The development of novel and efficient mixing methods is important for optimizing the efficiency of many biological and chemical processes. Tuning the physical and performance properties of nucleic acid-based nanoparticles is one such example known to be strongly affected by mixing efficiency. The characteristics of DNA nanoparticles (such as size, polydispersity, ζ-potential, and gel shift) are important to ensure their therapeutic potency, and new methods to optimize these characteristics are of significant importance to achieve the highest efficacy. Lyophilization is a common method used to preserve pharmaceutical and biological products. Accurately measuring temperature during the three stages of lyophilization: freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying, is important to ensure product consistency and to reduce operating costs. Wireless temperature sensors were evaluated to determine if temperature is monitored accurately and to determine if wireless temperature sensors offer advantages over traditional temperature measurement technologies. These sensors contain three capacitors to monitor temperature as the solvent is sublimated. A Millrock Technology REVO lyophilizer was used for testing. Production and isolation of proteins are difficult, costly and time-consuming processes. The aim of this project is for the development of plasmids, which allow for streamlined production and isolation of proteins. To allow for modular insertion of varying segments of DNA we are using ‘recursive directional ligation by plasmid reconstruction’. This technique uses type II restriction endonucleases, which cut downstream from their recognition site allowing multiple insertions without losing a restriction site. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a WHO grade IV brain tumor. These tumors are highly proliferative, infiltrative, necrotic, angiogenic, and resistant to apoptosis. One major characteristic of GBM is the overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which leads to cell growth and proliferation when activated. GBM is very difficult to treat due to its location, heterogeneity, and invasiveness; an effective treatment is therefore needed. The use of flavonoids, which are natural compounds found in many fruits and vegetables, has been studied in the treatment of many different tumor types. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are commonly prescribed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to manage seizures, manage behavior, and stabilize mood. Though research has been done on the effects of antiepileptic medications in patients with epilepsy, little study has been done on the persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities population. After surveying IDD patients with a history and current use of AEDs on osteoprotective behaviors, we were unable to use SPSS due to incomplete surveys and low sample sizes. Antioxidants are important dietary components which defend against oxidative damage by scavenging the oxidant by-products. Objective: To determine if andrographolide (AND) impacts the pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine (CBZ).

Background: CBZ is an anticonvulsant medication that is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. AND is an over-the-counter medication that is common in Eastern cultures to treat inflammation and is a CYP enzyme inhibitor. Because CBZ is metabolized in the liver by these specific CYP enzymes, coadministration of andrographolide and CBZ could result in a herb-drug interaction. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), sometimes referred to as lactic acid dehydrogenase, is an enzyme that is found in the cytoplasm of almost all living cells. It converts lactate and NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) to pyruvate and NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydrogen), and it can also catalyze the reverse reaction. Heart muscle is highly oxygenated at all times; therefore, LDH catalyzes the reaction in the direction to form NADH and pyruvate, which is used in the Citric Acid Cycle to make energy for the cell via aerobic cellular respiration. Is Androgen Excess Masked In Alopecia Areata Patients: A Retrospective Data Analysis Of 1,587 Patients, G. Cheyana Ranasinghe, Melissa Piliang, Wilma Bergfeld

Studies on the pathophysiology and comorbidities associated with alopecia areata (AA) are limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of androgen excess in AA and its subtypes, in relation to demographics and comorbidities. Medical records of 1,587 Patchy AA, AT, AU, and ophiasis patients seen in the Department of Dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio between 2005 and 2015 were reviewed. Out of this cohort, 226 patients met the inclusion criteria. There is evidence that patients with AA had significantly greater prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than the general population (p<0.001). Androgen excess was identified in 42.5% (n=96) of the 226 patients with AA or any subtype (p<0.001). The androgen excess group was significantly more likely to present with irregular menses, hirsutism, adult acne, PCOS, and/or ovarian cysts (p<0.001). This study was limited by being retrospective. Our study demonstrated that AA is associated with androgen excess.

Objective: Pediatric patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure are often on a long term aspirin regimen which can complicate perioperative management. In high risk procedures such as adenotonsillectomy, hemorrhage can be a significant complication and aspirin use may increase the risk. There is a need for evidence-based protocol on how to manage aspirin intake in the perioperative period for Fontan patients. We report the case of a patient with Fontan palliation who underwent adenotonsillectomy and presented with postoperative hemorrhage.
