The Effect Of Warm Up Music Compared To No Warm Up Music In Collegiate Anaerobic Athletes, Mallory Zappitelli May 2015

The Effect Of Warm Up Music Compared To No Warm Up Music In Collegiate Anaerobic Athletes, Mallory Zappitelli

Graduate Theses

Music is a very influential part of life. Music has been linked to psychological effects on exercise, however, there are mixed outcomes when it comes to its effects on exercise performance. The purpose of this study was to test music’s influence on anaerobic performance on the Wingate test. Subjects included 20 track and field athletes at a Division I school in South Carolina. The methodology used in this research was a blind randomized cross over design. Twenty college-age track and field athletes participated in two Wingate tests. Each involved a warm-up with music and a warm-up without music. The warm-up …

Student-Athletes’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Social Media, Emily Boissonneault May 2015

Student-Athletes’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Social Media, Emily Boissonneault

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes and beliefs of student athletes towards social media. To address this question, student athletes completed a survey focused specifically on: the image they present on social media profiles, content included, and their thoughts on the social media education provided by their athletic department. Student athlete (SA) responses were also compared to non-athletes (NA) for a better understanding of social media profiles. Frequencies showed strong similarities in a number of content shared or not shared, like humorous photos (SA 74.1% and NA 73.3%) and sexy photos (SA 82.4% and NA 82.6%). …

The Dangers Of The 'No Pain, No Gain' Mentality In Modern Exercise., Allison B. Costa May 2015

The Dangers Of The 'No Pain, No Gain' Mentality In Modern Exercise., Allison B. Costa

Senior Honors Projects

Abstract

Background: With the pressure to be fit in todays society the “no pain, no gain” exercise mentality has become a dangerous mindset among the average gym goer and the collegiate athlete. Studies assessing sports injuries in college-aged students in the United States indicate that the levels of sports injuries are rising. About 30% of all those injuries are a result of overuse (2015). Research is needed to identify the physical and mental factors that inhibit or promote these sports related injuries and provide steps that could be taken to prevent them.

Objective: To determine the top three injuries among …

Validity And Reliability Of A-Mode Ultrasound For Body Composition Assessment Of Lean, Division I Athletes, Dustin L. Cain May 2015

Validity And Reliability Of A-Mode Ultrasound For Body Composition Assessment Of Lean, Division I Athletes, Dustin L. Cain

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Athletes strive for a competitive advantage, and for some athletes building a lean body with a low body fat percentage (%BF) can help them achieve a higher level of performance. This is particularly the case in gravitational sports in which a high body mass hinders performance, in aesthetic sports in which there is a perceived ideal shape, and in weight class sports in which competition is organized into categories of body mass (20). However, some athletes put themselves at risk of health problems through extreme dieting, disordered eating, and fluid restriction in an effort to achieve a particular weight or …

Athletes’ Perceptions Of Athletic Trainers Quality Of Care, Chadley Foster May 2015

Athletes’ Perceptions Of Athletic Trainers Quality Of Care, Chadley Foster

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceived satisfaction of care from certified and licensed athletic trainers (ATC) and satisfaction of care between full time and graduate student ATCs at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (n=61). Studies identify satisfaction as a method to measure quality of care and its influence on many aspects of athletes’ success including health outcomes. This is the first study that evaluated multiple aspects of care including type and length of sport participation, academic class status, number of ATCs seen, primary ATC (graduate or full time), number of interactions with primary ATC, injury, …

The Reliability And Validity Of Physiotherapist Visual Rating Of Dynamic Pelvis And Knee Alignment In Young Athletes, C. Whatman, Patricia Hume, Wayne Hing Mar 2015

The Reliability And Validity Of Physiotherapist Visual Rating Of Dynamic Pelvis And Knee Alignment In Young Athletes, C. Whatman, Patricia Hume, Wayne Hing

Wayne Hing

Purpose: To investigate visual rating of pelvis and knee position in young athletes during lower extremity functional tests. Methods: Pelvis and knee alignment, in 23 athletes, was visually rated by 66 physiotherapists. Peak two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) kinematics were also quantified. Ratings were compared to consensus visual ratings of an expert panel. The consensus ratings were also compared to peak kinematics. Reliability was determined using percentage agreement (PA) and the first order agreement coefficient (AC1). Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and differences in kinematics between groups based on the expert visual ratings were calculated to assess rating validity. …

Preventing And Recognizing Anorexia Athletics - For Coaches And Athletes, William Manning Jan 2015

Preventing And Recognizing Anorexia Athletics - For Coaches And Athletes, William Manning

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

High school athletes are uniquely vulnerable to developing disordered eating. Athletes in general have a higher incidence of eating disorders than does the general population and over 90% of new eating disorders are diagnosed in individuals under 25 years of age. Even in sub-clinical eating disorders, the long-term health consequences can be dire. High school coaches and athletes are aware of eating disorders as a concept but do not regularly receive education of anorexia athletica, its signs and symptoms, and how to intervene in suspected cases. This project created a 10 min YouTube video that high school coaches and athletes …

An Athletic Approach To Studying Perception-Action Integration: Does Sport-Specific Training, And The Impact Of Injury, Influence How Individuals Visually Guide Navigation?, Carmen Baker, Jennifer Campos Ph.D, Michael E. Cinelli Ph.D. Jan 2015

An Athletic Approach To Studying Perception-Action Integration: Does Sport-Specific Training, And The Impact Of Injury, Influence How Individuals Visually Guide Navigation?, Carmen Baker, Jennifer Campos Ph.D, Michael E. Cinelli Ph.D.

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The objective of this thesis was to investigate perception-action integration capabilities of individuals during a choice navigation task. This task assessed navigation strategies in open space while individuals avoided colliding with two vertical obstacles that created a body-scaled, horizontal gap, at three varying obstacle distances from the starting location (3m, 5m, 7m). The two studies completed in this thesis employed the same paradigm to assess the hypothesized group differences. Gaze behaviours and kinematics of navigation strategies were compared between: 1) athletes specifically trained in navigating in open space versus non-athletes; and 2) athletes with post-concussion syndrome (PCS) versus non-concussed, specifically …
