In the United States nearly 1 million annual new and recurrent myocardial infarctions (MI) occur with 10% of patients hospitalized with MI having unrecognized ischemic symptoms. Inexperienced nurses are expected to accurately interpret cardiac symptom cues, possibly without ever having experienced care of patients with MI, yet have been shown to be less able to classify symptom cues and reach accurate conclusions than experienced nurses. The purpose of this study was to test an educational intervention using theories of pattern recognition to develop CT in MI and improve nursing students’ clinical decision-making and clinical judgment using high fidelity patient simulation. …

Multidisciplinary collaboration provides opportunities for growth in any simulation program. Simulation coordinators pursuing excellence may find unlikely partners among health care and non–health care professionals. Non-nursing collaborations can offer students, faculty, and simulation coordinators fresh views about simulation in an interdisciplinary climate. Examples of cooperative work with instructors and researchers in radiology, sports medicine, and criminal justice studies are described. Sports medicine students participated in scenarios involving a school-aged child with a spontaneous pneumothorax, a coach who was having a stroke, a pregnant yoga instructor experiencing an asthma attack, and a football player who had been momentarily unconscious after a …

Teamwork training constitutes one of the core approaches for moving healthcare systems toward increased levels of quality and safety, and simulation provides a powerful method of delivering this training, especially for face-paced and dynamic specialty areas such as Emergency Medicine. Team performance measurement and evaluation plays an integral role in ensuring that simulation-based training for teams (SBTT) is systematic and effective. However, this component of SBTT systems is overlooked frequently. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is sweeping the nation as a legitimate and exciting new resource for nursing educators. As with most new technologies, HFS is not without its difficulties. It can be a costly program to run and may also cause anxiety among the faculty required for implementation. There is a simple solution to help increase the ease of its implementation: using student workers. This article discusses how using students to help run the simulations can not only reduce overall cost and anxiety associated with this new technology but also increase learning among those participating in HFS.

The overall goal of this project was to develop and apply important computerized aids for the design and implementation of Variable Resolution X-ray (VRX) CT scanners developed at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. VRX scanners take advantage of the “projective compression” principle that allows the same device to image objects of very different sizes with the same level of detail by adjusting the field of view and the reconstruction resolution.

Description And Validation Of A Dynamical Systems Model Of Presynaptic Serotonin Function: Genetic Variation, Brain Activation And Impulsivity, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Parthasarathi Nag

Despite more than a decade of empirical work on the role of genetic polymorphisms in the serotonin system on behavior, the details across levels of analysis are not well understood. We describe a mathematical model of the genetic control of presynaptic serotonergic function that is based on control theory, implemented using systems of differential equations, and focused on better characterizing pathways from genes to behavior. We present the results of model validation tests that include the comparison of simulation outcomes with empirical data on genetic effects on brain response to affective stimuli and on impulsivity. The ACGME requires that all residents are competent in performing basic invasive clinical procedures. Although simulation models have been used in other programs to teach these skills to interns with the intent to provide training and skills attainment before learning and performing on real patients, a large scale, mandatory simulation training, in which every incoming intern must satisfactorily complete training in a simulation center, prior to starting their intern year, has yet to be described. We describe such a curricular intervention produced in our Simulation Center.

Simulation has become a common teaching method for healthcare providers, including nursing students. Until recently, the focus of simulation for nursing students has been on clinical skills. This study used a compilation survey to determine if knowledge and attitude scores improved in the bachelor degree nursing student after exposure to a simulation-based teamwork and communication training. Participants were 51 students from the senior leadership course of a bachelor’s degree in nursing program at a university in New Jersey. Control participants received normal clinical rotations with faculty led discussions, and intervention participants received a 4-hour simulation, focused on teamwork and communication. …

Proficiency in the clinical skill of effective hand washing is integral to high quality health care. Studies at our hospital revealed that in 2008, of 1215 direct, anonymous, observations of residents and attendings, only 53.3% washed their hands correctly during clinical activities. Medical students in fiscal year 2009 (July 1, 2008-June 30 2009) had a 52% compliance rate from 109 observations. This data prompted our hospital to work with the faculty of the University Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (UCSSC) to develop a module on the indications and technique of effective handwashing.
