Domoic acid (DA) is a potent toxin produced by bloom-forming phytoplankton in the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, which is responsible for causing amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans. ASP symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and in more severe cases confusion, loss of memory, disorientation, and even coma or death. This paper describes the development and validation of a rapid, sensitive, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test kit for detecting DA using a monoclonal antibody. The assay gives equivalent results to those obtained using standard high performance liquid chromatography, fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl high performance liquid chromatography, or liquid chromatography—mass spectrometry methods. It has a linear range …

Aim: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis that affects both animals and man. VL is seen sporadically in the Aegean, Mediterranean, Black Sea and central Anatolian regions of Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate serological tests for the diagnosis of VL. Materials and Methods: The performance of two agglutination tests based on freeze-dried whole promastigote Leishmania antigen, i.e. Fast Agglutination Screening Test (FAST) and Direct Agglutination Test (DAT), an Indirect Immunofluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT), and an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) using soluble antigen were compared to parasitological diagnosis in the serum specimens of 59 patients with the …

Presence of the chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) infection in chicken flocks in some provinces of Turkey was investigated by ELISA and PCR in this study. From 38 flocks (16 commercial layer, 10 commercial broilers, 4 breeder layers and 8 breeder broilers), 922 serum samples were tested for CIAV-specific antibodies using a commercially available competitive ELISA. CIAV antibodies were positive in 609 (66.0%) sera from 34 flocks (89.5%). A total of 95 thymus samples from 25 flocks, 57 samples from 15 commercial layers, and 38 samples from 10 commercial broiler flocks were tested by PCR. In 53 (55.8%) thymus samples …
