Cause For Question: Risk And Postmodern Panic In The Vaccine Safety Debate, Marygrace Trifilio Dec 2016

Cause For Question: Risk And Postmodern Panic In The Vaccine Safety Debate, Marygrace Trifilio

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the thoughts and feelings of non-vaccinating parents in America and argues that contemporary vaccine refusal results from overwhelming information saturation in the Internet age. Non-vaccinating parents express distrust of competing scientific research and call for a return to a more natural, toxin-free lifestyle.

The number of patients seeking complementary health approaches combined with conventional treatments has grown considerably over the past decade. The current authors have previously described how an integrative medicine department was initiated and implemented at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. This article discusses how the integrative medicine department was expanded to include naturopathic medicine. This expansion was implemented because patients were taking herbs and supplements without their doctors' knowledge. This situation can be dangerous, especially for patients with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy, as various herbs and supplements can interact with treatment for these patients. Because the State of Michigan …

Evidence-Based Integrative Approaches In Palliative Care: Challenges And Opportunities, Leila Kozak Phd May 2016

Evidence-Based Integrative Approaches In Palliative Care: Challenges And Opportunities, Leila Kozak Phd

Palliative Care Institute

Palliative care providers are increasingly seeking non-pharmacological supportive interventions to increase comfort and quality of life, which has led to the integration of complementary therapies within palliative care environments. This emerging field of integrative care brings wonderful opportunities as well as challenges. Among the opportunities, the ability to actively engage family caregivers in comfort care modalities, the ability to enhance comfort regardless of the care environment, and self-care opportunities for caregivers and professional staff to decrease stress and burnout. Among the challenges, the lack of education for professional staff regarding complementary therapies may deter professionals from recommending or facilitating access …

Older Adults And The Availability Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Assisted Living Facilities: A Critical Examination, Chris Pommerenke, Julie Poupore May 2016

Older Adults And The Availability Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Assisted Living Facilities: A Critical Examination, Chris Pommerenke, Julie Poupore

Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Research Papers

Over the next two decades, the population of adults over age 55 will undergo exponential growth. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is popular, and offers pain management, increased mobility, a sense of control over health, improved health overall despite physical frailty, personal responsibility over health and health care, and preservation of good health. We identified and interviewed decision-makers from eight assisted living facilities in two Twin Cities counties regarding what types of CAM they offer onsite and why. Quantitative and qualitative data, were analyzed to describe CAM therapies and identify themes. Themes emerged around access to CAM, barriers to …

The Changing Roles And Reputations Of Dais In Rural Uttarakhand: An Investigation Into The Maternal Health Services Of Villages In Okhalkanda Block In Nainital, Jenna Davis Apr 2016

The Changing Roles And Reputations Of Dais In Rural Uttarakhand: An Investigation Into The Maternal Health Services Of Villages In Okhalkanda Block In Nainital, Jenna Davis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The dai, once a prominent figure in Indian maternal health, now faces marginalization as the government of India adopts the goal of universal institutional delivery. Under pressure from international discourse that Skilled Birth Attendants (SBAs) were more effective at lowering Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) than Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) like dais (World Health Organization), dai training was discontinued and left in the hands of NGOs, while concurrently women and ASHAs were monetarily incentivized for every institutional birth (Park, 419). Yet in rural, isolated, or hilly areas like Okhalakanda block in Uttarakhand, institutional delivery is a long way from universal—only …

Introduction:

Recent increase in measles cases has sparked vaccination controversy.

Naturopathic physicians (NDs) have been recognized as primary care providers by VT since 2012.

It is not well understood how NDs address vaccination with patients.

Our goal was to determine how Vermont NDs address vaccines and preventative care with their patients.

Attitudes Toward Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Miranda Lea Cobb Jan 2016

Attitudes Toward Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Miranda Lea Cobb

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) usage has increased throughout the years, as many people are becoming interested in using less conventional interventions for common illnesses. As a whole, CAM encompasses any practice used to treat an illness or disorder that does not fall under the category of traditional medicine. CAM interventions not only treat the physical aspects of health, but as clinicians are beginning to realize, these interventions may also be effective in treating psychological problems, most notably anxiety and depression. This research focused on attitudes toward CAM for psychological disorders. I examined participants’ attitudes about the use of CAM …

Childhood Vaccine Perceptions And Practices Among Naturopathic Physicians, Katherine Bloom Whitman Jan 2016

Childhood Vaccine Perceptions And Practices Among Naturopathic Physicians, Katherine Bloom Whitman

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Purpose: Parental decisions to vaccinate their children may be impacted by the advice of health care providers practicing complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Available literature suggests an association between vaccine delay or refusal and CAM use, decreased vaccination status of naturopathic patients, and increased vaccine hesitancy among naturopathic students. Some naturopathic physicians state that their approach towards discussions about childhood vaccinations may support families in choosing partial vaccination over complete refusal, ultimately contributing to an overall increase in vaccinations.

Methods: Using a modified Health Belief Model as a theoretical framework, this online survey of naturopathic physicians assessed childhood vaccine-related perceptions …
