Quality And Safety Education In Newly Hired Rns And Rns In Staff Leadership Roles, Dennis Alan Bertch
Quality And Safety Education In Newly Hired Rns And Rns In Staff Leadership Roles, Dennis Alan Bertch
Doctoral Dissertations
The intent of this project was to examine the potential knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) gap of practicing bedside registered nurse (RN) care providers regarding the quality and safety education for nurses (QSEN) core competencies. Based on this perceived gap two key questions were explored: (a) do newly hired RNs and RNs in staff leadership roles demonstrate an understanding of the KSAs of the QSEN core competencies?; and (b) was there a difference in the understanding of the KSAs of the QSEN core competencies related to RN educational preparation, years of RN experience, and/or previous quality improvement training within and …

Evaluating The Impact Of Two Different Methods Of Diabetes Self-Management Education On Knowledge, Attitude, And Behaviours Of Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Laura B. Briden
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study compared the effectiveness of diabetes self-management education (DSME) methods by examining changes in knowledge, attitude, and behaviour (KAB) after receiving education. Participants from a convenience sample were randomized into two groups, one receiving education through conversation maps and the other through traditional group education. Participants’ knowledge and attitude changes were measured by using a repeated measures pre-test/post-test design and changes in Hb A1c were observed. Focus groups were conducted after education was received to obtain perceptions and self-reported behaviour changes. Significant knowledge and attitude score changes were observed in the conversation map group after education. When comparing the …

Nurse's Beliefs And Knowledge About Medications Are Associated With Their Difficulties Using Patient Treatment Adherence Strategies, Mitchell Byrne, Frank Deane, Tim Coombs
Mitchell K Byrne
Background: The attitudes and beliefs of patients toward their treatment have been found to be an important factor in treatment outcome, particularly as it relates to treatment adherence. There are also suggestions that knowledge, attitudes and beliefs held by nurses about treatments may also be important influences on treatment outcome but there has been little research relating these to specific clinical behaviour. Aims: This study explored the knowledge and beliefs of nurses toward neuroleptic medications in the treatment of severe mental ill health with the view to identifying specific nurse training needs. Method: A convenience sample of 64 nurses was …

Innovativeness In Nursing: A Phenomenological And Constructivist Study, Maria Joseph
Innovativeness In Nursing: A Phenomenological And Constructivist Study, Maria Joseph
Maria (Lindell) Joseph
Hospital administration and the medical field have maintained the status quo of nursing practice, in which nurses have adopted bureaucratic structures where conformity and regimentation are maintained to ensure large-scale efficiency. The lack of control to act on nursing knowledge and expert judgment is linked to work conditions of oppression, lack of autonomy, dissatisfaction, concomitant patient mortality, and morbidity. A climate of innovativeness is one strategy to reverse the negative impact caused by hospital administration and the medical field. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the behavioral characteristics of lived experiences and knowledge of innovativeness among nurses …

Background: Specific antidotes (eg, naloxone, flumazenil, cyproheptadine and benzodiazepines) are available for the management of certain recreational drug-induced toxicities. Some controversies surround the use of some of these antidotes, especially flumazenil in benzodiazepine toxicity. There are no previously published data on doctors’ knowledge of the use of these specific antidotes. Methods: A questionnaire survey was designed to determine internal/emergency medicine doctors’ knowledge of the appropriate use of antidotes in the management of clinical scenarios of acutely poisoned patients. For nine simulated clinical scenarios of acute toxicity from recreational drugs (benzodiazepines, cocaine, N-methyl-L-(3, 4-methylene-dioxyphenyl)-2-aminopropane (MDMA)-induced serotonin toxicity and opioids), they were …

Evidence Based Practice Implementation: Perceptions And Expectations Of Master Of Social Work Students, Mholi Kent Vimba
Doctoral Dissertations
Abstract
Efforts to develop sustainable Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) implementation strategies in work settings have been generally unsuccessful. Scholars have focused on perceptions of workers already in work settings to identify implementation barriers and facilitators. None have focused on perceptions of social workers in training. This nationwide non-probability correlational study assessed Master of Social Work (MSW) students’ perceptions of EBP using a self-administered online survey. A total of 212 (57%) completed this survey with 164 (43%) timed out.
Perceptions were assessed using three sets of questions corresponding to the independent variables: EBP knowledge, attitude toward EBP and EBP self-efficacy. A …

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is an inherited cancer syndrome that is associated with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Carriers of BRCA mutations, both men and women, are at an increased risk for developing certain cancers. Carriers are most notably at an increased risk to develop breast and ovarian cancers; however an increased risk for prostate cancer, melanoma, and pancreatic cancers has also been associated with these mutations. In 2009 the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) released a practice bulletin stating that evaluating a patient’s risk for HBOC should be a routine part of obstetric …

The hollow-face illusion, in which a mask appears as a convex face, is a powerful example of binocular depth inversion occurring with a real object under a wide range of viewing conditions. Explanations of the illusion are reviewed and six experiments reported. In experiment 1 the detrimental effect of figural inversion, evidence for the importance of familiarity, was found for other oriented objects. The inversion effect held for masks lit from the side (experiment 2). The illusion was stronger for a mask rotated by 90° lit from its forehead than from its chin, suggesting that familiar patterns of shading enhance …

Rural Speech-Language Pathologists' Perceptions And Knowledge Of Emergent Literacy Instructional Practices: A Mixed Methods Study, Kellie C. Ellis
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
The acquisition of emergent literacy skills has become a prominent focus of early childhood education programs in recent years as research has demonstrated the significance of emergent literacy ability in the process of learning to read. The effectiveness of use of varied instructional techniques targeting the emergent literacy domains of phonological awareness, written language awareness, emergent writing, and oral language is well described in the literature. Consequently, educational service providers like speech-language pathologists are being called upon to assume roles in emergent literacy service provision. However, research has not fully explored the perceptions and knowledge speech-language pathologists possess of emergent …
