurrence were examined. Results: Six patients were female, 5 were male, and the median age of the patients was 61 years (range: 15-76 years). All patients had a large palpable mass in …

A Review Of Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension With New Guidelines, Serdar Kula, Ayhan Pektaş Jan 2017

A Review Of Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension With New Guidelines, Serdar Kula, Ayhan Pektaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This study aims to review pediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH) by comparing the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Respiratory Society (ERS), the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the European Pediatric Pulmonary Vascular Disease Network (EPPVDN). All three sets of guidelines define PH as having a mean pulmonary artery pressure of ≥25 mmHg and accept the validity of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system. Every child with a high index of suspicion for PH should undergo an initial work-up of chest X-rays, electrocardiography, and echocardiography. The AHA/ATS guidelines emphasize the necessity of cardiac catheterization and …

Background/aim: Invasive fungal infection (IFI) causes morbidity and mortality among patients with hematological malignancies. We evaluated the incidence and treatment characteristics of IFIs between October 2012 and December 2013. Materials and methods: Patients who received chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation were retrospectively evaluated. Fungal infections were classified according to EORTC criteria. Results: Prophylaxis and antifungal therapy were given in 30.5% and 23.6% of 522 chemotherapy courses, respectively. The incidence of proven/probable IFI was 6.7%. The incidence of IFI among patients who received prophylaxis was significantly higher than among those who did not receive it (11.3% vs. 4.6%, P = 0.005). There …
