Percutaneous needle biopsy has been used successfully in many organ systems with excellent results and few complications. In this study, we sought to evaluate percutaneous transthoracic biopsy results using a coaxial system. Materials and methods: The records of 302 patients (mean age, 63.1 years) who underwent percutaneous CT-guided coaxial cutting needle lung and mediastinal biopsy were retrospectively evaluated. Number, diameter, location of the lesions, calcification, and emphysema on lung parenchyma were noted. The number of specimens obtained, complications after the procedure, and treatment of complications were recorded. Results: From lesions identified in 270 patients on thoracic CT, a mean of …

To investigate the relationship between aluminum and spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) development. Materials and methods: A patient group and a control group were formed with 100 individuals in each. The serum aluminum levels of the groups were determined and statistically compared. Results: The mean serum aluminum levels were 5.6 ± 2.4 \mug/L (1.6-11.9) and 23.2 ± 15.4 \mug/L (2-81) in the control and SP groups, respectively (P < 0.001). The specificity and sensitivity of the measurement of aluminum level were 74.4% and 86.4% in the SP group. The risk of SP development was found to be 18 times higher in individuals with high serum levels of aluminum compared to that in individuals with low serum levels of aluminum. Conclusion: A high level of aluminum is a risk factor for the development of SP.

There is no report investigating the human leukocyte antigen system (HLA) class I alleles and haplotypes in the patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) without any familial history in the literature. We investigated the association of these alleles and haplotypes, and the occurrence of the PSP in Turkish patients. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 20 patients diagnosed as PSP (without any familial history), and 20 healthy volunteers as control group. All the participants were Turkish male nonsmokers. Their genomic DNAs were extracted from venous samples, and the HLA class I alleles and haplotypes were analysed. Results: The …
