Increasing shortages of primary care physicians has resulted in the use of family nurse practitioners for staffing of rural Emergency Departments (ED) throughout the United States. Although the majority of these Family Nurse Practitioners have not been formally trained in emergency medicine, they are placed in the role. The specific aim of this study is to examine if using telemedicine in the rural emergency department will improve patient outcomes, decrease transfers, and decrease mortality. Sexual minority individuals are a vulnerable population. Historically this has led to worse access to care and worse health outcomes compared to heterosexual individuals; this can be addressed through changes to practice. Patient satisfaction has also been a health care focus in recent years for all patients. This project examined patient satisfaction in a small university-associated primary care center and compared patient satisfaction scores for sexual minorities to heterosexual respondents. This was conducted after a series of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) educational initiatives with center staff. A total of 73 individuals chose to participate. The World Bank rates the United States last amongst developed countries for maternal mortality, with 14 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to Canada and the Netherlands with 7 deaths per 100,000 live births, and the UK with 9 per 100,000 live births. This paper argues that these deaths are strongly linked to excessive use of Cesarean sections, resulting from increased access to technology, and explores the attendant medicalization of childbirth in the United States. This project is focused on quality improvement in patient satisfaction with regard to side effect management after oncology patient education. The global aim of this project is to improve oncology-specific patient education through the development of an evidenced-based educational binder to be given to patients in a hospital outpatient infusion center and used as an educational guide for nursing staff. Sepsis is a serious concern of key healthcare stakeholders due to high incidence, mortality, and cost. The objectives of this evidence-based project were to 1) identify potential sepsis patients early during the emergency department (ED) triage process and 2) implement Sepsis Order Sets. Kotter’s change model and the Stetler model of evidence-based practice guided this project. An extensive literature search was undertaken to find best practice evidence regarding care of sepsis patients. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characteristically the result of modifiable risk factors, impacting the health and well being of all ethnic backgrounds across the lifespan. Research has indicated that despite the many risk factors associated with T2D, alterations in dietary macronutrient composition can lead to improvements in disease management and resultant complications. The Joint Commission (TJC) sets standards to assist healthcare organizations in improving performance. The hospital for which this project was developed did not meet national TJC benchmarks for patient satisfaction and nurse retention. Based on direct observation, discussion with staff, and results of the Multifactorial Leadership Questionnaire given to 39 staff nurses before this project was chosen, evidence suggested that the leadership style of the charge nurses was transactional, which is less effective than transformational leadership (TFL). In 1999, the Institute of Medicine released its report on building a safer health system. Since then, safety in patient care has become a paramount interest. Given the growing support for increasing patient safety, simulation training has become a common part of novice nurses' orientation program. This simulation training is designed to mimic situations in the acute care setting where novice nurses can practice in a patient safe environment. In 2013, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers System (HCAHPS), a national, independent metric of patient satisfaction, revealed room for improvement at a teaching hospital in the southeastern section of the United States. This project reports the development and validation of a Bedside Shift Report (BSR) policy, practice guidelines, and associated documentation. Several initiatives, models, and theories informed thinking about this project.
