Lack of activities for dogs, that is, decreased body motion and lack of opportunities to exercise, can cause dogs to become overweight. Swimming is one of the best physical exercises for a dog that has been approved by a veterinary doctor, and it provides a form of supported exercise. Almost all the muscles are required for the movement that involves improving strength, working the cardiovascular and respiratory system, and increasing the metabolic rate withoutimpact on joints. One interesting aspect of swimming is its ability for weight and serum lipid control. The effect of frequency-controlled swimming activity on a dog’s weight …

Immunophenotyping Of Cutaneous Extramedullary Plasmacytoma In Two Dogs, Chutchai Piewbang, Sirintra Sirivisoot, Sitthichok Lacharoje, Anudep Rungsipipat, Somporn Techangamsuwan

Skin biopsied tissues from two dogs, initially diagnosed as hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma (HHS) by histopathology, were immunostained with a series of antibodies against lambda light chains, kappa light chains, multiple myeloma oncoprotein 1 (MUM-1), CD-3, paired box 5 (PAX-5), E-cadherin and lysozyme. Heteroduplex polymerase chain reaction for antigen receptor rearrangements (hPARR) was additionally performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues to rule out lymphomas from histiocytomas. Results showed that both cases were immunopositive for lambda light chains, MUM-1, PAK-5 and lysozyme, indicating a diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP). Moreover, negative PCR result provided additional evidence confirming the diagnosis. Even though hPARR …

Diagnosis Of Pharyngeal Sialocele In A Dog By Ct Scan : A Case Report, Sekkarin Ploypetch, Nan Choisunirachon, Chanin Kalpravidh Jun 2016

Diagnosis Of Pharyngeal Sialocele In A Dog By Ct Scan : A Case Report, Sekkarin Ploypetch, Nan Choisunirachon, Chanin Kalpravidh

A 7-year-old, 10 kg male poodle dog was presented at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, with the clinical signs of chronic coughing, bad deglutition and severe respiratory distress. On oral examination, a large mass arisen from the throat was found. Because the skull-cervical radiographs revealed only a large soft tissue pharyngeal mass which were difficult to indicate the mass types and the tissue invasiveness, the computed tomography (CT) was subsequently applied. The CT result showed that the mass was an encapsulated hypoattenuation mass (2.5 x 4.3 x 2.4 cm) at the right pharyngeal area without any adjacent soft tissue invasions. …

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (Aptt) In Dogs Tested By In-House Crude Cephalin From Canine Brain, Sarawut Yama, Am Chaimongkhol, Somsak Channoi, Sakhorn Pornprasert, Wanna Suriyasathaporn Mar 2016

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (Aptt) In Dogs Tested By In-House Crude Cephalin From Canine Brain, Sarawut Yama, Am Chaimongkhol, Somsak Channoi, Sakhorn Pornprasert, Wanna Suriyasathaporn

This research aimed to identify the reference value of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) in normal dogs using crude cephalin prepared in-house from canine brain, and to examine its efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors. A total of 105 blood samples were collected from normal dogs between January-May 2010. The APTT value was found to be 10.43-19.08 seconds and significantly correlated with the APTT value of a test using a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9923, p < 0.001). On testing the reagent’s efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors by using cryopoor plasma, it was discovered that the APTT value ranged from 24.50 to 33.44 seconds, and the mean value of the APTT by means of cryopoor plasma was significantly greater than that of normal dogs (p < 0.001). The aforementioned APTT value significantly correlated with that obtained by means of a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9984, p < 0.001). From this research, it can be confirmed that in-house crude cephalin can be substituted for commercial crude cephalin. Besides, the obtained reference range can further be applied in veterinary hematology laboratory.

Association Between Cephalexin Administration And Emergence Of Methicillin-Resistant Coagulase-Positive Staphylococci (Mrcops) In Dogs, Punpichaya Fungwithaya, Pattrarat Chanchaithong, Nathita Phumthanakorn, Passana Muaungkong, Pitikarn Bumpenpol, Mutchamon Kaewparuehaschai, Chanwit Tribudharat, Nuvee Prapasarakul Mar 2016

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The potential transmission of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) between dogs and human has been noted as of potential public health concern. The current study aimed to determine the emergence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) in dogs after oral administration of cephalexin. Skin swabs from 38 dogs without a history of antibiotic exposure were collected before drug administration (pre-treatment dogs) and during drug administration within one month (treatment dogs). A total of 196 CoPS were isolated from the nose, perineum and skin lesions. Fewer MRCoPS were isolated from the pre-treatment dogs (7.89%) than from the treatment dogs (p<0.001). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) schleiferi subsp. coagulans (MRSSc) were only recovered from the treatment dogs, whereas methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) were found in both groups. Overall, a high incidence of MRSP was found since the first week after administration. The nose and perineum were confirmed as the most common site of carriage of MRCoPS rather than the skin lesions. In conclusion, the oral cephalexin administration was associated with the emergence of MRCoPS on dog skin, a potential source of contamination to humans.

Evaluation Of Pain And Prostate Volume Of Dogs Treated With Intra-Prostatic Injection Of Botulinum Toxin Type A, Pintira Thiangthientham, Kaywalee Chatdarong, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan Mar 2016

Evaluation Of Pain And Prostate Volume Of Dogs Treated With Intra-Prostatic Injection Of Botulinum Toxin Type A, Pintira Thiangthientham, Kaywalee Chatdarong, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Recently, alternative medical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using intra-prostatic injection of botulinum toxin type A (BT-A) has been reported in men and mice. However, in terms of animal welfare, it remains questionable when applied to clinical use. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of intra-prostatic injection of BT-A (Botox, Allergan, USA) in dogs. Six healthy intact males with no clinical signs of BPH received 100 units of BT-A by ultrasound-guided transabdominal intra-prostatic injection (50 units of each prostatic lobe). Pain scoring, evaluation of white blood cell counts, cortisol concentrations, and observation of urination behaviour were recorded before …
