An experiment was conducted to investigate the haematological and cholesterol profiles and antibody titer responses to both Newcastle disease (ND) and Infectious bronchitis (IB) vaccines in broiler chickens after drinking water supplemented with either a commercial probiotic (an Active Elements®; AE) containing Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, an antibiotic Chlortetracycline (CTC), or the probiotic plus the antibiotic. Four hundred one-day-old male Cobb broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 4 treatment groups designated as follow: a non-treated control (T1), a 0.05% CTC (T2), a 1:500 AE (T3), and a combination of 0.05% CTC and 1:500 AE (T4), respectively. INTRODUCTION: Appendicitis is the most common emergency condition in children. Historically, a 3-drug regimen consisting of ampicillin, gentamicin, and clindamycin (AGC) has been used postoperatively for perforated appendicitis. A retrospective review at our institution has found single day dosing of ceftriaxone and metronidazole (CM) to be a more simple and cost-effective antibiotic strategy. Therefore, we performed a prospective, randomized trial to compare efficacy and cost-effectiveness of these 2 regimens.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing a commercially available probiotic (an Active Elements®; AE) containing Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, an antibiotic; Chlortetracycline (CTC), and the probiotic plus antibiotic, via the drinking water on broiler production performance, mortality rate and the antibiotic residue in meat. In some bacteria Lys-tRNALys is used both in translation and for the specific addition of Lys to phosphatidylglycerol in the cytoplasmic membrane. This reaction is catalyzed by the membrane protein MprF, and the lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol formed contributes to the resistance of these bacteria to various cationic antibacterial molecules. Obtaining proteins and reconstituting an in vitro system mimicking membrane conditions is a major challenge to studying the function of membrane proteins, especially when labile substrates such as Lys-tRNALys are required. P. aeruginosa forms biofilms in the lungs of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF); however, there have been no effective model systems for studying biofilm formation in the CF lung. We have developed a tissue culture system for growth of P. aeruginosa biofilms on CF-derived human airway cells that promotes the formation of highly antibiotic-resistant microcolonies, which produce an extracellular polysaccharide matrix and require the known abiotic biofilm formation genes flgK and pilB. Treatment of P. aeruginosa biofilms with tobramycin reduced the virulence of the biofilms both by reducing bacterial numbers and by altering virulence gene expression. Aims: Acinetobacter species usually affect hospitalized patients and are involved in many infections associated with a high mortality rate. Management of infections caused by these strains is very difficult, as the strains often display multiple drug resistance, including carbapenem resistance. Tigecycline is the most recently developed semi-synthetic broad spectrum glycylcycline antibiotic. The present study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from the hospitalized patients to tigecycline. Materials and Methods: Acinetobacter isolates were collected from hospitalized patients with documented nosocomial infections between June 2005 and October 2006.
